Those aren't balconies or open windows! Are they just there to prevent the heat from entering the building? Are they solar panels?

I'm talking about the bottom half of the building. Where the offices are and the windows are covered by some black shades or something.

I think they're there to reduce heat gain. I also doubt they're solar panels, otherwise we would have known by now.

As glamorous as the Burj is, the Index has to be my favorite building to go up in Dubai. It's massive. It's brutal. It's unforgivingly geometric.
This thing is everything a massively tall building should be. Barely over 1000 ft tall, yet from this angle it looks 1500 ft tall. Hands down, my fav.

Ahh... the most bad-ass building of the last 30 years nears completion.

What are the chances that units in this building get sold for fire-sale prices? I might pick one up if the price was right... if Dubai is as overbuilt as I keep hearing, then prices should be falling.

Ordo_

Its a shame the materials weren't a bit more mature. They seem plasticy, giving the building an unfortunate density that really obscures the finer points of its design.

Aleks
Nov 5, 2009, 5:39 AM
Agreed, this is one of those buildings where people are praising it over the design and forget about quality. The siding does looks plasticky and the glass isn't as good of a quality as it could've been.

Also, are those large platforms on the sides community balconies? If they're just there for support and people aren't allowed on them then I think it's a waste of materials. Why didn't they just fill these gaps anyways? I feel like more square footage could've been added and more views would've been offered.

Pizzuti

This building has a 1960s feel for me, and looks vaguely industrial.

If I found a miniature version of this building on the living room floor, I'd be trying to figure out which appliance it fell out of. Could it be some kind of air filter from the vacuum? A CPU? "Who tore the cover off of the remote!"

My main beef with it is that I dislike surfaces without windows, no matter where they appear. The fanning portions on either side of the tower are too plain.

The overall shape, though, is nice. And what I definitely can say for it is that it is an excellent contrast to all the other buildings in Dubai, giving the skyline some diversity. Whoever dislikes most of the architecture in Dubai will be a fan of this one.

That's the exact reason why I like this one so much, although I don't dislike the rest of Dubai's towers.

The bulk and massing of the Index are just so different than the pencil towers lining SZR which all have similar floorplates and only really differ in height. You get that same effect in the marina (Why do the planners encourage such monotony?) They need an Index up there.

Skies are like this about 6 months out of the year , during spring-winter time ..

we do have those odd days during the hight of summer when we get a thunder shower that clears things up for a day or two .... but in a country with so much sand around and high humidity , brown skies (more like yellow skies) are not unusual

This one really adds a taste of diversity to the skyline, something Dubai desperately needs more of. I’ve been a fan of this one since day one, and to see it nearing the end of its construction is sort of bittersweet; this was a fun one to see rise. Overall I’m quite satisfied with the finished product.

Some news about the hard hit company behind this tower selling some assets so it can complete its projects.

http://www.business24-7.ae/Articles/2010/1/Pages/UPearns15returns.aspx

Union Properties made a 15 per cent profit on the sales of two properties for Dh150 million as it plans to offload its “old” assets, the company’s Chairman told Emirates Business.

“We have made Dh150m on the sale of two assets to local investors, reporting a profit of 15 per cent. The price we got was higher than our evaluation despite a slowdown in the market,” Khalid bin Kalban said.

It will make an official announcement next week. Kalban said the company does not plan to sell its new assets, but was concentrating on disposing off its small assets. “There is a lot of demand for our old assets and we will put more for sale.” He said the sale proceeds will be used to fund ongoing projects, with focus on completing Limestone House and Index Tower in DIFC and MotorCity project.

and yet it might tottaly trick you from the side if you are looking straight at the wall.

and its a rather classical design yes but i still love it. And i came to think that it shares much of the propotions whit the rockefeller centre in New York or the Ce building as it is also called

Could this building be considered semi brutalist in nature?

Eh... not really. The defining aspect of brutalism was the experimentation with concrete, in terms of how architects could control its formation to produce different forms, shapes, textures and effects. Because architects of the period had faith that concrete was capable of a wide range of effects, they believed they could use it everywhere with different manifestations.

The simplicity of this idea appealed to architects greatly - still does. In fact, the best buildings of the brutalist era, in my mind, are the ones that kept the use of other materials to a minimum, instead of complicating things through the use of natural materials like brick, wood, or stone.

This building doesn't seem inventive with the use of concrete at all. Foster just poured a bunch of smooth concrete walls 86 stories high, and then filled in with dark glass and sun shading devices.

if the concrete columns were different colors/materials it would look awesome! and if the side curtainwalls were sloped rather than straight up, and there were atriums on those platforms that stick out of the sides with windows that open/close for natural ventilation it'd truly be one of the best dubai buildings.

sadly, that's not the case...

But when I look at it my eye is slowly rises to the top expecting something more to happen and it just leaves me wanting more. I like the Mass Effect reference though (Nerd Alert). That makes it kinda cool when I observe it from that train of thought.
