That last shot was awesome. Although I don't think I like the textures on the building behind the Flatiron based tower.

Are you going to use this oppertunity to redesign the Bridge to jefferson?

Well the Jefferson Bridge (I kept calling it the Callahan Bridge only because Staunton is modeled off of Liberty City in GTA III and the Jefferson Bridge is modeled off of the Callahan Bridge from the game).

http://i30.tinypic.com/wk1el1.jpg

But instead of ripping it off blantly, I modeled it off of the Ben Franklin Bridge in Philadelphia.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/00/Benjamin_franklin_Bridge_from_1601_Market.jpg

This is the Jefferson Bridge from the last version of Staunton we all know.

http://i25.tinypic.com/2qnp5ir.jpg

So basically, the new Jefferson Bridge will be practically identical to the original Jefferson Bridge but will be much more detailed and overall look better.

But heres a problem, like the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges the Jefferson Bridge will have an ajecent bridge, the Staunton Bridge, now I havent come up with a design yet, but any ideas? The Staunton Bridge is an important link from Staunton to Jefferson so I must have a pre-40's design. So anyone have any suggestions, ideas for the Staunton Bridge?

Anyways...

I haven't updated in about 2 weeks!

Despite it being spring break I've been enjoying it rather than working on Staunton, but last late late night and late tonight I put together a long needed facelift for Staunton Island's frontmost blocks:

Rothenburg Center

Phase One
Planned in the 50's to revive Downtown Staunton, this was Staunton's World Trade Center up until the Galcorp Plaza was completed. The Project includes 3 ultra modern, ultra boxy, ultra boring office towers, despite their dullness they have become some of Staunton's finest real estate and have stayed far from vacant with their huge open floorplans and sweeping unobstructed views (well for towers I and II). Construction lasted 1960 - 1965.

Phase Two
Along with the 3 office towers would come one more office tower and two hotel towers. Supposibly supposed to start in 1966, construction was delayed due to investors pulling out for overbuilding. In 1976, after the success of the Rothenburg Center, Horton Hotels would manage two twin modern hotel towers (one larger than the other), a 3rd tower which was office, was constructed also, but with a simular facade to the hotel towers, it currently houses Federal Offices. Construction lasted 1977 - 1979

The Plaza/Skybridges

Rothenburg Center's towers I and II are connected by a huge public space called the Robert J. Rothenburg Plaza, with several 60's sculptures and modern landscaping. All 6 towers are connected via Skybridges/Plazas/Or Podiums.

I Rothenburg Center
- 634 Feet
- 53 Floors
- 1963
Flagship of the Rothenburg Center, the East-most Skyscraper on Staunton Island. Headquarters for Media Conglomorate, King Media.

II Rothenburg Center
- 563 Feet
- 46 Floors
- 1964
Headquarters for Whitney (The Whitney Company) which specializes in building gigantic jumbo-jets.

III Rothenburg Center
- 517 Feet
- 40 Floors
- 1965
Headquarters for the Dobbson Company (DOCO) one of the world's most sucessful pharmaceutical companies. III Rothenburg Center has a different design from its two brothers as it lacks the vertical striping the other two towers posess.

Horton Rothenburg Center North
- 424 Feet
- 36 Floors
- 1979
Hotel Component for the Rothenburg Center.

Horton Rothenburg Center South
- 380 Feet
- 30 Floors
- 1978
Hotel Component for the Rothenburg Center.

V Rothenburg Center
- 380 Feet
- 30 Floors
- 1978
Federal Office Building constructed with a simular design to the Horton Hotel Towers.

I'm sure you can figure out which building is which.

I like how you added those green "freeway" signs on the bridge looks very realistic

Yeah, the Jefferson bridge looks awesome. IDK why you would wanna change it.

For the Staunton Bridge you should make it a double decker bridge with subway rials in the first deck and roads for cars/pedestrians on the second. It's kind of hard to choose on the design but you can make it a suspension, or a double arch bridge made out of steel, or a combination of steel and stone.

treras93

WOW! Its all awesome but especially i like the horton buildings. plus the textures for all of them seem clearer than alot of your others so that a big plus! (if its even true, maybe its just me). also i like all the trees!

AWESOME! :worship:

Wrightguy0
Mar 23, 2008, 9:38 PM
Pat, I agree with aleks, try a double decker with subways on the lower level. The best example of this that I can think of is the Manhattan bridge, hey they're already ripping of the design in GTA IV so think of it as homage to the new Liberty City.

