:previous: - A world wonder for sure.

I agree that the Burj will pave the way for a new order of tall structures.

Many taller are being planned.

Great time for skyscrapers.

:cheers:I agree, we have been in a phase, where nobody cared about building a new tallest building for several decades, until finally the Petronas Towers were built. This seems to have been the ignition for others to even beat them. And its a good advertisement for the countries.

But the the question is, when is this new trend going to stop. There must be a new barrier at some height which will hold for a few decades as well. But who knows how high this barrier will really be, or if it really exists?

Thinking of all those kilometre and mile-high visions and projects i think it will still take a while until there will be no real height improvement again.

I know about two deaths, one of which occurred due to a fall (but the fall was only from one floor to another and not all the way to the ground). (The other death was caused by a panel of glass which crushed a worker.)

There could have been other deaths, but I do not know about them. Hopefully someone esle can supply more details about this.

I was thinking about how a building like this couldn't get built anywhere where labor is anything above what they're paying there.

I wouldn't be surprised if it takes construction workers an hour to get to the top of the building an a hour to get back down. Imagine there is a crew of 20 men working at the top. Here in the states, they would cost their employer about $50 per hour. That means everyday it would cost $2k just to move the workers to the top of the building. It would be cheaper to give them a helicopter ride to work everyday

The buildings on the left is actually one building: it is a mall. The Mercato Shopping Mall, built in 2002, is designed to look like a Renaissance-era, Italian town.

Dubai needs more stuff like that to make it feel more like a city.

I disagree. To be a "real city" you should not build malls. You should embrace your own culture and create vibrant streets with shops along those streets. Creating malls, attempting to look like an old European city or even trying to become a hub for skyscraper development (i.e. attempting to look like New York, Chicago or Hong Kong) definitely do not mean you will become a real city. To achieve that distinction, you need to have density (but not necessarily tall buildings), culture and a distinctive atmosphere.

The spaces near the top of the tower would seem to be pretty valuable even if the floor area is fairly small. I suppose there is a good reason why these upper floors are not going to be occupied. Perhaps its just not practical to provide all the required services to this very slender upper portion of the tower, such as primary and emergency access, plumbing, air conditioning, etc. Any occupied floor is going to require a substantial mechanical room above it.
Its too bad but it looks like the upper floors of the world's tallest building will be empty space, maybe storage for window washing equipment and a spare light bulb for the spire.

That's a pretty random question, but I think the answer would undoubtedly be no. The earth is 40 000km in diameter, and the Burj will be about 800m when it's finished, that means that the Burj is .00001996 the diameter of the earth and would probably not be perceptible to human fingers.

Supposedly the fingers can feel a bump as small as 3 micrometers high. The Burj Dubai would be about 14 micrometers scaled to the size of a bowling ball. I think you might just be able to feel it.

Some tall buildings are used as radio/TV stations. Since the 'feed line' between the radio and the antenna must be short, the radios are located in the top several stories of the building. The technicians will be climbing stairs to get to their radios.
Common uses include:
TV & radio broadcast
paging transmitters
repeaters for public service, ham radio, business mobile communications
marine radio.

Supposedly the fingers can feel a bump as small as 3 micrometers high. The Burj Dubai would be about 14 micrometers scaled to the size of a bowling ball. I think you might just be able to feel it.

Even if you do feel it, you probably wouldn't even notice it unless you're really trying to, since it would probably be much less palpable than grain lines on a wooden surface.

Its captivating to watch Dubai being built on the multiple threads on this site. The speed at which they move is unreal. Not only building several skyscrapers, but mass transit and gigantic malls and god knows what else that I haven't been able to pick up in the fantastic photos posted here. It is also particularly interesting to me to see the sheer amount of wealth that appears to exist in this city; multi-million dollar project after multi-million dollar project, with Mercedes' and yachts galore. Absolutely amazing.

I have made a website for those people who are interested in new projects in Dubai: http://dubai.mag3.be

Feel free to look around. ;)

The cladding is making a huge difference,
I love it! :D

All the steel levels / sections will have cladding that looks like 3.2 m. sections right to the top of tier 26. The sections are 6.4 m. high ( except the ones with mezzanines ).Tiers 27 to 30 are the circular pinnacle with no cladding.

when the burj is finished and someone stands in front of it how many "levels" could he count then?

Hi Neo.

Not quite.

Up to level 155 mezz. yes you can go by the cladding.

The steel levels no - the cladding will look like 2 levels for every 1 steel level except the mezzanine levels.

That's a pretty random question, but I think the answer would undoubtedly be no. The earth is 40 000km in diameter, and the Burj will be about 800m when it's finished, that means that the Burj is .00001996 the diameter of the earth and would probably not be perceptible to human fingers.

Could you check your stats for the size of the earth? The circumference, not the diameter of the earth, is around 40,000 km or 25,000 miles. Didn't Eratosthenes prove that around 2400 years ago?
