Staunton I didnt Forget about you!

I've added many waterfront buildings, most of them from the 20's and 30's.
http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/5660/ghjde3.jpg

This picture shows one of the biggest differences between Staunton and Oceanside: 1920's and 1930's buildings! Staunton has a huge amount of these buildings resulting in a huge dense skyline. Oceanside dose not have these buildings. Only small lowrises built in the 1920's and 30's. Which results in Oceanside's sparse skyline.

Oceanside might be nicer, greener, and more open.

But you wont find this much density, crime, and corruption in Oceanside. Staunton is still a much more intresting city.

The Sun sets on Staunton as another day ends.

Staunton isnt dead, I'll restart sooner or later, just look at it! Staunton needs more love :)

I still like Staunton more than Oceanside, I just needed a break. Staunton has more story to it, it has a far denser skyline, and I love its depressing feeling. You guys really like Oceanside better than Staunton?

Well, it's sad to see Staunton done, but it was definately a work of achievement.

Patrick, you should be proud of your accomplishment (not saying you aren't), as you have truly inspired many to creat their own cities. If it weren't for Staunton, all of the cities on this forum done by Sketchup would probably be only in our heads at most, because we wouldn't have the thought or inspiration to do it on Sketchup.

Bravo!!

I had to do it again, the vision of Staunton.

Everytime I think of Staunton I see a huge grass field, in the sunset, with the Skyline in the background. Even though the city, (itself, not the skyline) sucks, it still has its moments...

Its no update, but I made a bigger version of this Vision, I've already posted a smaller version a few posts above.

Take me here :)

Its been about a month since an actual update. The Fort Staunton Memorial Park is defantly staying. Although it is in the spot of the Original Jefferson Heights Towers, which I will move somewhere else in the area:

You Remember those right?

Well anyways, I put a new city block north of the park. Mainly cosisting of an apartment complex and a few older buildings.

As for Oceanside, its taking a break. As in I cant come up with anything new, while I now have many new ideas for Staunton.

Yeah I know, Staunton Version 3.0.

- New Layout
- New Skyline

The layout will kinda be traced over lower manhattan but with many changes. The new layout isnt as simmetrical as the old one. There are many more diagonal roads, leading to a more diverse East Coast styled skyline.

Oh yeah, something bad's gonna happen soon. Crime related, Staunton has had it good for a little too long now.

Patrick
Nov 30, 2006, 6:49 AM
^Um yeah? Staunton is fictional so shouldnt it have a ficitonal past? But if you mean when I change the versions the city's main history stays the same, like the Worldwide Financial Crisis, which we havent heard much about lately. :)

Ok Ok, we are back to Staunton 2.5.

Although Staunton 3.0 had a better skyline, the city became jumbled up, the distructs where split apart and it just didnt feel like Staunton Anymore. The city just felt like one big district. Each building needs to go in a certian district.

Oh and Whats your favorite building?
I'm really curious :)

Heres a small montage of Staunton's architecture, I promise more skyline shots soon!

Staunton 2.0 - Stopped When Staunton upgraded to Photo-Textures
Staunton 2.5 - Current Version

Staunton 2.5
http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/4033/ghjhx5.jpg

As you can see the Peninsula basicly blew up. Skyscrapers arent on the water anymore. The City now has more space and is more realalistic. If you look closely you'll see some large buildings didnt make it to 2.5. But this process is very slow there is still about 50% of the city I still need to add, imagine when thats done! :)

Hey, loving the overview shots, it's very interesting to see how you've grown the city over time.
How are you capturing/saving your screenshots? Some of them seem to be very low resolution (especially the couple of shots you posteds yesterday), but I'd love to see them a bit clearer. I guess the textures probably contribute to that, but those shots seem considerably less clear in comparison to your most recent screens.

I like that you're breaking up the grid a bit in the Upper Northeast.
I'm liking the very tall glassy 'scraper a few blocks away from your tallest.
It'd be interesting to see some historical buildings (as in, 19th century) if it fits in with Staunton's history. Civic buildings (churches, courthouses, libraries etc) seem to be largely absent too, it'd be great to see some of them.

it depends on what exactly happened. If you (or someone you know) have the knowhow, my first instinct (if you're sure it's not gonna start in its current state) would be to remove the Hard Drive, stick it into another computer (without booting windows from the broken HDD), and see if windows can open it up.