Can't wait to see all the new cool details on the Jefferson Bridge

Yes, I knew you'd like those towers! I love the buildings aligning the Avenue of the Americas, my favorites are either the XYZ Buildings or the Credit Lyonnais Building.

Yeah, the Jefferson bridge looks awesome. IDK why you would wanna change it.

I'm not going to change it! Just make a newer more detailed version, same towers same design: one decker with pedestrian walkways.

WOW! Its all awesome but especially like the horton buildings. plus the textures for all of them seem clearer than alot of your others so that a big plus! (if its even true, maybe its just me). also i like all the trees!

Yes! I used actual pictures textures on those instead of LiveLocal textures lke 80% of Staunton's buildings are textured from.

Thanks! Expect more of those!

hey they're already ripping of the design in GTA IV so think of it as homage to the new Liberty City.

I know! I was pretty dissapointed to see that! I loved original Liberty City in GTA III, I mean come on in GTA IV its not "based off of" but a virtual duplicate of New York City right down to the Statue of Liberty.

BUT the new Liberty City looks plain amazing.

Yup,I like Elfthompson the best. I LOVE postmodernism. Vandessel is great to. Coppers is my least favorite. its kinda glassy and bland on the backside, but the plazaside is neat.

Dac150
Mar 23, 2008, 11:34 PM
Vandessel for me. Well designed and innovative at that.

Aleks
Mar 23, 2008, 11:44 PM
Mine would have to be Coppers Financial Center. The colors match, the box look nice, and it's smooth but at the same time rough. I like big boxy towers too. Maybe I like it cause it reminds me of Penn Plaza, or Chase Bank Tower.

Wrightguy0
Mar 24, 2008, 1:15 AM
Coppers 100%, you may want to cut back on the glass though

Ducov

I love the new additions. I like the ELFThompson building best.

Are you still looking for some bridge ideas, 'cause I was messing around with some designs recently.

Here's a shitty little sketch with two:

http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/9121/imgvf7.th.jpg (http://img175.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imgvf7.jpg)

The first is essentially 3 Sydney harbor bridges stuck together, the other is a canter leaver type like the Forth bridge.

Just some thoughts.. what do you think?

Aleks
Mar 24, 2008, 1:29 AM
I was thinking about the second one you just posted but I couldn't think of any bridges I knew like that and I didn't know the name of the structural type.

But yeah, that one is the one I was thinking of and yeah I think it would look nice.

Ducov
Mar 24, 2008, 1:50 AM
Do you mean like this one? It's the Firth of forth bridge in Scotland.

:previous: you never see those types in city centers,so it would be unique. but, there kinda ugly IMO.

I thonk maybe another classic suspension bridge is in order,or maybe an undertruss.

Aleks
Mar 24, 2008, 4:34 AM
Yeah, like that one. But I saw one in Florida like that. Maybe a bridge like that painted a steel blue would look nice in Staunton. But it would look kind of weird. The George Washington Bridge would look nice.

Actually, it depends on where the bridge is. If it's near the tip of the city then make it a suspension, thin and tall, or think and short. If it's farther away from the tip of the city then make it big and bulgy, with lots of steel.

Peter
Mar 25, 2008, 2:57 AM
I think cantilever bridges are some of the most attractive bridges and a cantilever would look awesome in Staunton. Something along the lines of the beautiful Queensboro Bridge would fit PERFECTLY with Staunton! Plus, this is a kind of NYC based city, so why not base your next bridge on one of NY's finest?

Just look at the beautiful steel masterpiece (from wikipedia):

In regards to your Rothenburg Center, Patrick- what an excellent blend of buildings! great work on those! ;)

I found one too of an arched bridge near Budapest.

http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=5d502ed177b014d92afef629750919c7&prevstart=0

I really like the arches, maybe they would make a nice dichotomy with Jefferson Bridge. :fruit:

Patrick
Mar 29, 2008, 9:33 AM
Okay thanks for all the feedback!

I was considering an arch bridge, but I've never attempted it, and frankly it looks quite hard to reproduce an Arch Bridge.

