View Full Version : So when Emir Kusturica dreamed of his own city..

Any proud, self-respecting European citizen must have probably heard of Emir Kusturica, a celebrated Serbian film director who won two Palme d'Or's (so far) for his films, and who was head of the jury at Cannes film festival last year.

He got so sick of the whole political situation in the Balkans, he decided to start buildinging his own "fotress of solitude".

Here's how far he's gotten - its called "Mecavnik" but most call it "Drvengrad" (Wooden town), close to city of Uzice in western Serbia. He won the Philippe Rotthier European Architecture Award for this project on Mt. Zlatibor in 2005. The prize is awarded every three years by the Brussels Foundation for Architecture and is one of the most prestigious Belgian and European awards in this field.

never heard of this place, but judging from the pics I guess it has already become a tourist-trap.

I see tracksuits are now de rigeur in Serbia - the new black. The country must have made some progress.... ;)

Yeah, Diego Armando Maradona was there, since Kusturica is making a movie with him in it...

Hey, we'd gladly export some of our purple/pink (made in Bulgaria) tracksuits to England, since apparently thats where there's a much more pressing need for them:D

Don't really see the relation between your comment and the link. Does Paul Robinson need a purple tracksuit?

Don't really see the relation between your comment and the link. Does Paul Robinson need a purple tracksuit?Everyone needs one - especially in Serbia where demand for purple/pink tracksuits amongst the fashionable urban rich has gone through the roof! The pavements and hip cafe terraces of Belgrade are positively thronged with them! :)

Have you got your purple/pink tracksuit yet?

I heard that people from Serbia like to tuck their jacket in while people from Srpska are vehemently opposed to that.

And while most European ski resorts are having trouble with snow....yesterday, Kusturica opened within his little city a new ski facility "Iver", consisting of three tracks (total lenght - 4 kilometers) at 1.500 meters above sea level and a new lift of 1.100 meters in length, set up by a Swiss company.

Obviously, he was the first to use it...