SD_Phil
Dec 18, 2006, 9:42 PM
I know this won't make the loss of data feel any better but if/when you go back to working on staunton again you could always write this into its history. A great earthquake/tsunami/flood/terrorist attack etc happened on such and such date and leveled a good chunk of the city. Build memorials and new ultramodern designs etc etc. Could work in your creative favor. Silver lining?

Patrick
Dec 21, 2006, 1:51 AM
^Thanks for the tip!

I did rewrite the city's history, but the missing parts will just have to be rebuilt.

Staunton will be in present time, but the Twin Towers still exist. On September 11th 2001, the Stock Market Crashed (no more Worldwide Financial Crisis) as the city boomed with business in the 90's, it fell apart. Now the World is recovering from a huge depression, but Staunton is still way behind from recovering. After the depression, crime levels soared, suicide rates skyrocketed, the population dropped. Oh my.

Patrick

Sadly Gone

- Jefferson Slums
- South Staunton
- Galprises Arena
- New Staunton Square
- The Central Park Themed District
- Innercity Tunnel
- The Freeway System (Barley Begun)
- All New Building Improvments (More Detail Etc)
- Fort Staunton Memorial Park

Everything Else is still there, I guess :P

Ok, finally a real update.

Staunton 3.0
For Starters, that whole "Modern Waterfront" Thing is gone. Remember how I replaced all those small buildings with huge office buildings? After looking at Staunton 2.0, the skyline seems better without them.

So, Staunton 3.0 Includes
- Textured roofs
- Traffic covered roads
- Way more detailed buildings

Finally on to the screenshots

Truly Urban Shot, 1930's Buildings now actually look like 1930's buildings :P
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/5984/gookc4.jpg

ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH
Originally, there was a spiretopped church in Staunton 2.5, the first of many. Although, I never showed it. The old St. Nicholas was squeezed in the middle of several highrises. The New St. Nicholas Church is now on a corner, with room for a cemetary. The Church is unfortunantly in one of the busiest intersections of Staunton. Behind the church is the massive Stock Exchange, across the street, Galprises World Headquarters. But the church is a city landmark, and is one of the cities oldest buildings still standing.
http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/6870/goozv4.jpg

STAUNTON STOCK EXCHANGE
Known as the birthplace of the 2001 Ecenomic Depression! Completed in 1995 and 421 Feet High. An addition was added across the street in 1998. The building takes up about 75% of the city block. Original plans called for the building to take up the whole block. Behind the building is St. Nicholas Church and a few office buildings. The Stock Exchange is actually based off a building from GTA III, with a simular design.
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/9027/gooms8.jpg

The Skyline So Far, 715 S. Phantom Ave Dominating the skyline, but is usually overshadowed by the Galprises World Headquarters Tower. (Just in case you dont know Galviston Enterprises sometimes calls themselves Galprises, since the name is so long, for example Galprises Arena)

I love Shnief Towers (closest tower) Its pronouned, basicly the way its spelled. Shnief Towers replaced The Penthouse, (AlpineSquare was replaced but with an updated version) Shnief Towers, built by Billionare Claude Shnief in 1991, at the beggining of the 90's Ecenomic Boom. The tower has a few balconies, (for single units or several units, depending on size) on top of most of its setbacks. I'll show more of this tower soon :)

Great stuff Pat! I'm still wondering where you get all those textures from... that's what is holding back my progress (other than being lazy).

I get them from Windows Live Local Birds Eye views, all of the textures are actually from New York City and Jersey City, to give Staunton the New Jersey feeling.

Found a new photoshop trick, now the city really dose look like its around sunset. :)
http://img454.imageshack.us/img454/9898/ghjmj3rs3.jpg

I see you are adopting a more open look in that regard

Yeah, Staunton Square is now getting a way more open look. Although Staunton is getting a more clustered look. The roads in 2.5 were too large, smaller the roads, the better the skyline.

Lets take a look at Staunton then and now.