Although a Candaliver Bridge like the Queensburough Bridge is defiantly a must, and I already have one planned for the New Ganton Bridge, connecting Staunton and New Ganton (a large industrial Staunton borough). The New Ganton Bridge will look similar to the Queensburough Bridge but simpler (obviously) and have 2 - 3 towers, depending on the length. The bridge will be located on the South River, the Staunton and Jefferson Bridge will join into one freeway, a section of it going directly through Staunton, heading to New Ganton, hence the New Ganton Bridge.

I've modeled off the Staunton Bridge after the lesser-known Triborough Bridge Suspension Bridge Span, one of my favorites, completed in 1936, designed by Othmar H. Ammann. The Staunton Bridge isnt much of a direct copy and has many features of its own.

http://en.structurae.de/files/photos/1/triborough2.jpg

The Staunton Bridge was completed in 1919 after years of construction, the Staunton Bridge would be Staunton's first major Suspension Bridge, with six lanes, finally connecting Staunton and Jefferson creating further development and putting less stress on the Ferry System.

The Jefferson Bridge was completed in 1931 as a much needed second bridge to connect Jefferson & Staunton. The bridge was much bigger than its neighbor the Staunton Bridge. The Jefferson Bridge is one of Staunton's main landmarks, appearing frequently in pop culture involving Staunton. The Jefferson Bridge has seven lanes of traffic and three sidewalks. Unfortunanatly the Jefferson Bridge is Staunton's most popular suicide spot, being centerstage for many notorious deaths caught live on TV.

"Big Blue" is the Jefferson Bridge, "The Jolly Green Giant" is the Staunton Bridge. The designs will change a bit once I finish the bridges (which probably wont be for a while)

http://i27.tinypic.com/1ih00j.jpg

Oh & here's a skyline shot showing the progress, as you can see I've been working on Callahan Village, low rises sure do add a lot of realism! But I still have a long way to go!

And the New Ganton Bridge plan sounds cool. Choosing one based on the Queensboro Bridge will suit the connection to an industrial borough just perfectly.

Patrick, both those bridges look like perfect fits for the Staunton skyline and waterfront. I cannot wait to see them incorporated in. And glad to see a skyline shot. It looks very realistic and proportioned. You did an excellent job with the revitalizating of the city.

Actually that was just future space for the grid, but then after you said it, I was thinking a Collage or Hospital (there will be a minor sized hospital in Callahan Village, although not intended in that spot), after putting in the Jefferson Bridge, a large section of the bridge slices through the middle, so most of that area will be meaningless space and parking lots, and the entrances to the Jefferson Bridge.

Though the Staunton bridge i'm not sure about. i not sure what it is about it, maybe its just to thin or something...

Yeah, I actually agree, maybe I'll fatten it up.

Hah, I wish! But GTA IV will be a replica of real life NYC, wihch is kewl, but gets me mad since Staunton was based on the original GTA III's Liberty City.

The history of Staunton's main bridge!

Staunton Harbor Bridge

Oh yes, the first Stauntonite Bridge crossing to Jefferson. It was obviously modeled off of the Golden Gate Bridge, it never expanded after it reached Jefferson. The massive towers and large roadway dwarfed everything around it and was simply unpractical. But it was a Start.

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/2989/apic6rx8.jpg

Jefferson Bridge

Very well into Staunton's Development, I realized the original bridge was mugly, so I redit it, to a much smaller and realalistic bridge, having a simple arch design, but still having its cool blue steel color.

http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/9796/ghjos2.jpg

Fort Staunton Memorial Bridge

After the Jefferson Bridge, Staunton expandad, went photo, crashed and was set back, leaving a newer 1900's version of the bridge, clad in Limestone?

http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/5198/ghjmj3qa2.jpg

Later clad in brick.....oh Staunton, one year ago, I miss it!

http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/6913/000001fx6.jpg

Jefferson Bridge II/Callahan Bridge/North End Bridge?

By this time Staunton was really rolling, but was close to the major overhaul. According to my old posts, this was the original destined bridge for Staunton, I never completed the model because it was way too hard for me back then.

http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/2989/01pd6.jpg

Later would appear in Staunton 3.0, with a different and more realistic base, strangely I never did update about it or post too many individual shots of the bridge.

http://i25.tinypic.com/2qnp5ir.jpg

Jefferson Bridge III

Yeah, its done, I'm proud of it, its not very detailed, being the roadway is curved and all, but oh well, I like it, and it doesn't look too much like a rip of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. Its much larger than the last version and stretches 5,400 feet in total and has a span of 1,400 feet. The bridge has one level of traffic, 7 lanes, and 3 walkways.

