It's been forever since we've had a Portland photo thread in the city photos section...so since Time magazine named us, the 'people of the year' I figured it would only makes sense, in keeping with the Time's spirit, to have a photo thread assemble by all the excellent pics taken by...well...you...and mostly Dougall...over the past few months. If you've got some P-town pics, post them here, otherwise, I've just picked a few various pics to show mostly the latest on Portland's developments.

nice Okstate...how long until you move out here?

Damn, I took all those photos for a thread and never got around to posting them. Guess I need to ramp up the work again. I've been traveling Oregon for business the last three months and have Bend/Redmond, Corvallis, Salem, Astoria, Cannon Beach, Lincoln City, Depot Bay, and Albany to post in another thread too...

I'll be in Salem in a few weeks. I'll try to get some shots of the 2nd largest city in Oregon.

.....Not much to show in Salem. Very bland. Extremely bland.

I'll be heading that way around the end of July (08') unless U of Oregon accepts me & PSU doesn't for the masters program. I'm much more interested in Portland. Until then, this is my only outlet (and an outstanding one at that).

Has there ever been pictures taken of 23rd or 21st street posted on here? I know this area gets alot of blah remarks due to the "yuppies" but i'd be interested in seeing what this part of the city look like. I know goosehollow gets included as do some NW photos, i've just never noticed these streets on here in particular.

okstate, check out www.portlandground.com - all kinds of pictures of the city, organized by neighborhood.

northwest - the neighborhood around 23rd - is pretty yuppified, but the southern end, with more apartments, seems to have a higher proportion of young student types. 23rd itself though is a hopeless row of boutiques.

21st is lined with some good drinking holes. :)

Of course, not as many as there used to be... and all these expen$ive Italian restaurants are popping up. I mean, why do you really need 5 Tuscan-styled restaurants in a row?!

That undeveloped acreage south of the Marquam must be prime for development....Does OHSU own pieces of that, also? If they do, I wonder if they will be considering selling it instead of carrying out their own expansion plans.

Loyola here in Chicago was having financial issues about 6 years ago and they have had a massive building boom over the last few years.....so don't get your hopes down.

⇑ No, Zilfondel....I didn't forget the old thread but there appears a lot is happening "recently" with OHSU financially. I was raising the possibility that if OHSU was presently involved in the future development they could pull out, or sell, their options on this piece of property.... I realize my post might have been repetitive but not all people on this forum (members and lurkers) would know about the previous posts or care to research to find them. (I think it is time for me to take a break from the forum. I know you weren't trying to be offensive and I am getting way too cranky. It's definitely time I take a break and just lurk.)

Okay, ok! I hear ya... I just figured that its easy for us to forget about all the older threads since this new forum system makes it easy to ignore them.

Yeah, they won't sell it... although it would be worth a ton of money; they would have no way to expand in the future if they did. I would also be surprised if they didn't coordinate better with PSU in the future.

What I found interesting was that the PDF for OHSU's plan was updated very recently...

Looking at the Panoramic photo of Southern Waterfront above, does anyone else think the Ross Island Bridge should be turned into the Ross Island Tunnel? Or at least rebuilt so that it returns to street grade much sooner on the west side of the River?

I realize this would be a very expensive proposition, but it seems like the value of the land there would be much greater if there wasn't a bridge bisecting it.

Yeah, PSU would never have anything down there, besides the fact that the college owns plenty of land to expand around its campus for many years to come. It has buying a few buildings on the northern end of the college as well as alot of buildings all the way to to University Place, which they also own.

The only reason why I say PSU would never do anything down in south waterfront if given the chance is because when the architecture department was looking for a temporary home and was looking at some unique places in the city, like the Customs building, the school shot it down because they were all too far from campus.

I am happy to see that OHSU has selected a grid like plan to keep with some form of urban connection to the rest of that area. I just wish massive construction was going on there now....waiting is always the crappy part. I would like to see them sell of some of the land and push for a more mixed development, so as it is not just the college there. But I think for SoWa to work, it is going to need their site to start developing.

