Everyone,
Let’s all get together downtown on December 9th for our second meet. Please throw out suggestions regarding time and agenda. I really like the idea of eating somewhere so that we may enjoy the city and get to know each other. Any other ideas?

I'm pretty much open to whatever you guys plan so long as the day we do it it doesn't rain and isn't too overcast.

And I'm not really too picky about food, burger and fries or whatever sounds great.

Time? Noon to 3 sounds good.

I'll definitely be there! Hopefully we'll get more than 3 folks this time around :D

Might I suggest Joe's Coffee House/cafe on 2nd St? John R, Michael B and I paid a visit to this great establishment during our meet, earlier this year.

Im game on any day. It would be under best conditions if it wasnt rainy or overcast though we will not be able to foresee what that day will ultimatly bring so Ill go either way.

Let’s not even worry about the weather. If its raining then we can postpone, otherwise let’s mark our calendars for December 9th. I would think that by then Alta Vista will have its crane(s) up.

Really? Wow that is pretty fast if they are to put the cranes up by then. Actually I am suprised at how fast they are digging out the hole where the garage will be.

So far Saturday is looking good for the meet. It'll be cloudy, and 57F with a 20 percent chance of rain. But that isn't a very good chance for rain so it should be good.

I'm pumped about it, I look forward to meeting everyone. I've already met 427MM and Mopacs before, but I'd love to meet everyone else as well.

We had a great time. There were five of us who turned up for the meet. I don’t mean to be terse, I am simply too tired to detail the trip thoroughly. I’m sure one of the others will take care of this task.

I had a great time. I'm glad I went, I enjoyed meeting everyone.

We were also a bit star struck this afternoon. For those of you who didn't show up, you missed out a bit.

We went into the Bess Bistro Restaurant at 500 West 6th Street, about 3 blocks east of Huts Hamburgers. We're all standing there in the entrance, I'm at the back nearest to the door. Myself, Mopacs and JDawgboy have our cameras with us. About 4 people come in the door and a women puts her hand on my arm and says: "There will be no photography, thank you." So I'm thinking, "ok, that's a bit strange, but whatever." Maybe she was the manager or whatever and didn't want camera flashes going off in this nice restaurant. So I give a look to reassure her that I got the message and would respect her wishes. And it was none other than Sandra Bullock!

Mopacs
Dec 10, 2006, 1:27 AM
Had a great time too. And yes, Kevin is right, we had a chance enounter with our semi-local celebrity Sandra Bullock. A bit of an unexpected surprrise... and Kevin summed up the moment just right. I've got tons of photos on the way to chronicle the tour, so stay tuned. Great meeting you again Greg, JDawg, Kevin and Mike.

We also found out that Altavida will be 416 feet tall with 37 floors. The previous floor count we had heard from the media was 36. But the guy at the construction site told us it would have 37 floors above ground. Fantastic. Not to mention that means Altavida would be only 99 feet shorter than Frost Bank Tower. So Altavida will rise to just below the Frost Bank logo on the tower. That means that for atleast a short time Altavida will be our 3rd tallest behind 360 Condominiums and Frost Bank Tower.

Just wanted to say it was great meeting Kevin, Greg, Mopacs and JDawgboy. It's nice to be able to match a face with some of the user ID's on here. My favorite part of the day was going over to the Goodwill site and going to the top floor of the not-quite-finished parking garage. Awesome views of downtown from there. I can't wait to see everyone else's pics. Today was a real learning experience for me. Besides learning more about skyscrapers, and construction, I learned just how out of shape I am but it was worth every sore muscle. I'm really looking forward to the next forum meet.

Kevin, you should have reassured her that the cameras were for snapping photos of the skyline and not for grabbing a photo of her and her group.

I would have been tempted to laugh when she said that there will be no photos.

Great pics, Mopacs. I think your camera has a little bit more of a wider zoom than mine does. I tried getting this shot - http://images20.fotki.com/v373/photos/5/54967/3625547/DSCN1460-vi.jpg - and couldn't get the cranes all in the frame and I know I took it from the same spot you did.

I'll get on tonight and post my pics, too.

Great shots and great angles Kevin. Glad you got Sandra's restaurant too (I was too busy trying to absorb the moment following our chance encounter). This pic is cool too:

Great pics guys, thanks for taking up the slack. For some reason I was having too much fun discussing all he projects with you guys and only managed to take five pics during the trip. It is hard to imagine just how different everything will be by the next trip.

Looking through all the shots again; Mopacs, I forgot to give a shout out to your great photos. Fantastic.

The amount of construction in DT Austin is awesome, with much more in the pipeline. Austin is BACK in a big way.

Things have sure changed from when I was there in May! I'm sorry that I couldn't make the drive down this time.

Looks like a successful meet, guys! I was in DC this weekend so I couldn't attend, but I'd like an opportunity to take a tour with y'all at some point. Great pics too!

Great pics, hopefully I will be free for the next meet.

The Statesman is long overdue for a comprehensive report on downtown development, underconstruction, projects due to turn dirt and projects awaiting approval complete with stats and renderings...seems like a whole section could be devoted for it.

WOW. Those pictures are seriously surreal to look at considering the Austin I've come to know since moving here in March. Crazy to think that these photos are from only 4 months after I joined this site at age 16! I'd love to meet all of you though! Can you imagine the difference between the last photo thread and ones that may be posted after a new meet-up?

WOW, what a dramatic change! To put things in perspective, there were no iPhones or today's generation of smartphones when these pics were taken. Most of us still had flip phones :)

Hell, I still had a flip phone up until late last year. What strikes me most about these photos is just how much the Frost building dominated the skyline from almost all views. I know everyone says it should have been 100 feet or more taller, but it would have really looked out of place back in 2004 if it was.

Insane how much things have changed in a relatively short time. 2006 was the year Ohio State football came down and played at DKR stadium. Ohio State is scheduled to come back in the 2021-2022 season and I think their repeat fans may not recognize the city.
