Are the iron workers able to continue work when they're in the clouds like that? It must be like working in dense fog...I'd hate to have thousand-pound iron beams swinging around while trying to keep my balance up there. Yikes. :omg:

When looking at the Trade Center, the lower triangular angled portions of the glass facade which come to a sharp point always trick my mind into believing this is where the tower starts, be it near or far. Since the view of the base is obscured by the buildings around it, my mind finishes these angles and almost diminishes the height when focusing solely on the tower...

I'm wondering if this was done intentionally or if it'll go away after the lower portion gets its special cladding? Hopefully I've articulated this properly, or maybe I'm just crazy.

I was wondering the same thing, when the top of this tower gets loss in the fog/clouds etc, do they stop working like when it rains or snows?

i'd say it will be diminished when the lower portion gets it's cladding but don't think it was done intentionally for that reason. i believe it's supposed to give the illusion that there are two towers there in a tribute to the twins.......did i articulate this correctly?

The tower is obscured by fog because it's viewed from a distance. When you are in the middle of that fog, you can see perfectly clearly. My guess is the ironworkers only need maybe 10-20 meters of visibility to work in reasonable safety, and that picture was taken from at least a half-km away. I'm guessing the limit here is not set by the ironworkers but by the crane operators, who need to be able to see for a much longer distance.

I'm thinking that effect will wane when the tower reaches its full height and the spire is in place.

I wish they would have made it so the tips of the triangle tapers right above the base were lit up to make the look at night more complete/uniform.

There is a fast moving thunderstorm coming to New York right now. It would be here in 30 minutes so I guess they would be stopping work on the building soon since there is going to be a lot of wind up there.

No, the ironworkers can't work when it's too foggy up top. There are times when it's raining up on top but nothing on the ground...then they call it an early day unless they have work inside to do.

There is plenty to do inside too. Especially on the lower floors where the skin and clad siding, plus the facade is already put up.

My pictures of One World Trade Center today from Brooklyn Bridge Park. Wind and poor camera quality makes these photos not so great. Hard to believe but in some of the pictures there are two couples marrying in the park on such a windy day like today. One married by the waterfront while the other was at another part of the park. There was also a baby shower as well.

I think the Beekman has taken the honor of the dominant one when looking from ground level from brooklyn or the east. Even when all the WTC towers are completed they will not look very dominant, and 1. have the misfortune of being on the west side, and have to look shorter than they really are and 2. have the misfortune {(to us fortune)} of the Beekman being built, which not only takes the spotlight away from the complex from Brooklyn, but also makes them look short in the process as it is placed on the east side of LM making it look taller.

Yeah, it's a pity Silverstein et al didn't have the balls to hire Frank Gehry to design the WTC site. Can you imagine how awesome that would have been? But at least NY has a terrific Gehry tower.

Hello. So when will they start putting the marble in the Lobby? What's up with the cladding of the base? What floor are we on ? And When will tower four encounter the setback?. I know it's alot, but alot of the info i've been reading as been off.

Roadcruiser1
Oct 16, 2011, 3:40 PM
They probably would put the marble in near the very end as finishing touches. The tarp that is covering the base is basically for base work, Tower One is on floor 86, and we still don't know when the setback would begin on Tower 4.

Edited my picture to show how dominating One World Trade Center might become from Brooklyn Bridge Park.

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6230/6248518268_a76b1fa4f1_b.jpg

It'll have quite the presence on the horizon. Let's hope 2 and 3 WTCs will join it soon.

That figure reminds me of the placeholders used for the original renderings of possible site layouts for a WTC rebuilt... there was always a stick labeled "skyline element." I guess we got our skyline element AND a truly tall building, after all.

I wonder how similar the lobby of 1wtc will be to the old twin towers. I remember they had lots of white marble. Also, the 64th floor skylobby..will it have the same elevator system of taking an express from the ground floor to the 64th then local elevators from 64 to top?

