Again the glass is clear. The glass has no color. It only reflects the color of the sky.
Actually it does has a slight blue tint on the glass barely noticeable.

Ah.....I think I can decipher the apprehension concerning the ultimate size of the "spantenna".
IIRC, this will end up 414' above the roof of the building (1,787-1,373). That's pretty damn big for a mast of this kind and construction material.
That's almost 1/4 the tower's height to roof. I think another explanation for the interesting proportions is that Durst & Co. just might be trying to compromise with the fact that what was originally planned for the spire is no longer the case: Therefore, we're witnessing an experiment in improvisation that IMO just might turn out better that many people right now are commenting on.
Of course, as is normal on this board after some years of lurking and (more recently) commenting, to me there seems to be this trend to pee on the finished product *before* the finished product exists. I truly believe that these final pieces of the spire, *especially the beacon*, will bring many more opinions over to the positive side.
Also, don't forget that the beacon itself is metallic and as such will relfect sunlight.

Do you know if they added another piece of spire in the last 24 hours.. Nyguys photo (up close) shows 2 twin looking pieces at the very top,314 and 315 perhaps,,,(just like the diagrams) before the long thin piece attached to the pinnacle.(which we all know is already put together and waiting for erection. I coulda swore yesterday this time there were only 1 of those up there. Also you say the building has no tint, I thought that 4WTC was the totally natural, and 1WTC had a hint of blue? And what would you say the color of the base is, is that natural too, sure seems a tint of green to me.
Most importantly was the spire question, seems like they added another piece today, if so that leaves only the double left, Correct, or is their still 1 more laying on platform?

It's not even completed and it looks way to tall.
Well remember the communication platform ring is still undone once completed it should give 1 wtc mast more symmetry and not look so disproportion, and also by showing less of 1wtc mast.

This spire will look great when it's done. The beacon will be fantastic! We've had a beacon on one of our buildings since the 60s and on some night, because of weather, smog, etc. it's just magical. It's going to be just awesome over NYC - I can't wait to go check it out once it's all done.

1WTC is not alone in this regard, Taipei 101 has a substantial portion of its height do to the spire as well as Burj Dubai. There in NYC the Empire State Building's total antenna and spire height go up to 1,454 feet from the highest occupied floor at 1,050 feet and yes I'm aware of the little platform at 1,225 feet. ;) Also the Bank of America Tower's spire reaches 1,200 feet despite the roof being 953.5 feet. Yup, I'd say it's the norm today, then again NYC is a unique city that incorporates a defining point to a lot of its buildings as the icing on the cake. Not that it's a bad thing. :) Just my two cents.

Wow, it's pretty startling to see the New Jersey views of 1 WTC now that they finally have the vertical gap all cladded up and being it's the side where glass now reaches to the roof. SOOOOO WEIRD! But a good weird :D I hope at least the south portion (facing the memorial) is mostly cladded to the roof by the time I get there. The pictures looking straight up at 1 WTC will be pretty spectacular!

Wow, I think that shot really shows how distinct the spire/mast/antenna is on this building. Maybe all the haters will quiet down a bit now as we're closing in on the top. It's not the cranes we're seeing, it's the building. Honestly, I love the way it's turning out, and I'm not so sure that the covering would have made it that much better.

Maybe because renders are not blueprints. No real mystery here.

It needs more "body". Or to be built the way it was intended.

Well, you guys can hate all you want. Once the rings are completed, I think it migt give a nice transition from sleek modern exterior, to a brutal industrial structure. I think the contrast might be kind of cool. So, haters gonna hate, but we all have our own opinions, and I think it's starting to grow on me. I still think judgement should be reserved until final product.

Honestly I'm not sure why people are so eager to have all the little platforms removed: they add bulk and interest. From a distance, they make the spire look almost Baroque in shape.

^This...to bum a piece of Internet shorthand.
I should *hope* the platforms are staying there; and the Baroque analogy is quite interesting.
I appreciate the spire from closer up; but that's me. I'm really starting to grow awed by the sheer size of it, mostly for the reason given in the sentence to the immediate left of this one.

Now, that's an observation I never even considered till now.
If you think about it, that's actually what New York City's all about: cleaving tenaciously to its gritty, almost-kinda-steampunk past, while not being afraid to venture into hi-tech modernity and beyond.
Just thunking about it---speaking for myself, of course----makes the proposed radome covering and resultant telecom splif look downright farcical.

So Spire Fact= 1 single, 1 double remain.../// Now for a somewhat OT ?.. I was told as a kid probably 10 or so, (driving to Detroit from Canada) Looking at the Det Ren Cen (gm Headquarters now) anyway the tallest building in Detroit. 755ft nothing quite tall by these standards, but with no obstacles you could see that bldg from 25 miles away. I was told by my uncle that every 30 feet added to a skyscraper adds 3 miles of distance view! Anybody know this to be somewhat true? I just remember that to this day, so if the spire is recognizable It should be seen some 70 miles away of flat land.

Very OT but I know you can see the Ren Cen and all of downtown Detroit from 27 miles overland from Silverbell Road in Orion Township (which is impressive when you consider how flat Michigan is) . As far as 1WTC goes, what is the farthest someone has seen it from overland?

I should have been more clear. I do believe the spire will be lit, but I was more referring to the beacon itself being lit. It will be visible from so far away it will be a major highlight for the city. Also the base being lit will be dazzling for those up close.

I think you have a point there...and we will get used to it very quickly, unfortunately.
Yeah, getting used to something and liking it are two completely different things. I can tell you there are many things I'm used to seeing that don't make me dislike them any less.
And those are for things that don't have anywhere near the significance of this tower.
But something else I have noticed though, when reading some of the commentary here about the visibility of the mast from a distance. The antenna on top of the ESB spire is visible,
so I always assumed it would be, but when looking at this tower from a distance, it never really caught my attention. I had to confirm it. Because it's so similar to the original Twins
in both location and appearance, my eyes are trained to see it that way, meaning the antenna was of no significance to the towers themselves, so I never really "saw" it when looking at them.
But hey, at night we will have a beacon on top. That will be something different.

That affect will only be created if the glass pieces are going to be that opaque. From what I've seen so far there is no indication that's going to be the case. But we shall see, there might still be a glimmer of hope.

Correct - there will be a beacon that slowly rotates two horizontal beams, much like a lighthouse. On foggy nights, it will look incredible!
Ah right thanks for the information, but on that note. Someone on here NEEDS to create a render of what this would look like !

It will be. They are only closed right now while construction goes on around them...the rendering is correct.

This is what confused me about the base. How are the fins installed? Do they extend out of the facade already installed?

The fins, aluminum backing and LED's are all part of single units, installed much like windows. The fins (2 to a unit) are hinged in the center, and will open outwards like a V.
While I'm not such a fan of them in their current flat state, I think the opened fins will add verticality to the base, overpowering the horizontal striping beneath them and making the tower appear taller.

I agree. It will be a very unique aspect to the building and almost make it feel like she's a living, breathing thing. Any idea what conditions will call for the fins to open/close? Will they constantly be adjusting?

The Chinese could make it last resistant — specifically when it was exploded it didn't break up like tempered glass it fissured into deadly shards. So after spending $10 million on the prismatic glass they had to settle for the cheaper. Less inspired but safer fin design which only works with a squared off foundation.

Read more carefully. Apparently, they plan to hoist the conjoined spire sections to the top Monday and be installed at a later date.
"The final section, comprising the 17th and 18th pieces, will bring the building to its iconic height of 1776. Once the pieces are installed, at a later date, the spire will make One WTC the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere."
