I have tons of Vegas photos saved on my hard drive, so I thought I’d share a few of my favorites.

To start off, one of my pics from up above my neighborhood, looking west across the valley. April, 2006.

I love skylines where one building, like the Stratosphere tower, stands head and shoulders above the rest -- the "Maypole effect." Las Vegas isn't for me (although it bloody well might be if it got something like 20 times the rain per year that it does), but these pictures are sweet indeed.

About the first picture

When I was a kid I moved to the suburbs from the inner city, and my neighborhood was surrounded by miles of desert on three sides. As you can see, it is now surrounded by sprawl. It’s easy to see where the new houses are because they don’t have trees visible yet. Notice the two closest sprawl-divisions. They are gated “communities” and I’ve never even been in them. They are about five years old. The large subdivision further away on the left with trees starting to show is over ten years old. It has thousands of tract homes, but also apartments, parks and schools. So at least it’s better that those gated communities. The closest stores/restaurants/bars are about a mile away from my house.

People forget that this is a beautiful, beautiful place in terms of nature (if you like the desert). I just hate this goddamn tract housing. That and the cost of living. My dad works at the airport, and I am currently living in bumblefuck Henderson. Hopefully this thread changes the minds of the people that think this place is fake. Fremont Street is the shit.

I don't really make it to the Strip that often anymore, but we should as it gets a little closer to Christmas.

I love the landscape out there, its just the lifestyle, architecture and climate I can't stand. Vegas doesn't have the classic skyline and for some reason that grates me against going there.

Forgetting that, I think these are this is the best collection of Vegas pics i've ever seen.

The couple of times I've been to Las Vegas I've spent a lot of time exploring the surroundings (e.g., Red Rock Canyon, Mt. Charleston, Lake Mead, etc.). It's one of the most spectacular settings in the country. If you just fly in and fly out, you've really missed an amazing place. I like the city, too, but mostly the surroundings.

One thing that surprised me was that the airport vitually sits beside the Strip. Too bad so many city airports aren't that convenient.

Vegas is Awesome!

Ok I have a question about Las Vegas, basically from my understanding Las Vegas has no corporate tax and no state income tax. With that said, why aren't more high tech companies moving their Headquarters or operations from California to Las Vegas?
Seems like for a company Las Vegas would be a better choice than to relocate , cheaper on both the employee and companies. SO why are companies not relocating to Vegas?

I grew up right outside of Vegas so I have seen the many changes over the years. I find it funny how most people have such a strong reaction one way or the other when it comes to Vegas. People tend to have negative reactions when talking about cities located in the desert in general, like they are unnatural even though people and civilization have inhabited deserts for thousands of years. Now i am not saying Vegas is an environmentally friendly city, quite the opposite as of now, but it is quite nice in some areas and as stated before where it is located geographically it is surrounded by beautiful natural areas.

True, but those civilizations were built along RIVERS, whereas Vegas sprung up in the middle of the desert as a little rail depot. If not for Hoover Dam and legalized gambling, Vegas would be nothing. I sure hope all of that conspicuous water consumption in Vegas is enjoyable for the natives and tourists, because it is causing an environmental catastrophe for the Colorado River.

When an airport is so close to the central part of the city, it isnt always a good thing. Being that close means the buildings will have to have height restrictions.

The reason there are so many tech companies in California is:

1) The schools. There are a lot of advanced universities in the silicon valley region that have a large focus on technology.

2) The fact that there are a lot of tech companies there only encourages more to come. There are many skilled workers there to grab and there are many venture capitalist willing to invest in you.

Well vegas isnt terribly far from the colorado, much closer than phoenix or so. cal. Further, southern nevada only gets 300,000 acre feet from the colorado, much less than thier california or arizona counterparts. I am not removing Vegas form being culpable with the degredation fo the colorado, but it seems to get more than its fair burden of criticism. Also you cant really balme folks for moving into the desert, after all its only the modern manifestation of manifest destiny.....the whole american culture is to blame. That and most cities wouldnt exist in their present form with out huge amounts of technological engineering.

"When the river's flow was divided among seven states in 1922, Las Vegas was little more than a crossroads. Nearly a century later, 400 farmers in California's Imperial Valley still get 10 times more Colorado River water than Las Vegas does."

Las Vegas translates to "the meadows" in Spanish due to the once abundant underground springs in the area. Native people have lived in the Las Vegas valley for thousands of years before white people came and built the Hoover Dam and legalized gambling. Ofcourse Las Vegas wouldn't be what it is today without those things but how are cities like Miami which sprung up on the edge of the everglades or New Orleans that was built on the Mississippi river delta any less environmentally unfriendly than Vegas. All cities destroy their environments in some way. Currently, I live in Seattle where there was once an old growth rainforest and now there is a city.

