What bugs me about these documentaries is not politics, but the fact that they are coming out before the job is actually finished. It seems to me that a documentary show about a construction job ought to conclude with the completion of the building. But they seem to be jumping the gun with these. Rise of Freedom is coming out now but T1 will not be open for occupancy for another year at least. And the Discovery Channel one, The Rising, isn't that also coming out before anything will actually be completed?

Of course, it might be 2016 (optimistically) before all six major projects now underway are finished, and one wouldn't want to wait that long to see a documentary about the site. (Heck, it could be a lot longer than that if they waited for tower 5 and the Performing Arts Center.) But one would think they could at least wait for T1 and T4 to be completed before coming out with these self congratulatory shows. It just seems unseemly to me. Like having your graduation party when you are still a sophomore or something.

:previous: It's from a NEWS source; not a documentary source. Hence they're just snippets, ~5 minutes each, just updates.

"self congratulatory shows." < I don't get this at all. I don't see any congratulations in it at all. It's refreshing to see lessons learned like improved structural, fire prevention, and emergency plans incorporated when so lessons are lost on making improvements. Even if it was congratulatory (disagreements aside) from all the hard work the people down there have put into the site's reconstruction I'd say it was definitely warranted.

I wish all news sources would provide more updates. A lot of people want to stay in the loop. For instance what are these temporary platforms coming out of the NW corner for? Does the side crane lift and place materials on these to transfer to the top cranes don't have to pull materials all the way up possibly risking damage to the sides?

Wow! It looks HUGE in this picture! I'm very impressed in the work that is being done right now. The WTC is currently soaring above all of the buildings right now in Lower Manhattan.
it looks literally embedded with high-rises.... and there's a good portion left. Side note: 4WTC becomes gradually visible as well.

I know, but I'd like to know, the east and west are the same, but i do not know the numbers for any of them. And i would still like to know the heigh of the communications ring.

The side crane is being used by the concrete contractor to bring up rebar and stuff for the core, which is always about 6-10 floors below the top of the steel.

as in, the whole group of three, where does the bottom one start and what's underneath it? also, how wide is the ring in diameter?

Let me get back to you on that. I've got most of my model stuff zipped (the Manhattan model is 300MB uncompressed and I maintain several back-ups) and I don't have that particular correspondence from Zen saved here. If I forget, PM me in like a week.

This shot is very special. It's like the ramp seems to go into the tower, and the tower seems to blend into the sky, so it's like there's this smooth transition from the mundane ground into the vast ether. I hope to see more shots from this location when the tower is complete.

I can't believe anyone at the NY/NJ Port Authority is so utterly Soul Dead they are not moving heaven and Earth to see the entire complex completed by the end next month, for Pete's Sake! Are those people on drugs or something?

Construction is probably the quickest and most forward moving process of the entire site except for the tenant situation. If you want to be upset at the PA about not finishing quick enough, you'd have to go talk to them back in 2002. :yuck:

I actually think they are wasting time and they could have it done quicker. I mean the ESB only took 2 years to build..

Allow me to add this:

If you read the Wikipedia article on the Original WTC (and I strongly suggest it) , you'll discover some most interesting facts and dates as to how long it actually took from planning to final topping out, plus the reasons why the project was placed on hiatus twice.

As annoying as the utter shit we've had to put up with with this project has been, it totally pales in comparison to back then. Believe me.

Yeah, I understand all that.

But the rebuilding of the WTC was about more than business interests and political gamesmanship. At least, it was supposed to be. The project was to demonstrate New York's and America's resilience to the world in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

Instead, the clowns of the PA have managed to make it a symbol of the enduring affects of the terrorist acts.

I don't really know if they see it that way. IMO, it seems to be a matter of expediting a bottom line...and at an expense of their choosing, as we've seen with the X-brace cut-out.
Symbolism means jack to people obsessed with quotas, deadlines and agendas.

Great pic! IMO it's been worth the wait. With the exception of WTC 3 being redone, all the new designs are much better than what they first wanted up. Or even some of the 5 finalist. IMO, it was much better to take the time to get it right. These buildings will be here for years once their built. So we should make everyone proud with what we have.

Is it just me or does 3 wtc just stick out as being totally awesome looking. I was a big fan of the original but it really goes well with 4 wtc now. To be honest it all looks so great. The quality of the glass from 1 to 4 wtc is just amazing. I think str as always had the best renderings, but honestly the real glass in pictures is so amazing. I can only guess at the moment how great it must look in person, being there.

I think that rendering makes the 'shoulders' on 3 wtc look a little wider than they actually are. But awesome view nonetheless. Another thing I like (probably going OT, my bad.) is that the spiral heights of the towers integrate the site better into Manhattan's skyline rather than having one stand-alone super tall.

Also the heights of 1, 2 and 3 (but not 4 for some reason) have been exaggerated by about 2 or 3 hundred feet.

*In architecture they are referred to as Spires... a spiral is a very different thing. Unless you are referring to how the heights of the 4 towers "spiral" higher and higher as they go from the lowest 4, then 3, 2 and then 1?

