So its been a month since I actually updated. Well I have redone Galcorp Plaza and I'm currently improving Staunton's layout, many messed up roads, some ending abruptly and unrealistically.

http://i40.tinypic.com/2j4ribp.jpg

http://i43.tinypic.com/30hy901.jpg

http://i44.tinypic.com/t9a5x2.jpg

1 Galcorp Plaza: completed 1976, 86 stories. Plans called for a 105 story tower which would have been the 4th tallest building in the world at the time, plans where later revised once more land was bought. Houses several important communications antennas atop the office penthouse of Alexander Galviston III. Tallest building in Staunton, 3rd in the country, headquarters for Staunton based Galviston Enterprises, 1169 feet high.
2 Galcorp Plaza: completed 1975, 56 stories. Originally planned as a twin tower but to save money during the massive urban renewal of Westly Avenue it was only constructed 2/3rds of the original height. Technically it was built to accommodate 28 more floors, so if needed the tower will expand (but thats far in the future, and Staunton is the land where time stands still! ;) ) 779 feet.
3 Galcorp Plaza: completed 1979, 28 stories. Site was just a large parking lot for the city until underground parking space was finished for the complex. Site was just going to be a plaza but was built instead of completing 2 Galcorp Plaza, 389 feet, 1/3 of 1 Galcorp Plaza's height.
Marlon Galcorp Plaza North: completed 1985, 33 floors. Hotel component, 4 stars, first few floors parking garage, 436 feet.
Marlon Galcorp Plaza South: completed 1984, 20 floors. Hotel component, 4 stars, first few floors parking garage, 253 feet, constructed considerably shorter than its sibling due to air rights for Saint Nicholas' Church next door.

Acctually, I like the whole GalCorp plaza now, It seems to be like the World Trade Center where you dont like it at first but you relize how big of a project it was and how much of a symbol it is to the City. Wanna know what would be suppa fly, a Skyscrapers.com World HQ

Great work Pat. Can't wait to see the 'new' Staunton. I really like Galcorp but for some reason I don't like the small buildings all around. It just looks very dense and repetitive. I get that that's kind of the point but something about it bothers me. I guess I really can't say what. It's just something. The main tower is fine though.

Patrick
Dec 24, 2008, 9:34 AM
Patrick, how large is your city's file. Mine is coming close to 40mb.

Staunton v5 was 37.4 MB
Staunton v4 was 52.4 MB

So guys I guess you've pretty much found out that I'm working on Staunton version 5. I hate to say it, I hate how I cant stay with one version, but as time goes on you can Imagine that I get more advanced, the older parts of the city become more and more crappy compared to the new ones.

BORING STUFF AHEAD!

So Staunton 5, I really hope I can stay with it, the future seems bright, in this version I made a semi-new plan, everything is totally clean, all the roads, crosswalks, and sidewalks are all measured the same, not like before. I went back to a grid style, but keeping some curves since this is a city founded in 1669 and needs some history. I'm taking more inspiration from Chicago and Boston, making it look less like a rip of New York City.

Midtown will still happen, a few blocks West of Downtown, when you look at the skyline from New Ganton there will be Downtown, a small dent for Callahan Village, the Train Station, New Ganton Bridge, then a second explosion of skyscrapers with Staunton Square.

Its not a total makeover, you'll still see much of the same, but the whole north side of Staunton (area torwards Jefferson) will be completly redone, as it now has a grid. The problem in Staunton 4 was that I just kept adding essential buildings like the Futures Exchange and Police Headquarters when I realized downtown had no room for them.

I mean, Staunton didnt even have a major Courthouse! We need a total neo-classical courthouse with pillars and steps. This is afterall, the city of justice.

http://i42.tinypic.com/29awie8.jpg

SO thats the new map. Westly Center will remain virtually the same, just better. The Museum of History will be moved somewhere else as I just plopped it on the waterfront there in the last version. The Plaza District is a small cluster that contains Galcorp Plaza and the Garden State Building, this is the high end part of the skyline with the most prominent skyscrapers of the skyline. The Civic Center, or Farley Square. South of United American Avenue will consist of City Hall, One Police Plaza, Staunton County Courthouse, and the Staunton Supreme Courthouse. north of United American Avenue will be a line of large boxes from the 60's - 70's. The Financial District will be home to all the exchanges and major final institutions, several major skyscrapers and art deco towers like the UIG and Lloyd Towers. Fort Staunton will be a redone section of the waterfont, think Boston, here you will see many historical buildings and the docks.

So in conclusion...

I need your help. Before I proceed with going on, is there anything Staunton needs? Anything major that every major city has that you dont see on the map?

AHHH!!! Frank Lloyd Wright! That's what it needs! An Opera House would be nice. What about a local news station? Or some studios like the ones in Good Morning America or the Rockefeller Center. A HUGE store like the Bon Marche [sad that it was bought by stupid Macy's] or Nordstroms? A 5th Avenue NY. styled street where all the rich and famous shop? An 1800's hotel where some well liked president or mayor was killed and is now a city landmark?