Its funny, it is starting to become its own little city down there....granted it is a city of overpriced condos, but rich people need a place to live too. :haha:

Some photos I took in the Sunnyside neighborhood (Belmont and a couple blocks south) back in the fall. These were taken that weekend when there was a ton of rain, flooding all throughout the Northwest, I-5 closed in Chehalis, WA, etc. I was thinking I’d get back to that hood and finish off a full “neighborhood tour,” but never did. I haven't seen the Benson up close since last May, but I completely disagree with your opinion. I like the almost nautical architecture, the colors, and the variance in materials and shape. Perhaps most of all I like that it is not a variation of theme, as are most of the buildings of the Pearl and South Waterfront. Could the Benson have been better? Of course, and that is true of every building.

Here is another HDR shot. This is looking down from my building on 5th Avenue. Believe it or not, I had to desaturate the trees a little bit to make it look real.

Being the bonehead I am I wasn't sure what HDR is so I Googled. Here is a pretty good explanation (I think).

High dynamic range imaging
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In image processing, computer graphics, and photography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI or just HDR) is a set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range of luminances between light and dark areas of a scene than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention of HDRI is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to shadows.
High dynamic range imaging was originally developed in the 1930s and 1940s by Charles Wyckoff. Wyckoff's detailed pictures of nuclear explosions appeared on the cover of Life magazine in the mid 1940s. The process of tone mapping together with bracketed exposures of normal digital images, giving the end result a high, often exaggerated dynamic range, was first reported in 1993, and resulted in a mathematical theory of differently exposed pictures of the same subject matter that was published in 1995. In 1997 this technique of combining several differently exposed images to produce a single HDR image was presented to the computer graphics community by Paul Debevec.
This method was developed to produce a high dynamic range image from a set of photographs taken with a range of exposures. With the rising popularity of digital cameras and easy-to-use desktop software, the term HDR is now popularly used to refer to this process. This composite technique is different from (and may be of lesser or greater quality than) the production of an image from a single exposure of a sensor that has a native high dynamic range. Tone mapping is also used to display HDR images on devices with a low native dynamic range, such as a computer screen.

I tried playing around with HDR a little bit. I know most people don't care for the over-stylized, fake-looking HDR, and I tried not to get too crazy with it, but I'm new to it, so cut me some slack. :)

All were created using a free program called qtpfsgui (catchy name, right? ;)). Larger versions are available on my flickr page if you click the photo (and then click "all sizes" on the flickr page). There are also a couple other HDR photos on there.

Taken looking north down 5th Avenue. I love being able to see the snow-covered hills in the distance, since the conditions required to see them only happen a few times a year.

I'm from Vancouver, that snazzy-looking (well, at some angles) city vertically pushing high-rises like mushrooms, linked by a high-speed rail system.

OK

Please excuse that preamble, and continue to say what I came here to say.
Metropolitan Portland and Metropolitan Vancouver have tightly close metro populations..
You may not have quite the same look as Vancouver, but you have a higher city GNP.
Somehow, that good ol' American 'know how' is there and "just do it" without massive overseas infusions.
And you do it unostationsiously, and with a charming cityscape with wonderful views.
Plus a charming mix of modern, but a lot of heritage buildings, a good tramway, and lastly, that magnificent fountain square.

So Vancouver can razzle-dazzle all it wants, but Portland makes more money.

Seattle, of course, is the "big boy on the block" and is the home of Microsoft,
and many affiliated "silicon valley" type industries, Boeing, (yes I know the hq is in Chicago, but still...)
(.........and it's gaining several major foreign airlines.)

But Portland and Vancouver somehow complement each other.
Thank you for your time and consideration, good neighbour!;)

Some shots from the Portland Winter Light Festival a couple weeks ago. This is a great event that spans several blocks from Pioneer Square to the World Trade Center to the waterfront, with DJ's, performers, food carts, etc.