In relation to modern Las Vegas, where were these springs located? Downtown? Are any still preserved today? I seem to remember there are a few in a park -- I want to say Floyd Lamb State Park, but I can't be certain.

Las Vegas could certainly use more density; however, the cityscape strikes me as "controlled sprawl" (for lack of a better way of putting it). Consider: when driving north on I-15, you enter your first developed areas near EXIT 27, and you leave your last developed areas near EXIT 58. That's a development diameter of 31 miles, which is relatively compact for a metro of 2,000,000+.

I predict that Las Vegas will soon begin to densify the way Atlanta has in the past 10 years, especially if they're building a new airport away from the Strip. (If that happens, expect any height restrictions to be lifted.) Also, as the metro's population continues to increase, its footprint will increase as well, but probably not to the extent that some "anti-sprawl" people here believe it will. I expect most new development in the next 20 years to be in the eastern quadrant of the metro, including Henderson and Boulder City. Other areas where I expect new development to occur (although at not nearly the rate expected to the east):

- Immediate north near I-15 and the Las Vegas Motor Speedway
- Immediate southwest along NV 160

Ironically, I think the areas least prone to new development in metro Las Vegas are those closest to I-15 (with the exception of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway area). I-15 south of Las Vegas, in particular, will remain desolate.

The northwest still has a bit left to fill in, and it's easily one of the fastest growing parts of the city and metro. And, the city is sinking a considerable amount of time and effort into building up there rest of the west and northwest sides.

The Springs Preserve is a couple miles west of downtown. The preserve sits on 180 acres and is currently under construction. It’s a 250 million dollar project, with new museums, desert gardens, and trails, so it should be pretty cool. The springs stopped flowing to the surface naturally many years ago due to depletion of the water table. www.springspreserve.org/

There are many other springs in Southern Nevada, including Tule Springs at Floyd Lamb State Park in northwest Las Vegas. Corn Creek at the entrance to the Desert National Willife Range. A few around Lake Mead, and dozens in the Spring Mountains.

Vtown, some people find it strange, but I've always enjoyed downtown. But, it's probably because it reminded me of the grit back home. I think it's authentically "Old Vegas." The street shows on the Fremont pedestrian mall are always cool to watch. It's probably the only true urban-feeling, human-scale neighborhood of Vegas.

My favorite shot:

Like a supermodel, this city 'makes love to the camera!' Like I eluded to in an earlier LV thread, I would not want to live there, but what a party!

I'm not surprised, it certainly gets cold enough in Vegas to snow. Visiting the city in the summer would make it hard to imagine it can get so cold there. I made the mistake 20 years ago of going in the winter with only a light jacket. OMG I thought I was in Chicago in the middle of winter (lol).

I've been in Vegas several times when it was cold. I was in Vegas the first week of this month and at one point it was 34 degrees and the winds were sustained at 40 mph (I checked online--what a geek). It felt quite cold, and the sun didn't make any difference.

Oh come on people. Calling Las Vegas beautiful is like calling Brittany a 'nice girl'. Vegas is many things but beautiful she ain't. Las Vegas is a totally fun place to visit but for me it matter not how many condo towers go up it's still a seriously flawed place in that it represents all that is wrong with 'urban' development in America since WWII. Also for me there's just something weird about a place whose economy is based on gambling. Plus it's gotta be the most un-green city in the world. Having said that I'll still go there for a fun weekend.

Vegas is sui generis, suburban sprawl with a vertical element. It's bizarre to see a gated community of high-rise condos, or a 50 story building surrounded by barren desert and abandoned street crud. It works because people have a taste for opulence divorced from taste. As a city, it's like an Elvis impersonator: cheesy, fun, and empty.

Astonishing photos - quite jaw droppingly amazing. Wonderful natural scenery - glorious sunsets - incredible all round.

However... I was criticised on another thread for calling Vegas 'vulgar' - but I'm sorry - it is. I can only say I agree 100% with what ozone says above. Don't go to Vegas with its post-modern casinos - go to the real Paris, Venice, New York, pyramids, if you can!

One poster was saying Las Vegas economy is dependent on gaming. Most people would be surprised to learn that the percentage of people who now come here to gamble as fallen to 27%. Las Vegas saw it coming, and went on to make this city a shopping mecca and gastronomic mecca.

Las Vegas also knew that the younger generation coming here, has little or no interest in gambling, so they asked: What is it you want from us?
Expensive multi-million dollar disco's with steep cover charges and drink prices, and now they're all over, from one end of the Strip to the other!

Las Vegas will always find a way of robbing you blind before you get back to the Airport!

Also noteworthy: That Stratosphere tower was originally planned to rise 2000 feet, but the FAA chopped it down to 1149 feet!
