I have a great job that sometimes takes me to interesting places in the city.
Every now and then I get the opportunity to get up in church towers or other high buildings.
Here’s a bunch of pics that I’ve taken during the last years from such places.

The first set of pics are taken from the old Central Post Office, located just by the Central Railway station.
Pics from June 2004.

Central Railway station. The church tower belongs to St Petri church, built in the 14th century.

The old Harbour’s office and in the background the blue highrise Kronprinsen built in 1960.

http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/3936/0406NorraVallgatan.jpg

The highrise is Slagthuset, an office building from the early 90’s. Not my cup of tea…

Ferry to Travemunde in Germany.
http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/8115/0406Frja.jpg

The University Library under construction, in the background Turning Torso.

The same view a year later.

The City Tunnel project getting started, in September 2005. A railroad tunnel is being built under the city,
to achieve a faster connection between Malmö and Copenhagen.

The next set of pics are taken from the Sydsvenskan Building – a newspaper highrise in the outskirts of the city.
Pics from May 2005.

Now we move on to the southern parts of the central city, to Folkets Park and the ferris wheel there.
Pics from September 2005 and June 2006.

On the horizon you see the city of Lund, 14 kilometers away. The big building is the University Hospital.
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/9793/0606Lund.jpg

The last set of pics are taken from a little ”tower” on top of a residential building in the eastern parts of the central city.
Pics from July 2006.

This is were the pics are taken from. Note the Torso.

The big brick building with two towers in front of the Torso is the Central Post Office, from which I took the first set of photos.

Gorgeous buildings and colors...I want to take all of the bridges and ferries. The proper designation for the Kronprinsen should be 'bluerise' :)

Very cool thread, interesting views! I like the long row of houses and the comparison before/after of the library and torso!

Scandinavian cities are so clean

What is that odd shaped white building on the left in the background?

probably a water tower, but it looks like a UFO

I originally thought that Malmo was a more modern city that's only recently seen a boom, and that there weren't any old historic buildings. I'm glad to see that I was wrong.

^It's a wonderful combination of both. I thoroughly enjoyed the day (I wish it had been much more) I spent in this city last year.

^^ Most pics from Malmo posted on forums like this are from the new developing area Västra Hamnen (Western Harbour) where there's modern architecture and where Turning Torso is. I suspect that lots of people have the same view of Malmö as you, so I'm glad to be able to show the older (and more central) parts of the city.

@jmancuso: Yes, Copenhagen is just across the bridge. Some 30 minutes by train from the Central Station.

What is that odd shaped white building on the left in the background?

Zaphod is right, it's Hyllie water tower, built 1970-72.

Thanks olga. When I go back I'll definitely go up in the Ferris Wheel in Folkets Park.

This a great view of central Malmö!

jmancuso,
20-25 minutes (from Malmö South Station) by train, but the City Tunnel (you can see it u/c on some of the pics) is going to make the trip even shorter and more convenient. Today there isn't enough capacity on the line and often you have to wait for the next train because the current one is completely full. Very frustrating when you commute to work and don't want to drive a car and pay $40 toll.

Grumpy,
zaphod is right. It's a watertower - located where the new neighbourhood Hyllievång is under construction. It's the location of the new 180-220m Malmö Tower, a new indoor arena with 16.000 seats and a City Tunnel station among other things. :)

Couldn't agree more, that building has IMO basically no redeeming qualities.

Actually, if you look to the upper right of the Kronprinsen building in this shot, it does look like a UFO!

I know, I know - I'm sure it's a plane. ;)

Anyway... stunning shots, Olga. It really looks like a beautiful city. Thank you for sharing. It's great to see interesting places you never really knew existed. Such a large world after all!

Let's see, an occupation that takes you into tall buildings eh? My guess is either a window washer of international jewel thief.

Thanks for the tour, great set of pics. And TT has really grown on.

if they built water towers like that in the US, camden would be the coolest city in the world. but, instead of malmo-copenhagen we're working with philly-camden. eh, what can ya do.

really great stuff olga. love your pictures.

What's amazing is how you got so many aerial shots in a city where it looks to be seemingly difficult with the lack of tall buildings. Love the shots.

How long is that bridge to Denmark?

staff
Dec 10, 2006, 4:57 PM
boden,
The bridge itself is 7,8 kilometers long (one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in the world, as well as one of the longest bridges in the world with both rail and "street" traffic). The total length of the Öresund fixed link is some 15 kilometers.

Wow, this was a surprising bump from deep down in the dark archives!

Malmö is a nice place to live. It doesn't look as pleasant as in these pics this time of year though - it feels like I haven't seen the sun in months, it's a constant temperature around 5 degrees Celsius, day and night, week after week... But life can be great nevertheless! :)
