Here are the results from the Austin forum meet from this past weekend in Austin. 5 of us, including myself, Greg, Mopacs, JDawgBoy, and LoneStarMike attended.

We also bumped into a celebrity. We stopped in at a restaurant in downtown to eat. We're all standing there in the entrance looking over a menu. Myself, and 2 other forumers had our cameras out. I was nearest to the door. I hear the door open and 3 or 4 people stroll in and a woman places her hand on my arm and says: "There will be no photography, thank you." It kind of caught me off guard, like "Huh?" I figured this woman was the manager or owned the place and didn't want any flash photography in this nice restaurant. So I look up to tell her I won't take any and it was Sandra Bullock. We found out a few minutes later that she actually owns the restaurant. She lives in Austin, too.

Anyway, onto the photos of that day.

Great shots. That Office Max photo is the best shot of Austin I have seen. Almost wish a little I was there. Just a little. ;)

I like how the photos show the funkiness of Austin, which is a big part of its appeal. Anything goes here. I also love the back alley shot. This is one of the few cities in this part of the country with alleys all over the place. A lot of people don't like them, but they remind me of when I lived back east for a while, years ago.

^ If you watch the Tommy Lee Jones movie "Man of the House", there's a scene with him chasing a guy down that alley. It's near the beginning of the movie and sets up the whole plot for the movie.

That 360 condominium highrise looks eerily similar to the Spire, which is a highrise condo tower set to break ground soon in Denver.

Nice work there, Kevin!

^ There's a similar one in Atlanta, too that's actually called Spire also. Is the one in Denver by Novare?

Excellent photos. Austin has changed a lot since my only visit (http://robertpence.com/austin_tx_1981_p1.html) there in 1981. Very interesting city.

Oh wow. May of 1981. Rob, you mention on your site that there was a really bad flood during your trip. That's what Austinites know as the Memorial Day flood. I heard my parents talk about that. It was VERY bad. There were car dealerships in downtown that had brand new cars wash into the nearby creek. Some of them are even still there because they were buried in the creek by the flood. My dad and my brother and I would go "creeking", we'd go down and dig out all the collected metal and junk that washes into the creek. We'd sift through it and find everything from change to gold rings. I remember walking across the roof of one of the cars once that had washed into the creek. It's probably still there as a matter of fact.

And I quite enjoyed your photos of Austin on your site. Awesome!

Thanks for sharing that with us Rob. Wow, I really liked the DT shots of Dallas and of Austin.

Excellent photos. Austin has changed a lot since my only visit (http://robertpence.com/austin_tx_1981_p1.html) there in 1981. Very interesting city.

WOW, thanks for sharing! I can't get enough of this photo especially, taken from South Congress:

I'll see if I can get a photo from the exact same angle as yours (which was taken a few blocks to the south of my photo's vantage point).

EDIT...

Greg: Try picturing Altavida in those recent shots, and you'll know what I meant by it balancing out the skyline view from South Congress.

^ Note the cranes in rob_1412's picture. The blue tower crane to the extreme far left is for the Hyatt Regency Town Lake. And the red crawler crane about two inches to the right is for One American Center. That is a VERY cool picture.

This thread is delicious.

Another item of note: There are a LOT more trees lining Congress Avenue downtown today than in '81.

Or maybe mostly the same trees, just 25 years bigger.

That is certainly possible, yep. I do know that many of the trees lining North Congress avenue were planted during the 1980s. Any Austin forumers know more about the plantings?

Lovin' the pics from this meet (and 1981 also). 360 looks great in the rendering. Austin sure has a ton of projects going on (including a nice array of talls). Thanks for the pics guys.

BTW Rob, isn't it amazing how fast 25 years went by? That's when I started dating my wife.

I remember when they were planted. Along about 1984, when Manuel's at
3rd and Congress opened (been eating there all these years!) the city decided to try to spruce up Congress Ave by planting these trees (some sort of deciduous oak). For years, the trees received little care, in keeping with the general neglect of downtown and Congress Ave in that decade. But eventually the trees recovered and grew, and the avenue started looking better overall. I think with all the new residents moving downtown, it can only get better with time.

Great pics, fellas!

It's easy to see why Austin has the best reputation in Texas. The boom downtown makes this native Houstonian jealous!

Thanks! FYI... I took that photo through my side-view mirror, stopped at a stoplight. Of course the image was later flipped.

Wow, these pictures sure do capture the essence of the current construction boom in downtown Austin, all of the pictures are just awesome. It's a pity I had classes as I sure would have gone to the meet otherwise.

By the way, are there any renderings of what the goodwill site will look like?
