View Full Version : What kind of camera do you use?

I just bought a new digital camera. I was just wondering what camera's you guys use, and how you like them.

I got a SONY CYBER-SHOT. Do any of you guys know anything about that camera?

Anyway I tested it out today, and I am pretty sure I will keep this one. It seems to work well and be clear.

Anyway was just wondering if any of you guys had any advice.

Good choice. I have the Canon S2 IS. It was last years model, but the extra 1 megapixels couldn't justify to me the extra $100-$150.

This camera I got has a 10X zoom. I could have got 12X, but I was being cheap and did not want to spend the extra money. It is 6 mega pixels.

Anyway I hope it does well.

12x, 10x it's all good so long as it's not digital zoom.

I was shooting earlier today. Gotta love the zoom.

So whats wrong with digital zoom? My camera zooms without me having to focus it or anything. Or is that normal zoom?

niwell
Jan 7, 2007, 10:08 PM
^Digital zoom isn't really zoom per se. It is the same as if you were to take a picture, crop out a portion and then expand that portion to full size. So there is a noticeable drop in quality. If the quality doesn't drop when you zoom it is optical. Most cameras I've used have a seperate setting to turn on digital zoom as well, and it is off by default.

Oh, and I have a Canon 20D.

There is optical zoom and digital zoom, optical zoom uses the optics of the camera just like a 35mm type of camera, digital zoom is pretty much like zooming in on a picture in Photoshop or other similar program. It pixelates images pretty bad when the digital zoom is used over the top of optical zoom. I have turned off the digital zoom in my cameras after using it once, the picture quality degrades rapidly.

I looked for the largest optical zoom that I could find when I bought a new camera this fall to replace a 6 year old 2mp Panasonic that had seen its fair share of abuse. I bought a Panasonic DMC-FZ7K (http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vModelDetail?storeId=15001&catalogId=13401&itemId=96060&modelNo=DMC-FZ7K&cacheProgram=11002&cachePartner=7000000000000005702&surfModel=DMC-FZ7K&catGroupId=24999&surfCategory=Lumix%AE&displayTab=A), it is a 6mp camera with a 12x optical zoom and does video clips. I am still learning the idiosyncrasies that all cameras have but like it so far.

Digital zoom is just stupid and I'm amazed by the amount of people I see who are convinced that it's just as good as optical zoom. Seriously, I'll just Photoshop out a digital zoom later and keep the original with everything around the cropped section.

TheMeltyMan

Digital zoom flat out ruins the rez beyond some 2x and I've made sure to confine my eye to what the natural eye can see.

I've got a Canon Powershot SD600. It seems to have treated me well, and a few of my shots are so vivid and perfect that I fail to see the need to spend the extra green on a better camera.

miketoronto
Jan 7, 2007, 10:37 PM
My old camera is a Canon Power Shot also?

It did do me well. But the last little while it has started to not work well. So thats why I bought a new camera. But my canon did work well.

Anyway I told the guy at the camera store I take mostly city shots, and stuff, and this SONY CYBER SHOT is the one he suggested. I asked him if I should go more expensive, and he basically said the difference between the one I got and the more expensive ones is not that big, unless you are blowing up your pics alot into large large sizes.

So we will see. I hope it works out well. You guys think I made a good choice?

I find the digital camera situation to be very frustrating. I grew up using film and really got into it and even started using medium and large format cameras. I have a Plaubel Makina 67 camera which is my favorite. It's a medium format camera and the film is about five times larger than 35mm film so the quality is excellent. I've got a digital Canon PowerShot A95 and it's ok but when you buy a digital camera it's an antique a year or two later because they keep increasing the megapixels and quality. I'm sure this is planned so you'll keep on buying more of them. If you bought a film 35mm camera 30 years ago it would still take high quality photos today and be comparable to any film camera on the market. I know that digitals have some advantages over film, I just don't want to have to buy a new one every two or three years.

^If you bite the bullet and get a decent DSLR then that isn't really the case. The 20D/30D basic model has been around for a while and it's perfectly acceptable. The 1D has been top of the line for quite a while too. Of course the lenses for DSLRs will stay current even if the camera body doesn't.

But yeah, for point and shoot you're right. And the quality of even the best DSLR still doesn't compare to that of medium or large format cameras.

I use a Nikon D50 with an 18-55mm and a 55-200mm lens. I still have my old Canon Powershot A75, but I haven't used it in ages. I still keep it around just in case though.

Regarding the continual development of digital cameras: I wouldn't be too concerned about it. For point and shoot cameras, the major selling point seems to be the resolution; however, for most people, they will never need more than 3.6 megapixels which is perfectly fine for printing 4"x6" photos. Since most camera development is with resolution, you're unlikely to find a huge improvement a year later except with resolution which isn't terribly important anyway.