Well, the historical district looks a bit squashed, some of the blooks in that area look to small, and the jefferson bridge aproach is to low to have a road go under it in that location. other than that it's a good map.

City Hall!

Constructed in 1929 in demand for more space for civic office space for the rapidly expanding city. 675 feet to the gold leaf atop the building, 40 stories, the building houses Staunton City Hall, Mayor Green's 36th floor office, and is also the Staunton County Municipal Building. The beaux-arts building has been a city icon since its completion and is located right in the heart of downtown.

-Good call Patrick. When you feel your skill improves you should always do what you can to modify what you've made, otherwise like you said it'll look off.

-I like the grid, especially what you did with Galcorp Plaza. The new grid makes everything seem more practical and realistic.

-Hopefully we'll soon see Midtown though, I've been waiting for that since you first announced it.

This one is way better, just wait until it fills up Austin.

Patrick,
Your conclusions are very insightful. I always had mixed fillings toward Staunton. It IS the best city by far IMO and surely the one that inspires us all. But I never really liked the ground level of your previous versions, nor the rip off of Manhattan - and now you have adressed both.

The City Hall is excellent.

Other things Staunton needs is a huge convention center built in the late 90s with Singaporean influences; another older convention centeir; the ferry terminal downtown, and a new cruise terminal hopefully midtown.
Some small churches in the historic district among brick rowhouses and perhaps some walls of the fort could have been preservated on the park near the historic district.

I like the grid, especially what you did with Galcorp Plaza. The new grid makes everything seem more practical and realistic.

Thank you! One of the reasons I redid was because I remembered you missed older Staunton with its more denser, grid skyline, so I'm going back to the basics and bringing back a few older Staunton buildings.

Hopefully we'll soon see Midtown though, I've been waiting for that since you first announced it.

I know me too, I have so many ideas, I really really really miss Staunton Square, maybe instead of doing a whole lotta lowrises and working my way to Midtown, I can do most of downtown then skip to midtown and do the most important buildings first.

Patrick,

I'd love to show you guys more stuff, but Staunton v5 is still a baby and has alot of empty space, so obviously I wont show that hah, but I am very pleased with the results!

Staunton's line of Industrial and Pharmaceutical major company boxes. We've got One Allied American Plaza, Galviston Energy, Galviston Chemicals. This picture dosn't show much, all of these buildings now have cool little plazas and sculptures.

Youre sure right, it is filling in, love the gellar tower. I dont like the midway up certain tower shots for some reason, but thats just me. I also really like the Deco on the far right of the last shot, isnt it like *somenumber* Phantom Ave.?

Wow, I'm surprised you remember the name! Makes me glad, people actually read my posts instead of looking at the pics :haha: Yes its 715 Phantom Avenue, while I love Phantom Avenue, the avenue is long gone, it was then 715 United American Avenue (spin on Avenue of the Americans) Now its moved upfront, it was one of the very first buildings I ever modeled! Go back to page one and you'll see it! But I'm probably gonna come up with a new name for it now.

A typical winter in Staunton at Farley Square!

(R2L) Lloyd Tower, Stock Exchange Tower (someone help me, I still havent come up with a better name for this beauty), One Landmark Plaza (hate this name to, I want it to be something like NationsBank Plaza), RLBC Building (Rome London Banking Corporation)

Well this fourm is no longer dead, but god this thread is! :haha: But I can understand, we've seen all these buildings before, so its kinda boring to see these shots, but its to early to do street scenes since theres so much to be done. Soon you guys will start seeing some new skyscrapers, I've gotta design some fresh new ones!

Well anyways heres an overview, I'm so pleased on how realistic Staunton now looks from above. If you cant tell, Staunton now has Alleys, where all the crimes and drug dealing go down at night.

http://i41.tinypic.com/fa5z7a.jpg

I'm working on the Civic Center, City Hall needs improvements, One Police Plaza needs a redone, and I'm working on the Staunton Supreme Courthouse, which sure is a pain in the ass to do! I havent put much into the North side of Downtown after the Stock Exchange area, that will be the denser part of Downtown while the South, mostly done is fairly open and lowrise.

Is this a good or bad thing in your opinion? Unfortunately the skyline is less impressive and I am a bit dissapointed, but I do prefer the realism.

A block in downtown featuring the Bank of the Nation Building and One Calcom Plaza, headquarters to Callahan Communications. The building is mainly used for communications, security equipment, and office space on the lower floors. The structure itself is the only building in Downtown built to withstand a nuclear blast (it is rumored that all three of the Galcorp Towers are as well but its probably just a myth)

http://i44.tinypic.com/j586dt.jpg

RC&T Center

Completed in 1988, currently the sixth tallest building in Staunton and headquarters to RC&T Bank. With a distinct postmodern facade, art-deco styled massing, the building is highly prominent from the west and north, but due to its location across the street from One Galcorp Plaza it is practically invisible from the south and east. It serves as an anchor to the downtown skyline offsetting One Galcorp Plaza at 943 feet to the spire, 774 feet to the main roof, 56 stories high.