Staunton Financial Core
The tall towers basicly just got more detailed
http://img477.imageshack.us/img477/4819/ghjmj3ri8.jpg

Lexington & Gleason
At first a park, but the area has such high land value, that a commercial building would be more fitting. But since this IS Staunton, something more Staunton-like (and cooler) should be in its spot. At first in 2.5, the site was an abandoned site, with trees and grass. Now its the ruins of a building, who fell victum to the riots of the 2001 Ecenomic Crisis. There are no plans for the site, so far.
http://img305.imageshack.us/img305/1451/ghjmj3il4.jpg

Sebastian & Lexington
Due to 2.5's layout, there was now more extra rooms for the building's lots, even after they were scaled. The Stock Exchange and 715 Phantom Ave had plenty of space. In 2.5 a spire topped church (first church in Staunton) stood behind the Stock Exchange and squezed between several buildings. Since that was wiped out, a new, more realalistic church was built, this time on the corner and a cemetary. Several new buildings were added behind 715 Phantom Ave, now more detailed in 3.0.

Trenton Towers/Upper Northeast Side Towers
1.0 - Triangle Condominiums/"That Black Box"/The Penthouse, Trenton District
1.5 - AlpinePlaza South/720 North Phantom Avenue/The Penthouse, Upper Northeast Side
2.5 - AlpineSquare/720 North Phantom Avenue/The Penthouse, Upper Northeast Side
3.0 - The Alpine/Alpine Square (recreational)/Shnief Towers, Upper Northeast Side
These Three Towers have been with Staunton since the first week. Although, over time, their design has gotten more and more complex. From 1.0 to 2.5 the buildings changed, but kept traces of their original design. In 3.0, 720 North Phantom had been replaced with a Plaza. The Alpine, still is a modern glass box, but now with a private mansion on top. Shnief Towers has now been completly redone, and has a hell of a lot more detail. For example it now has huge balconies on top of most of its setbacks.

Thanks! But this thread gets so many page views, but only gets like 2 replys at a time :( Please if you visit this thread, please leave a comment :)

Heres another thing I tried in photoshop. Real Pictures + Staunton. Here are some early experimental shots.

Of course this is just an experiment. But the results seem pretty good :)

Oh and a bonus shot, this pic has very little perspective, so it brings out the skyline more. You can see just how diverse and dense the skyline is.

God it looks like Metropolis with Gotham

Another extra shot, Staunton Square, which is taking a painfully long time to redo.

It certainly is an insane city you've got going here.
Fantastic job on the photoshopping, very authentic.
I'm loving Staunton Square, the traffic textures help bring a little life to the city, and there's a hell of a lot of detail in a very small area.

Thanks! Aaah 2007 is already looking to be a great year. Winter Break is great, after a sucky year like 2006.

So I manage to squeeze in time for Staunton in the mornings and late at night. Staunton Square is taking very long to redo, since in Staunton 1.0 had the old crossroad version of Staunton Square. After finally finishing Staunton Square 2.5, my computer crashes. Staunton Square needs a lot of creativity, you cant have too many rip-offs like JC Summit, or too many bland glass buildings.

Basic Overview, Staunton on a hot summer day. Even though it looks like it from here, Staunton Square is STILL not done :P

Beautiful as ever, Patrick.
Here's a question for you though - how much texture repetition is there in Staunton?
'cos I'm in the process of texturing Arcadia right now, and I have a real shortage of textures. I've been trying to make it so 2 buildings with the same texture aren't too close to each other, but that's a difficult task - Anywy, I didn't notice much repetition of textures at all, and wondered around how many textures you were using for the bulk of the buildings in Staunton?
Again, very nice work, look forward to more updates.

Don't hate me for saying this, but I'm glad the old Staunton was lost!

I like this one 10 times better. The detailing is so much more impressive.

The city has definetly come along very nice. A suggestion I would make thought is to put up a few more glassy modernistic buildings. Buildings like BOFA, Ernst & Young, the Reuters Building. Try to break it up a little. I know you have your hands full with Staunton Square, believe me I'm not downing your city, but as you always say: leave suggestions and comments.

I really have to say though your city is very balanced. Usually I wouldn't like your cities tallest (that big, bulky black box), but in this case it pulls the city together. Nothing else would have the same effect.

Overall outstanding job

I dont really get your first question, although Staunton Has 45 Building Textures. Counting Blank Walls, Detals etc.