You brought back some memories! I remember looking at those old "cell shaded" style images of Staunton where you made it cartoonish before I was even a member here. It has changed a lot since then, but it's still the same great city.

The bridge, it's wonderful! Just think, it has been a couple of years since the start, and your skills as a modeler have improved and so has the bridge. This is the best version of the Staunton Bridge!

Looks great. Your really are the best at textures in Cityscape. I think a college would look weird in that big block so maybe a hospital would be nice. After all, there's easy access to the freeway, in the heart of the city, and you can make several buildings like research centers and what not.

First off, I really have to give you credit for sticking with this city for as long as you have. I remember seeing this city for the first time when I was just a lurker on this forum, and it seems that the city is getting better than ever.

The bridge is a gem, and hardly seems like a rip-off of the Ben Franklin. You did an excellent job with it, and I like the stone anchor block all the way to the left of the pic.

Once again, excellent job. Would you mind at some point posting a pic that shows that location of the bridge in proximity to the city center?

The Jolly Green Giant!! I love it! :) Same anchor blocks? No big deal. It's not that much noticeable, but you could always alter the color a bit. mess with the hue and saturation and make it a brown or gray. although the current normal color that's probably the best to go with green.

Aleks
Mar 31, 2008, 7:05 AM

Aleks
Apr 6, 2008, 12:00 AM
Yeah, a long skinny island would look great for the Ganton Bridge. Maybe a museum, a pre-1920's federal prison, or some kind of WWII refugee camp. Wow, downtown is tiny compared to the rest of the island. I like that you pit small building like on the last shot. You can see a small chapel (?) and s small building next to the tall towers.

Do your textures turn into plain color when you move around the city?

Apr 6, 2008, 5:31 AM
First of all Patrick, I'd like to congratulate you on making such an awesome city. It's shots like the one above that really show just how great Staunton is. It can't be said enough.

And I never noticed your One Liberty Place look-alike before. Very nice

As for suggestions, yes, I have some. New Ganton is the industrial zone, correct? Since you liked the idea of a Queensboro based bridge all the more reason why to agree with the others above for having an island in between New Ganton! Something really old and industrial, like a historical factory of some sort with big tall smokestacks (like Roosevelt island's asylum i think it was?) would look perfect on the island!

Do you have any tunnels yet? Realistically, it would be ideal to have at least one on each side.

Keep it up!!

How bout an island for the new ganton bridge?

Yeah, a long skinny island would look great for the Ganton Bridge. Maybe a museum, a pre-1920's federal prison, or some kind of WWII refugee camp.

I like that you pit small building like on the last shot. You can see a small chapel (?) and s small building next to the tall towers. Do your textures turn into plain color when you move around the city?

Thanks! That’s the Saint Nicholas Church, a teeny tiny church on Weslty Avenue, I wrote about it a while back:

Saint Nicholas Church
Completed in 1896. Saint Nicholas Chruch is a full service parish church on the edge of the Downtown District. The church, one of the oldest structures remaining in downtown is also home to a historical cemetery. The Church was never in any real danger to be demolished, but skyscrapers and townhomes rise around it from the 30's to 60's. To ensure its safety the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 19th, 1976.

And I never noticed your One Liberty Place look-alike before. Very nice

Probably because its not very tall, it’s a small filler building only about 20 stories high.

Do you have any tunnels yet? Realistically, it would be ideal to have at least one on each side.

Well in the last version there was the New Ganton Tunnel, which led off after Westly Avenue, It was meant to meet at Presidents Island (artificial island for special uses), then split, one going to the great industrious burough of New Ganton, another going to Starkton Island, an island part of the wonderously large New Ganton landfill.

Basically, I’ll probably put that tunnel back in, as well with some new ones, but that wont be for a while.

I love these kinda shots. the ones that show the inside of the city AWESOME:tup:

Your in luck! Heres some more:

Kent Square, home to its fabulous 3 oddly shaped towers (Nexxon Energy (no longer NexxonOIL as of March), the Kent Enterprise Plaza, and the Grant Provident Center.

The Civic Center viewed from Monmouth Circle, Central Avenue & 5th Street. Home to the Statue of John D. Callahan, Staunton's "First True" Hero. (I'm not sure what he did yet!)

