View Full Version : Oceanside, CA: Google Sketchup City

Ok First there was Staunton, then there was Staunton 2.0, then Staunton 2.5

Now -
Oceanside, Califorina

Oceanside will be on the West Coast, in Califorina. I havent chose its exact location yet.

- Is Staunton 2.5 Dead?
I dont think so, I might add a few things to Staunton every now and then

- Is Oceanside in the same world as Staunton?
Yes, they will be. Companies like JC Summit and Galviston Enterprises will be in Oceanside.

- How big is Oceanside?
Not as large as Staunton, Oceanside will probably be the 5th largest city in the US (counting Staunton). The CBD will not be as big as Staunton's, Oceanside will have a huge central downtown, with a few minor skylines outside downtown, much like Los Angeles.

- How long will Oceanside last?
Well I ditched Staunton after we got into rowhomes areas, I would like to do the Suburbs, but thats if I dont lose intrest in Oceanside.

- Will Oceanside have a Times Square themed area?
Yes, I think it will be called Oceanside Square, yes creative, I know :haha:

- How tall is the tallest building?
1114 Feet High, taller than the 1067 foot Galviston Enterprises Building in Staunton. The building would be the 7th tallest in the US (roof height and counting buildings under construction)

Oceanside is turning out Really well.

I've added more conceptual buildings, The Skyline is coming out great.

If you havent noticed, Oceanside is based on one of my drawings:
http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/6424/ghjfa4.jpg

Here's an early shot of Downtown Oceanside. As you can see, the feeling of Downtown is completly different from Downtown Staunton. The City is more virbrant and open. Oceanside is a happier city than Staunton, but dose have its bad side, like Los Angeles.

Do I detect a bit of Dubai in there too? some nice very slim towers there, plus that Palmbank Centre reminds me of a certain Emirates tower.

Actually I didnt think About Dubai, mainly Miami and LA. And I didnt know the PalmBank Center looked simular to the Emirates Towers. I just wanted it to have a slanting roof, I just sort of went along with it.

Here are some details on some buildings in Oceanside:

This is Easily my Favorite Building:
US Airlines World Headquarters
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/1113/ghjlc3.jpg http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/9462/ghjph8.jpg

Facts
- 882 Feet High (268.8 Meters High)
- Construction Start: 1989
- Construction End: 1991
- 64 Floors High
- World Headquarters of the Largest Airline Company in the US: US Airlines

But, the building has been built somewhere else,

135 East 57th Street, New York City
http://www.kpf.com/images/Projects/135e57st/n0333_5001z.jpg

Its hands down, one of my favorite buildings of all time. But the only thing wrong with it, is its tiny only 31 Stories high, and 430 feet high.

I just had to model it into Oceanside. I even used the same textures from the original building. Yes I know, creative :haha: Its not an exact copy for example, there are two wings instead of one.

The Oceanside version is about Twice the size.

The Plaza

Streetlevel
http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/3752/ghjod1.jpg

Galviston Enterprises Regional Headquarters
http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/208/ghjij3.jpg http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/3570/ghjuq0.jpg

Facts
- 626 Feet High (190.8 Meters High)
- Construction Start: 1981
- Construction End: 1983
- 46 Floors High
- Regional Headquarters of Staunton Based Galviston Enterprises

Now for some Urban Shots

The Regionbank Tower
The tall, pointy tower, Newley Added, one of my favorites. The picture is taken from the World Entertainment-AlpineFinancial Plaza. This should be a promo shot for Downtown.

New Above the Old
This shows Oceanside's tallest at their finest. (From Left to Right) ComWorld World HQ, Jefferson Stanley Building, Regionbank Tower, One Mace Plaza, AlpineFinancial World Headquarters and the World Entertainment Tower. I'm not sure either to put another skyscraper in this spot (behind the cars is a city block) or to keep it empty for this viewpoint.

Downtown

Ok, that's it!!!!

I've tried time and time again, and I just DON'T see how you get your streets so perfect without overlap! Is there something I'm missing? They always overlapp, and end up looking awful. It's this very reason why I dumped Hampland. It was a GREAT city for skyline shots, but the streets were awful.

By the way, Oceanside looks excellent! I like it even better than Staunton so far!!! Keep up the jaw-dropping work!!

With regards as to whether you should leave that block open...

