That's the new Fiterman Hall. It used to have a thread here somewhere, but maybe it's been abandoned. In any event, it doesn't have much to rise (it's only going to be 13 or 14 stories and they're doing the 11th and 12th floors right now).

Someone over at SSC had their thinking cap on. A poster named Swiddle had a thought as to why the 20th floor has every other window installed.

It is his theory that it is to facilitate the lifting devices for the future installation of the base cladding. It makes sense:

There are no actual floors near the outer structure of the base from which workers or machines could safely install the panels. So in the future (sometime in early 2012 according to some posters on here) when the base cladding is installed, they will stage from the 20th floor and raise the panels from lifts protruding from the spaces in the cladding on the 20th floor. Then workers suspended on staging platforms (also supported from the openings on the 20th floor) could work in tandem with climbers on the steel, to install each prismatic panel.

Just a theory.

Ehh...I don't think so. Nearest I can tell, the prismatic glass is bolted with its back plate, which is in turn bolted to the beams that are already installed. As such, the base pieces could easily be installed in combined glass and backing units.

It really doesn't make any sense to delay finishing a floor for a whole year for something that could easily be worked out beforehand.

But how do you lift the panels into place? Surely not with the tower cranes 85 floors above? I don't think a scissor lift can reach 185 feet either. A mobile truck-mounted crane on the ground would be hopelessly in they way all the time and ungainly to move around the base.

A simple lifting hoist that rolls around on dollies, on an unfinished 20th floor, with it's head poking out one of these openings, would work fine. They send the cable down to the ground, attach a panel and winch it up to the level where the installers are working. Seems to be an elegant solution to me.

The base is to be left open to the elements for another year, so why not the 20th floor?

I said it was just a theory.

From some of the pictures posted above it can be seen that they are doing exactly that to suspend the scaffolding they are using now to install the brackets for the base cladding. At the pace they are working it will take them many months to finish (they have been working on it since the summer and have barely finished one side).

I think most Americans who aren't skyscraper geeks and who haven't visited the site don't realize that a building called the WTC is under construction and is already taller than anything in their city (OK, a huge generalization).

Anyway, I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge last night, in the snow, and it was great to see this tower rising on the other side of downtown. It was also the first time I've seen Beekman up close, despite having lived here for a month and having visited the city several times since it's been u/c. I'm not a huge Ghery fan. The Disney Hall in LA is cool, but I hate that thing in Seattle, and generally his buildings get less interesting the more I see them. But, Beekman is going to be my favorite of his buildings by far. It's distinctively Ghery, but at the same time a "normal" skyscraper in that its function doesn't seem to be compromised by its shape.

It is indeed a treat. More info and discussion on Beekman here...

Meanwhile, when this tower starts poking above the Downtown skyline next year (a matter of months really), people all over the City and surrounding areas will be just as amazed how far things have come along.

Yes, as a person who had no idea of the project, it was so interesting to go through the tread, and see the progress since the beginning to now. I had always hoped America would build something bigger and better than what was there, as both a tribute to American strength, and their ability to rise above the terrible crimes committed against all democratic nations, and our systems of belief.

This whole WTC rebuilding thing seems to be a big secret in most parts of the world that I have visited in the past 3 years. (Germany, Greece, Japan, Italy, U.A.E.) It is not much of a surprise that our neighbors to the north are ill informed.

I like how there are subtle references to the aesthetics of the twin towers in #1 and #7 (the placement of the towers as seen in the second picture, and the close-together vertical elements in their bases) in the context of a complex that will generally look very different from the original.

I love the glass, its reflective enough to not be totally clear. It's going look quite a bit different from 7WTC, you can tell that already looking at the reflectively and color between the two. I think the glass is going to be top notch having rich colors (the blues, the blacks, the whites on brighter days).

If you guys think this glass is going up fast wait until the summertime. The citygoers willbe sweating on the sidewalks and meanwhile the glass workers will be catching all the cool summer breeze without any of the beating sun that the steelworkers deal with at the top. I wouldn't be surprised if the workers are doing two entire floors a week by july/august, especially since they will be pumped for the anniversary by that time.

Someone who is able should take measure of the glass speed from now until topping out.

At some point they will have to slow down because they can't go faster than the fireproofing, who can't go faster than the floor concrete, who can't go faster than the core, etc......

BStyles
Dec 15, 2010, 9:08 PM
That's why the fireproofing started five floors faster than the glass. It only took about one week to fireproof one floor, plus there's a section of the N/W corner that remains without two levels of glass because of the crane track removal.

-Steel is up to floor 52
-Concrete is up to floor 42, so they say.
-Fireproofing is currently underway on floor 27, and glass is currently at 23. Looks like a four-floor lag, which looks right on most buildings under construction around the forum.

Technically the floors aren't warm until the building heat starts working for the first time. Windows don't mean a thing, plus there's no glass on the N/W corner. There's always the occasional space heater, though.:P

Sorry if this has already been discussed, but does anyone know why the bottom row of glass has spaces in between each panel? Also, how come there are angled pieces of metal in between the currently installed panels? Are those also behind the currently installed ones?
Its so the workers can easily piss off the building without going all the way to the portapottys below

Someone pointed out earlier that the spaces are for ease of installation of HVAC equipment.

edit: I stand corrected... apparently it's for ease of urination.

Apparently it was for perfect alignment of glass and not for ease for installation of HVAC equipment.:)

Someone who is able should take measure of the glass speed from now until topping out.

According to the Port Authority, it's not expected to be more than about a floor per week, same as the tower's rising.

Another update from the Port Authority:

I still think it's for installation of the prismatic base cladding in early 2012. They'll need to winch up those panels from somewhere. Those spaces are perfect to allow a hoist to lower a cable and bring up the base cladding.

This whole WTC rebuilding thing seems to be a big secret in most parts of the world that I have visited in the past 3 years. (Germany, Greece, Japan, Italy, U.A.E.) It is not much of a surprise that our neighbors to the north are ill informed.

Glad you could join us in the excitement.:notacrook:

Thanks! I am actually more excited about this project than any other I have ever seen. It's good to see it is being done right, and still remaining a memorial to everyone who perished on that site, as well as being a powerful testament to American perserverance.

When they first install a piece of steel they bolt it down by hand. After everything is plumbed and squared they will tighten it with a power wrench (and maybe weld it too).

NEW YORK (AP) – Steel construction has reached the halfway point for 1 World Trade Center, the building that many people still call the Freedom Tower.

After years of stalled development, steel at the building reached the 52nd story on Thursday, more than 600 feet above ground.

The tower is slated to stand at 104 stories, with an antenna reaching hundreds of feet higher, bringing it to a symbolic 1,776 feet - the tallest in the city.

The building was renamed to better attract corporate tenants. But the Freedom Tower name has stuck for many, and still remains on the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation’s website detailing the rebuilding.

The skyscraper is one of several envisioned at a rebuilt site, along with a Sept. 11 memorial, transit hub and performing arts center.

They were just measuring by floor heights, which is where they went wrong

It's like 615 feet to the top of the steel now, not even halfway to the observatory deck.

at 888 (or 684 feet) feet they can say it's officially halfway. It needs a couple more weeks.

World Trade Center build at halfway point

17 December 2010

Steel construction has reached the halfway point for New York's 1 World Trade Center.

The Manhattan building, also known as the Freedom Tower, stands more than 600ft (180m) high.

The tower will eventually have 104 stories, with an antenna reaching hundreds of feet higher, bringing it to 1,776ft - making it the tallest in the country.

Steve Coleman, spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said he was hopeful they would finish the building by the end of 2011.