I'm kinda glad too :) Although, there is a little too much detail, so Staunton can run slow sometimes. To put it in perspective, The whole model of Staunton 1.0, was 6.30MB, while Staunton 3.0 is 9.53MB, which only so far has about 50% - 75% of the whole city.

A suggestion I would make thought is to put up a few more glassy modernistic buildings. Buildings like BOFA, Ernst & Young, the Reuters Building. Try to break it up a little.

Thanks for the suggestion! But heres the problem, Staunton is in New Jersey, and based off of New York. If you look at New York City, and many other east coast cities, you will se a lot of 1920's-30's buildings, along with a lot of 60's and 70's buildings. If Staunton was a Californian City, you'd see a lot more modern/post-modern buildings.

Thanks! To do this, usually, every big boxy building is neighbored by a smaller, more elagant building, usually with a slanted or setback top.

This picture shows it, notice how the 3 tallest flat topped buildings are next to a slanted top or setback top tower.

Heres another shot, from this angle the skyline forms 2 main clusters: Upper Northeast Side & Financial District, and Staunton Square & Torrington.

Nice! :)

Your city's tallest has the same effect to the skyline
as the old WTC had to New York city's
skyline!

Maybe a difficult question, but how many
highrises(12 floors+) is there
in Staunton right now?

Patrick: that was exactly what I wanted to hear. I was just concerned, because Arcadia only has about 20 - 25 unique building textures (plus a bunch of concrete textures for roofs), and I was worried that the finished product would look too repetetive, texture wise. But you've put my mind to rest.

Thanks, yes The Galprises Tower is very Ionic. I try to make it as visible as possible, (no huge buildings in the way from major viewpoints)

Wow thats a toughie, I'll just estimate on weather the building is 12 Stories or not. I'll make a count soon.

Its Back!
The Fort Staunton Memorial Bridge, now better than ever. I found a new trick with the Bridge Wires, plus the bridge is more elegant and Art Deco Styled. (Boat is a 3D Warehouse Component)
http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/5198/ghjmj3qa2.jpg

I'm not too sure with its new color, though. A little to bright. What do you guys think, back to blue? keep the color? or a new color?
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/7564/ghjmj3aa8.jpg

Along with the return of the Fort Staunton Memorial Bridge (renamed from the plain old Staunton Harbor Bridge) is West Staunton, which is finally reborn. (In 2.5 I went East) West Staunton, which has Atlantis Square, Kennedy Heights, Callahan Park City, and Callahan Square. So far, Atlantis Square and a few more blocks of Kennedy Heights currently exist.
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/3057/ghjmj3sp2.jpg

And an Extra.

Staunton Square Towers
From left to right: Callahan Communications, Cappe Plaza Hotel, Staunton Square Tower, and Cosmopolitan Records. The Staunton Square Tower shortly lived a few days before Staunton 2.5 was lost. It now has been recreated. Calahann Communications, has been around since Staunton 1.5. Cappe Plaza Hotel is new and the Cosmopolitan Records Tower is a new design (based off of One Astor Plaza)

Of course, all these towers have been modeld off or based off of a New York Building.

Callahan Communications - Cancelled Rockefellar Center West
Cappe Plaza Hotel - Crowne Plaza Hotel
Staunton Square Tower - Times Square Tower
Cosmopolitan Records Tower - One Astor Place

Bridge is looking very nice, but I agree that a colour tweak wouldn't go astray. I wouldn't necessarily say go back to blue, but a dark grey colour wouldn't go astray, I reckon. Liking the new buildings, especially the Staunton Square tower there.

I say just change the colour of the cables to some metal texture.

Nice new buildings BTW!

Jan 7, 2007, 11:15 PM
Great job Patrick as always. I suggest for the brige, to make the towers brick and the cables a darker color. I say make the towers brick because I know you want that NY/NJ city feeling, so by making the towers brick, the bridge would resemble the Brooklyn Bridge. Atleast give it a try, I'm sure it would blend in well.

I'm new here (first post) but I just have to say, Staunton is quite amazing! I so want to make a fantasy city after reading this whole thread.

I had an idea that probably seems to unrealistic to actually put into Staunton, but I'll say it anyways: Ever thought about adding a monorail system or some other type of elevated train system? It could weave around and sometimes even through the buildings.

Just an idea though. Keep on doing what you do!