My philosophy with City City is that if I find a viewpoint that would be ruined by the development of a city block, I make it a park, which is almost always the best thing you can do. I'd recommend the same. :)

FlyersFan118

A closeup on the World Entertainment-AlpineFinancial Plaza. The idea was inpired by the raised plazas in Downtown Los Angeles, due to the hilly terrain. I tried it and it turned out great, plus you can but buildings over streets filling in gaps in the skyline.

I dont get what you mean, have you tried getting your streets to snap on to the axes?

Sorry, I should've made it more clear. lol, sorry if I sounded harsh too, I was just a little frustrated.

I have 2 problems in designing my streets:

1) I can't get mine as perfect as yours. The width is always different for each road, the lines don't match up, and it's just so dang difficult.

2) The textures look really weird, all in all, because when I paint, the road lines don't go in the direction of the road itself. Sometimes the lines go diagonally on the road, it depends on the direction.

I'm sorry i can't make this less conufsing. I don't exactly know how to explain it, but if you still have trouble understanding me, I'll provide screenshots next time.

Thanks!
Anthony

BTW: My favorite building would have to be the PalmBank building, Very well done!

HITtv: Mtv
Kondak: Kodak

The ones I didnt base off of:

Javis Shoes
Jetstar Corp
Planet Love
Staunton Square MegaStore

If you ever design a condo tower, I'll give you a cool name. I think a name is very important. The more eye-catching the name, the more important the building can be.

Either that, or just use the real names.

How on earth do you get these textures? And how do you put them on your buildings?

I get them from windows live local, Photoshop is a huge help, straightening the textures for sketchup. Then just uploading them to sketchup.

how long did it take you to master sketch up? i still suck ass and ive been on it for like a month now...

I dont remember, I posted Staunton back in June, so I guess I just learned along the way.

Huge Update: I completly redid the skyline, moved every building to a new spot. Now the city has a more spread out skyline, unlike one huge cluster of buildings that looks like some mountian :yuck: I've also added some more medium sized buildings to balence out the skyline.

Ok Not only a new skyline, but a whole new layout is in the works. I'm getting Oceanside a complete facelift. I'm putting oceanside on LA's layout, since I'm too lazy and unskilled to make a realalistic city layout. I'm changing a few roads here and there but Oceanside will mostly be on LA's footprint.

Seriously, mate... Patience... Hell, Google for textures. All you need to do is just manipulate photos of real buildings or just make originals from the ground up.

hey i dont understand that crap could you tell me in english

:brickwall:

Turn on your computer.

Open your web browser. This is most likely Internet Explorer. It may go by a different name, but take some time to find it.

Go to Google.

That's http://www.google.com .

Click on the 'images' tab at http://www.google.com .

Type 'Building' into the query (that's the empty rectangle witht he flashing line).

Click 'Search.'

You will find multiple images to select.

Let's pick this one.

http://www.ihs.nl/photogallery/Building/images/IHS%20Building%202.jpg

Using your photo editing program, select out one face of the building, preferably the side whom says 'IHS.'

Copy this selection of the building.

Paste the copied selection into a new file whose edges just fit the edges of your selection.

Adjust the corners of your selection to fill the canvas.

Save this file in .jpg format.

If you don't understand this much, we've got a problem, and YOU're going to have to do some work on YOUR own to figure out how to do this. It's really quite simple.

if there is a fort gonzalez...does that mean any latin influence in the city? if so...maybe try and add a bit of a latin influence in your city streets and what not...

Looking great there Pat! Yeah, it's a real relief to get any big breaks to work on this stuff.

I really can only suggest adding a greater quantity of greenspace, something which Staunton really lacks. (not that I'm critical of Staunton or any such blasphemy)

^After seeing your new city Oceanside sure needs a nice big park! I was making a huge park across the river for Staunton, also there is a central park themed distirct with a nice sized park.

My Computer Crashed

Oceanside is Dead
New York City 2001 is Dead
Staunton has been reverted to Staunton 2.0

I'm going through a VERY tough time in my life, school, friends, family, ME, all in one week, on top of all that My computer crashes

I suggest everyone backs up their cities SOON, before the same tragety happens to YOU!

Yep, it's still here. I knew it was at the bottom of the list somewhere. Unfortunately the same can't be said about Sun City. :(
