View Full Version : Rapid City, South Dakota's Best Skyline ++ Tons of PICS of the Black Hillls

Here are a few pics of South Dakota's best skyline. Nestled within the beautiful Black Hills and with a metro pop. of 120,00 Rapid City is second to none in South Dakota. Sioux Falls may be bigger but Rapid City's skyline and setting just plain have it beat (which isn't really saying much but hey it's South Dakota). http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f196/bcfranke/Canon1118.jpg

Rapid City looks like a nice small city.

The natural setting is great! Do you have higher quality of those nature pictures? I'd like to use a few as backgrounds on my computer some time.

Great job taking pics of this city. It's exactly as i remember it. I've also been hiking up to that same spot that you had in the Black Hills with that hole in the rock. Also, a photo tour of Rapid is not complete without the dinosaurs! BTW is this where you live? I've got a couple of great friends that live out in that freezing arse windy place! ;)

I know, I need to get out and take a few of the dinosaurs, gotta love the hoakie americana. Yeah, I grew up here but I just moved back from Vegas in March, I was there for 3 years and Denver for 5. I didn't really care for Vegas but I do miss Denver quite a bit. I think L.A. is next, probably some time this spring or summer.

The city reminds me a lot of Maryville, Tennessee. The scenic pictures are stunning. Really beautiful.

Ooo, nice! I'm a small town/city aficionado, too. I've only passed through there once, and it was too foggy to see much, but I remember thinking this would be the perfect spot for a major city. It looks bigger than I thought it would -- looks about the size of the "big cities" in Montana. I hope Rapid City can continue to prosper.

You know there's got to be a story behind a rowhouse ending up all by its lonesome. I'm thinking there's a ghost town involved.

Hey, someone who's familiar with Maryville! I lived there for a short while about 10 years ago. It's a really great town - very pretty. And you can't beat the setting!

Anyway, regarding Rapid City....I think it looks like a humble, very nice city. I've often thought about taking a road trip and heading in that direction. Could be an interesting place to explore! Nice shots. Thanks for sharing them, because I really was wondering what the city looked like, other than the few shots you see doing a web search.

Yes, I'm familiar with where Wall Drug is. I was kidding around... ;)

But seriously, no phototour of Rapid City and the Black Hills is complete without Wall Drug, Deadwood, perhaps Sturgis, Lead, and of course the obligatory Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse photos! Hahaha

You know there's got to be a story behind a rowhouse ending up all by its lonesome. I'm thinking there's a ghost town involved.

That's the booming metropolis of Cascade Springs about 70 miles south of Rapid. Originally they wanted to lure a railroad by building a resort town by the natural springs but when the railroad decided a different route the town was no more. I think that building was the bank but now it stands alone as some lucky persons beautiful home.

I was in Rapid City/Custer State Park for a week in 2001. Very friendly people live there. The hills were a killer on my car's transmission and brakes though.

Actually RC's largest industry is tourism. I lived there for a short while and loved it. A lot of social issues in the area. Its a facinating place even when you look beyond Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Deadwood, Sturgis Rally. The Wounded Knee Massacre site is just a couple of hours away. The Badlands are an amazing geological event. The people are terrific, the scenery is unique but it is so isolated. Maybe that's what makes it great...

Actually he did a poor job showing the A. Johnson Hotel (from the back). Its the best in Rapid city. It feels straight out of 'the shining'. From the higher floors on the west side you get amazing views of the black hills which are the tallest Mountains east of the rockies. Your comment/joke was pretty lame... better luck next time.