With Digital SLRs, you are much more flexible. The prices are generally significantly higher, but since you buy it in components, it's harder for your camera to become obsolete. Most of the quality is in the lenses anyway, but if the resolution or sensor becomes an issue, you can always buy a new camera body that works with your existing lenses instead of buying a whole new system. Generally I would recommend a DSLR if you're enthuisiastic about photography - a P-and-S is really frustrating to work with if you are used to the flexibility of an SLR.

I've honestly only owned a camera for the first time since January second of this year and with my seriously limited expertise with the Canon powershot SD600 I managed some quite nice pics. They might fail in a few regards, but I've found it to be the best starter camera I could possibly own.

Just got a Canon PowerShot SD800 (seems to be a popular camera around here..). It's pretty nice and I can get some great shots, but the zoom sucks - only 4x optical zoom, then 7x digital zoom from there, which is pretty limiting. Otherwise, I find it takes pretty good night shots (without a tripod that is), and the LCD screen's resolution is just stunning.

There is a photographer here in Austin that I know, he has the D-SLR but on his recent motorcycle trips to Mexico he started taking a Panasonic point and shoot type instead of carrying the larger equipment, he even has some video clips on his website with the Panasonic. One thing that concerns me about digital images is how good the quality is if you're making a fairly large photo, say something bigger than 8x10. Have any of you made large prints with the higher quality (more megapixel) cameras and if you have how do they compare with a 35mm print? Also, have any of you used these internet companies that make prints and ship by mail? Thanks.

My sister deaslw tih photographers at work, and they all use regular film cameras, because they are still the best.

But when you are shooting things all the time like us fourmers, digital really helps as you can pick and choose what to print :)

I don't care what tech people have with hardisks, cd's etc. I always get the pics I like the most printed out at the photo lab near my house.

I know that he has a high MP D-SLR and was pretty skeptic about the quality compared to what he could do in his darkroom, he was pleasantly surprised with the results. He said that he shoots everything in RAW format and does post-processing in Photoshop. I know that you can get poster size prints of his from some of the sources he has listed. He rarely uses film much anymore.

I bought my 6mp camera in November and still haven't printed anything off it yet, I could still do an 11x17 with my 2mp and it wasn't too bad, not near as good as 35mm but considering what I was using it was better than expected, I pretty much tried to limit it to 8x10 size. I would imagine the 6mp would be that much better. I want to eventually get a D-SLR but just wanted a better P-N-S at this time.

I have an 11x17 inkjet (HP 9650) and a Konica-Minlota magicolor 2530DL (http://printer.konicaminolta.com/products/color/mc2530DL/index.asp) color laser printer, the laser is just great but the only problem is not as many photo types of papers are available for the laser. i have never used an outside printer.

You can buy lens cleaner at any camera store, though I don't think that is what's responsible for the grain in your shots. What ISO are you using? Does your camera have a noise reduction setting?

I agree. I have a manual SLR (Minolta X-7A), a point and click digital (Nikon Coolpix 4600 4.1 MP) and a digital SLR (Olympus E-500 8.0 MP) and my Minolta is the best for the perfect shot. They have all given me great pics, but digital does that because you can take pics in volume. However, when film is precious and one has to think and compose carefully, the overall quality of each individual shot is better with a film camera.

Nikon D80 with both a 28-70mm lens and a 70-300mm lens. I also own a Canon Powershot S2 point-and-shoot. And I concur with Urbanflyer, it's the best models for point-and-shoot period. Great platform.

12x, 10x it's all good so long as it's not digital zoom.

I was shooting earlier today. Gotta love the zoom.

You should be anxious. That's what I shoot with and I have to say, it's the best thing since sliced bread. I love it. Congratulations!!!!!

Canon 350D (Digital Rebel XT) with the kit 18-55 lens right now - but I'm flying out to Hong Kong in a couple of days and looking to pick up a Sigma 70-300 and possibly the Canon 50mm f/1.8

I highly recommend the 50/1.8. What's not to like about an $80 lens that can do this?

Just got a Nikon D50 with the 18-55 kit lens. It's really nice but quite different from the kodak p&s that I learned on. I even braved the cold last week to try it out--just starting to get the hang of it--my first thread using the nikon is in my sig.

Nikon Coolpix 5400...i've had it for the past two years. nice manual controls make it more than a point and shoot...PROSUMER BABY!!!

i also have a Coolpix 2500 which i use for concerts/bars or carrying around in my pocket when i don't want to lug the 5400 around.

then there's the Holga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holga), which uses 120 film and is for fun/artsy stuff, or places where i don't want to really take a digicam (like a sandy beach or wet environment.)

some pics:

plus an old Kodak box camera that takes 620 film that i rarely use.

I've been pretty happy with my little Kodak Z700. 4M 5X optical. Night shots can be ok with a lot of trial and error. I wish I had more zoom.
