I was wondering how this was coming. First new high-rise up there in a while. Anyone know the official height in feet?

What an innovative technology, yet what a bland design.

I've totally found the renderings uninspiring some days, but I really think it's going to turn out pretty cool based on the plan views.

Thanks for the update 1ajs.

Please continue to update us with pictuers. Weekly or bi weekly at least.
Here in Calgary, we are abooming like nuts. YOu guys wouldn't believe the amount of stuff going on in cowtown.

Im sure a bunch of you guys at the Peg has heard about what is happening to Calgary these days with their office market. That and the stampede!

Cowtown has a bunch going on right now and I am glad we aren't the only ones along with Toronto and Vancouver getting all this. Great job for your city to get such a sustainable and clean high rise tower.

I will keep checking every few days and look forward to seeing this be added to your skyline.

Oh ya, is it true that Winnipeg is the Slurpee Capital of Canada? I duno about that.... :)

Nice pictures!
Is that a poster of a rendering of the building in that first shot of the latest update? If so could you get a pict of it and post?
The rendering at the front of this thread is not the best angle so I would like to get a better look at this thing.

Other questions, who are the architects for this project?
Is there a underground parkade included?

Spocket
Aug 14, 2006, 3:52 AM
^I can't remember who designed the building but if you follow the links provided at the top, I'm pretty sure they'll have all the FAQ's answered.
The rendering you see on the board in the pictures is one that can be found by following the links too.

Just in case I missed something though, just Google Manitoba Hydro and everything we can provide you with can be found there.

I'm not sure if they mention anything about parking on the site although they probably do. If I'm not mistaken, there's only one underground level of parking. It's not because they wouldn't need it obviously but I seem to recall that the idea was to encourage people to use public transit. In theory, not providing any parking at the site will make public transit that much more attractive to those who otherwise are on the fence about it. Don't know if it will work or if I even remembered the parking details properly.

Biff
Aug 14, 2006, 3:18 PM
^ There was two levels of underground parkade planned but the lower level became too costly to build due to the fact there is an underground stream running through the site. They looked at using sump pits to keep the water out but the volume was too great for the cost benefit of the parkade.

I wish they had gone for a design that would have made it the tallest in Winnipeg. It's been a while since a fair sized building went up there and it would have been great to have a new tallest in the old Peg.

At least you don't have to worry about casting shadows on the fish in the Bow. Apparantly they would have all commmitted suicide if a building dared to cast a shadow on the Bow.

^Actually, while not the tallest, this is the largest office building in Winnipeg.

I love to watch a concept on paper turn into steel, concrete and glass, and you're getting some amazing photos.

If I had to pick favorites, they would probably be these two; they really caught my attention:

so i walked by this bad boy tonight on graham and it looks like it's starting to actually tower over some of the surrounding buildings as it reaches it's 5th floor as the first two floors have really high ceilings. this is gonna be fun to watch over the next few months :) can't wait!!

Nice Pictures!

A couple of weeks ago, I found an article in the Winnipeg Free Pree about how if they built a two level underground parkade that it would risked being flooded from the groundwater level being so high. Manitoba Hydro didn't want to take the risk.

theres a layer of salt water between the bed rock and the clay... witch is not all that far down in the downtown... and you are right.

I got this idea from what some people have of Burj Dubai.

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/9332/bheadmbhconheightchartkb7.jpg

Red is what floor they built it up to so far.

It's a quick job, but does it. I beleive its at the fifth floor, with construction
starting on the sixth.

While not an outstanding project on worldwide scale, it definitely receives some of the best and most interesting photo coverage here on SSP. Congratulations guys for showcasing your city's local development in such a way, making it known to this worldwide community. And congrats to winnipeg on a rising addition to its skyline.

By the way, are there any renders in context of the city's skyline?

Interesting. I thought the tour guide said that fritted glass was going to be used on the south side. But it appears to be on the east in that photo. Although, he did say they were still "discussing" it. Maybe something has changed.