So how close is the top floor to being a regular octagon? Hasn't it already passed becuase the tower (above the concrete base) is over halfway and the floor that would be a regular octagon is the halfway point to the top so hasn't it happened already?

This has been disputed so many times in this thread, and was finalized after an attempt by me, which was corrected, to calculate it about 100 pages ago. The perfect octagon is floor 74.

Not according to anyone who has modeled this building, has plans or is a math whiz... They all said approximately two thirds of the way up the 72nd floor.

Just looking at the spacing of the corner columns on 72 and you see that above this it would be impossible to have perfectly equal sides.

i love how people called this a bland tower... how can you look at it right now, especially by virtue of the last few pics, and honestly say that this would be something not good enough for this site? the curtain wall is absolutely stunning, and the building will only become more and more beautiful as time goes by. so what if it has a fairly conservative design? so does the sears tower, as did the original twins. people need to get over the fact that more complex is always better. its not in many ways. in fact, in my opinion, a complicated design in this situation could very well have turned this entire effort into something tacky and overdone. also, whatever is lost in design is more than made up for in the absolutely breathtaking facade as we have witnessed more and more of. I don't what a complicated tower that is overdone and out of context; i want an icon of a city and an era.

Just like the original World Trade Center and the new World Trade Center there will always be critics that criticizes these things. Hey as the old saying goes "You can't please everyone, some people are bound to hate it", but hate as I say "All great works get criticized even at one point."

The twins were disliked or hated by alot of people in 72,73 when they were completed. Then over the next 28-29 years became liked or loved by alot of people. I wonder how many dislikers in the 70s felt that way do to the huge boxy size never seen before. Or if it was that the ESB had been there since 1933? Or something else? And back to today now. Both cranes should jump up in the next 24Hrs and new steel in the next day or so. Cranes then will extend from the 880' level to 1150' range.

Agreed. I felt like people didn't really acknowledge the Twin Towers that much before 9/11. It's like after 9/11, people finally realized what they had lost and how much they wanted it. I really hope these ignorant "environmental freaks" don't protest the lighting on top of the WTC. They were here at the Silver Towers where I live protesting about how the lighting gives off too much "light pollution" and that it is too bright... So ridiculous.

I personally think lights atop of buildings at night give the skyline a unique and amazing view.

I have not actually heard that.. Hmm.. I feel like the Time Warner Center is like the World Trade Center back then.. If the same thing happened to the Time Warner Center Towers that happened to the Twin Towers, we wouldn't look at them like any other building anymore.

"So .... and the floor that would be a regular octagon is the halfway point to the top so hasn't it happened already?

The octagon floor would be at the 1/2 way point if the square at the top of the tower was the same size as the square at the bottom of the tower (using the inflection point of the 20th floor as the bottom for this discussion). But as the edges of the top floor's square (the ceiling presumably) are 1/2 in length (1/4 the area) the octagon is closer to the top than the bottom as others have noted.

no,true, but they werent't 110 stories high either and never were the tallest buildings in the world. Also, i think the sight of them when you enter NY harbor was an iconic view for foreigners as well as them with the Statue of Liberty in one view

LOL it's the same thing with the Buddha Statues of Bamiyan. People didn't really care about it until it was blown up by the Taliban. With the completion of 1WTC and One57 in a few years . . .

1,000-foot buildings by spire
New York- 7
Hong Kong- 6

1,000-foot buildings by roof
New York- 3
Hong Kong- 4

I refuse to count Dubai. It's not a "real" city.

NYC is slowly reasserting itself as the world's top REAL city with regard to height. That's where we belong.

Tons more on the way, too. I love it!

Speaking of ignorant....

Having light in a city is a given. Wasting the resource and abusing that privilege is the issue. Before more armchair commentators speak up, just fully understand the issues and THEN form your opinion.

Fortunately, most City Planners, Architects and Developers ARE informed about these issues and are not as obtuse as some members on here. They deem it important enough to spend millions in Light Pollution Mitigation every year, including the new World Trade Center.

That's a shame, considering millions around the world are starving and the money could be spent saving them. I hope "they" are bounced out of office by the electorate.

people don't really factor in the construction cranes when they discuss height, which imo actually makes a difference as far as the general effect of visibility. If the tower were 1016 to the roof in 8 weeks, then it could seem to be around a hundred feet higher in many people's eyes.

NAS stainless steel to be used in New York Freedom Tower

July 12, 2011

North American Stainless Steel will be used in the cable wall located in the Lobby of One World Trade Center also known as the Freedom Tower in New York.

The architectural plans for the lobby, drawn by renowned architects Skidemore, Owings & Merrils call for the use of T316L premium grade stainless steel for the plates that will make up the cable wall.

Carlos on SSC has posted shots that show good detail of the 72nd-74th floors. There is a piece of steel that looks to be 40' or 3 floors up there to the 75th floor.

I know this is off topic, but how do you become a moderator? Does it involves always contributing to the threads or to just be a member for a period of time?