Yep, that's a skylobby... Tenants will take G bank to ride up to the 64th and then take H(64-73) or I(76-90) bank. H bank is located at the top of C & D banks; I bank is located at the top of the 63rd's MER.

I heard from a few sources that the office floors will actually go until 90 and that the broadcast floors may have been moved or changed buildings.

Could be wrong though.

Yep, you're right.
Floor 89th will have 32,799 S.F. of office rentable space while
Floor 90th will have 31, 586 S.F.
These floors will be very expensive compared to the ones below, due to higher ceilings and location.

Sweet! Maybe the observation deck/potential restaurant will be a few floors higher then? Possibly 1300 ft?

I think the Beekman has taken the honor of the dominant one when looking from ground level from brooklyn or the east. Even when all the WTC towers are completed they will not look very dominant, and 1. have the misfortune of being on the west side, and have to look shorter than they really are and 2. have the misfortune {(to us fortune)} of the Beekman being built, which not only takes the spotlight away from the complex from Brooklyn, but also makes them look short in the process as it is placed on the east side of LM making it look taller.

i get what you are saying but to me,if that's the price for having the Beekman i'm fine with it, the more (tall buildings) the merrier;)

No they'll stay because floors 103-105 are mechanical

100th floor - 1240 feet
101st - 1254
102nd - 1266

(add 5 feet if the roof is actually 1373) Or if you measure from vessey street

so the 102nd floor deck would be 1271

NewYorker2009

I believe they moved the Observation Deck to floors 100 and 101 leaving 102 empty. Scrapping the proposed restaurant left those two floors empty so the Port Authority moved the observation deck to floors 100 and 101. It just seems the Observation Deck keeps getting moved lower and lower than the original anticipated height of 1,362 feet. Well it's not so bad. It's not like they can move it down any further because those floors right below it are Mechanical. If anything, they may decide to just add 102 as another observation level. I do agree the roof should have been higher to actually put a higher observation deck than we are getting but hopefully it won't be so bad. Things can always change later on as they have already so we'll wait and see what happens.

Not really. The idea is to protect One World Trade Center from any future car bombing attacks though I do find it rather extreme. I always thought that explosive proof glass which does exist should have had been used for the base.

I was at the World Trade Center development this past weekend, and I actually have a couple of questions about the base. I see that they have concrete up for most of the base except for where the main doors are going to be. I gess considering the renderings above, there are going to be no windows at all here? I thought they changed that idea and were going to go with glass prisms...? If they're just going to leave it with nothing but the concrete, that's really going to look cheap and rather uninviting.

Also, I saw that some of the netting was removed from part of the base and some metal fixtures were added. Are they going to start cladding below the 16th floor? I have several pics which I will post soon!

When did they scrap Windows on the World? What the hell for?

Oh they will definitely not leave just bare concrete at the base, they'll figure something out to put there...All the precautions notwithstanding, I'd say the chances of someone pulling 93 like bombing at the base of the tower are almost zero because no building in the world wil be more watched..There will be a lot of redundant security down there, much of which won't be visible to everyday citizens..about the potential new Windows on the World restuarant at the top, I think they will definitely put one up there sometime, when economic conditions permit...because it would make great economic sense and because many would want to visit it because 1wtc is in so many ways an homage and similar to the old north tower. I'd say by 2015 or so after the tower has been open awhile, there will be a restaurant added at the top...after all the space is there

The PA thinking a restaurant would be a money-loser seems really flawed to me. I think so many people will want to visit the tower, that there would be that nostalgic demand to experience what windows on the world was like. Remember, in it's last full yr of operation (2000) windows was the most profitable restaurant in the country I believe.

It's not PA fault, if there's no company interested on operating and managing a restaurant, then you've gotta do something with that valuable empty space. The Observation Deck will eventualy become a magned of tourists, so it wouldn't surprise me if the PA decides to use that floor as an extra floor for that service.
