View Full Version : THE "City of Fountains"...

KCgridlock
Aug 22, 2006, 2:30 AM
Well, I thought I would post a fountain thread, I have not done that in a while. Sometimes I forget just how much fountains are a part of our lives here. I still have many more fountains in KC to photograph and we have some new big ones that will be coming online downtown in the next few years so I think we can still proudly say we are the "city of fountains".

enjoy...

Nice shots! I was just in KC over the weekend, I hadn't been for a while. I was happy to see the progress the city has made over the past several years in terms of redevelopment in its urban neighborhoods(of which there are more than most people probably think). There are really some nice emerging urban niches.

Great eye as usual Grid. There are a couple hundred public fountains and even more private fountains. It's pretty much a standard now that most any public/private project includes a fountain.

This site tracks over 200 but apparently hasn't been updated since 2002...
http://www.kcfountains.org/events/index.html

KC has had a hokey claim that it has the second most number of fountains in world, next to Rome - as if all were counted. It's been said unchallenged since at least the 1940s and the unverified claim probably promoted a post-reality as KC is likely now first (in working fountains) now that adding a fountain is a presumed defacto standard of most projects.

BTW, you missed one of my favorites. "The boy and frog" fountain.

Over on kcskyscrapers.com, someone posted KC's newest one. But that may only last a week...

The fountain was sculpted by hand, and consists of three tiers composed of over 21 tons of concrete and steel. Thirteen statues, which shoot water into the top tier, are a part of the fountain. The water from the top tier flows at a rate of 67,500 gallons per hour.

Included in the fountain is a light-emitting diode, which allows the fountain to display over one million light and color combinations. It is also one of the first fountains in the world lit entirely with LED lights.

Not a good pic.. Needs Grid's eye.

Are all these fountains privately funded? It would seem like a waste of tax dollars if the city had to pay for a lot of those. I mean, I don't mean to be a troll, the fountains do spruce up the town, but the one in the middle of the freeway looks like it might be on state property and come on, why do you need a fountain in the middle of the freeway?

Does the fountain trend extend into Kansas City, Kansas?

I have to agree with you. Just like having a garden-it is just not complete without moving water, and the sound of moving water. Nothing is so nice and refreshing as water gurgling and splashing about. Must add greatly to urban living and working there. Great stuff in Kansas City.

It is sort of city wide Japanese garden KC style. Where I work, there are a half dozen sets of large fountains within a couple blocks. Where I live, there are at least a couple dozen in a few blocks. (I live <block from the Nichols fountain above). Laying down on a bench, zoning out to the flow of larger fountains/falls, allowing me bones and muscles to melt under the sun... Serenity Now.

I never knew Kansas city had so many fountains. Is KC known for fountains?
KCMO claims to have more fountains than any city in the world. Including a water feature in new construction is a gimme in KC.

http://photos.imageevent.com/kcphotos/kcfountains/large/IMG_7654_sized.jpg

Now that's what I'm talkin' about!

The statue fountain in the center of Meyer Circle is several hundred years old (imported from Italy in the 1920's, I think). It's been hit & restored more than once, so Meyer Circle has been "beefed up" and the fountain pool was enlarged with the ring of water jets added then. I remember driving by it one morning & seeing a tricycle stuck waaay up at the top.

Some are municipal fountains, like you would find in any city, and some are privately funded. Some are memorial fountains, some are donated by foundations or individuals, etc. It's just that in KC, fountains are like doors...you don't build a building without at least one.

The fountain in the aerial is in the center of Ward Parkway. It's not a freeway, and you'll get busted if you speed (I did).