Hey pat, kent field site 2 would be a better choice, have it framed by the bridges and work a boardwalk into the design, and have the outfield wall face downtown. It becomes a focal point of the area and a great place for skyscraper buffs to see a great american pastime and a great american skyline.

:previous: What he said. It looks great and the statue look good too. It makes the city look way more realistic than any of us. I would use textures in my city but I like glassy towers and there aren't many of those in Seattle so oh well. Did you render that Civic Center shot then photoshop the sky?It doesn't look like you renderd the buildings but the statue looks realistic, like you rendered it. Looks great.

I would also like to mention how much I love your trees Patrick. It's as if we are looking through the leaves of real trees the way you have them transparent in some spots. All those litle details you do don't go unnoticed. Your work is exceptional Patrick.

Try making a new island with modern buildings, and try making taller buildings it is hard to see any difference when you only build low rises.:)

Yeah, I was thinking that, the view is incredible, Downtown Staunton with the Jefferson Bridge in front of it, but I was thinking it was too unreal. But hell, I'll give it a shot when I get there!

I always imagined the KENT Field by the Jefferson Bridge, with a tall observation tower (500-700 feet) nearby, good idea, bad idea?

Did you render that Civic Center shot then photoshop the sky?It doesn't look like you renderd the buildings but the statue looks realistic, like you rendered it. Looks great.

Kerkythea is EVIL to textures, EVIL! What a horrid process, so all my pics are 100% photoshopped!

Uhm, well yeah, an Island of all tall modern building is not in the forcast, I mean Staunton is going to be a realalistic east coast city, I dont know any east coast USA cities with all skyscrapers. Staunton is only becomeing realalistic because of its lowrises! I mean ahh! Of course it wont be much of a difference, but now with Callahan Village the skyline looks much more filled in from Jefferson!

http://i31.tinypic.com/fp14ro.jpg

Oh && I realized I almost never post skyline shots from Jefferson, heres one! Partly the reason I never did is because of Callahan Village, you can see on the bottom right that its filling in!

Looks awesome. Lloyd is still my favorite high-rise in your city. That late 1980's(?) white building in the middle of the last shot adds difference to the skyline, looks great. You should add ships to the city just so you can take a shot and then erase the ship/boat. It would make the city look way more realistic and add a cool extra to the city.

WOW! WOW! WOW! that skyline shot is REDONKULOUS! I have to agree with aleks here Lloyd Tower is easily the best high rise in the city. I also must say that for not even being rendered anymore your shots are superb.

The Lloyd Tower does add a lot of balance to the skyline. It, in part with the Galcorp Tower are the two focus points when you look directly at the skyline.

You have the Lloyd which symbolizes the 'high society' of Staunton, and the Galcorp which symbolizes the corporate influence in the city. Then if you want to go a step further, you can inculde the Garden State Building as the symbol of the city's innovative drive in building and architecture.

The three make a good trio.

Here is my suggestion for your city:

Your city is mainly formed by buildings from 1880 to 1990 in New York. I suggest you to make a new area with more recent skyscrapers like the ones proposed for the Hudson Yards in NY... Using more glass, modern shapes and stuff like that.

Hope you can do it. I love to see the contrast between the old and the new but all in the appropriate areas.

:???: What ?! There's plenty of difference in height, Staunton looks so much realistic now because it's got far more sensible density.

Keep doing plenty of the smaller buildings Patrick, they may not fill up the street as fast, but everyone, below, in front or behind the CBD skyscrapers makes them look even greater.

That I'm just not sure about yet. Like, Staunton was always concevied as a 90's styled East Coast City. 90's Style, and now with the 2000's boom, I'm debating on whether to put in newer buildings and mix them in. I'm leaning on no, meaning Staunton would be a timeless city, currently in a year such as 1998 or 99. If it was a bad city in the 90's also, I'm not sure of since I always said Staunton went bad in 2001, but that was before I realized Staunton lacks a 21st Century presence.

What are your guys opinions on this?

Here are two "lazily photoshoped" pics

No need to keep Staunton stuck in the 90s. I would like to see Staunton as a present day city kept up to date in building style, but at the same time having all of those classic older buildings would be such a great contrast.

I like those shots. I don't know if it was intentional, but the way you edited makes them look old and retro, washed-out, like they were taken in the 80s or something. Nice job!!

Is that a Marine Midland Building look-alike I see? You even have a red sculpture at the plaza to go with it. It's awesome.