The building is largely based off of Two Hanover Square in Raleigh, NC and unintentionally resembles the GE Building in NYC.

http://i40.tinypic.com/2je70j5.jpg

Although the building is well over a year old, if you guys remember it was part of the MacFarland Center, I decided to ditch the complex and take the two main towers re-modify them and put them into the skyline.

And the NBC Tower in Chicago! Great job Pat! Your buildings look amazing as usual.

Very Chifley tower , sort of

Ah! I didnt see those! Good calls, I also see a resemblance to the 101 Hudson Street Building in Jersey City. Very odd I only recall basing it off of that building in Raleigh.

FINE, I surrender here is a pano, I hate giving skyline shots at this stage since the skyline is so underdeveloped but I think from this angle its alright. Keep in mind theres still some empty blocks downtown and the whole historical district should be built in front of the skyline, but none of the buildings will be above 20 floors or so.

That's a wonderful metropolis skyline! :worship: How tall is that Lloyd Building? It rules the skyline nicely, but I'd like to see it even taller and that way even more prominent - like a true king of Staunton.

Thank you! Lloyd is 980 feet tall, while it looks very prominent from that angle its the 3rd tallest building in the city (by roof height) 5th (by spire height)

Staunton Financial Center, spring is coming!

Oh, Lloyd's is the third tallest!? That shot fooled me. Anyways, looks great and I can't wait to see the skyline from other angles. I don't mean I want you to rush it, take you time and show it when you're ready, 'cause I know the result will be stunning. :slob: That last shot looks awesome, by the way. Very alive!

Amzing! i love that plaza with the yin yang symbol. Just great:tup: and its great that lloyd always seems to be in the the background of your shots. it just seems to loom over the city. Plus its a really well designed/textured building. Great job Patrick:tup:

besides the realistic look you have given the city an atmosphere.in the spring pic everything is bright and fresh even clean...maybe late spring......your earlier pic of a rainy day which i posted on before gave me a sence of impending gloom or storm....over all i think when you are bringing in weather and seasons n turn giving a sketchup up city an atmosphere........11 out of 10.........an unrivalled city.......you hav juat inspired me to give some life to my final renders ,putting life into them

It's been a month since I last updated, wow!!! 2009 is just flying by, I took a break from Staunton, worked on other projects non-sketchup related. Thanks to Austin I got the effort to make a new block and re-modify another, these you'll see in the second picture.

So Just checking in, I'm not dead, but I'm not technically back into Staunton, we'll see. In the meantime Enjoy these two quickly done crappy scenes, forgive me I'm very exhausted, it's still spring break :D

Awesome textures in the first shot, very realistic in the New England way. The yellowish color and sunset sky makes the 2nd picture really awesome. The second picture looks strikingly simialr to Chicago.
Is that a real name!? Robert F. Kennedy?! Whoah.
On thing I'd like to see is to try and get more of the buildings into the pictures, you always get just the middle, it's be cool if we could see the streetline and whatnot.

Not only Staunton looks extremely good, I also think that you have a very good eye for impressive shots. I really don't have any suggestions to better Staunton - maybe get outside the highrise district someday?

Is that a real name!? Robert F. Kennedy?! Whoah.

Yeah Robert F. Kennedy was JFK's brother who played a big part in the Civil Rights movement and also ran for president several years after JFK died, after winning California in the primaries he was assassinated in Los Angeles.

http://tbn0.google.com/hosted/images/c?q=25a2d639827547d2_landing

The other wing of the Convention Center is named after JFK, the one that appeared in that picture was named after RFK. The Expressway connecting the Staunton Bridge to the New Ganton Bridge will be called the John F. Kennedy Jr. Expressway (look him up Austin), and the medical center will still be named the Martin Luther King Jr. Medical Center like in Old Staunton. I have yet to find a place to named after my idol JACKIE O!

On thing I'd like to see is to try and get more of the buildings into the pictures, you always get just the middle, it's be cool if we could see the streetline and whatnot.

The problem is I don't like showing the streets because they make the city look dead since theres no action on them, I guess I'll try giving more shots with component people and cars on them.

Not only Staunton looks extremely good, I also think that you have a very good eye for impressive shots. I really don't have any suggestions to better Staunton - maybe get outside the highrise district someday?

Thank you! I wish I could do that but the area outside Downtown is greatly underdeveloped, but once I start building lowrise districts I'll be sure to show them.

OMG! That's amazing. You should make a Chinatown. It would add so much f'in realisticness-ness[?] to your city! And since Chinatowns usually have narrow streets, it would make the city easier to fill with 2D people!

That last shot is probably one of the best I've seen in this thread. Everything is realistic, nothing is missing. It's flawless! Koster looks pretty damn awesome and it adds more flavor to the city.

OMG AN AERIAL!?!?!?!?!

Yeah in New Staunton I now give the roofs more detail, leading to much more realistic aerial shots.

Holy crap!!! :worship: That is most likely the best aerial of a SU city I've ever seen! Those rooftops add a hell of a lot realism to this city (not to say it wasn't realistic before). This really makes me want to do a city like this - only I can't. :(
