For the people who do not visit the official website regularly, Emaar has updated the height of the Burj Dubai. As of 27 December, the Burj Dubai had 158 floors and is at 598.5 metres (1963.58 feet).

HOLD UP!
Is he talking about the floor height?
cause if not then this wont be the tallest tower in the world for very long, the 2000 ft chicago spire is already uc.

Everyone knows that the developers have been secretive about the final height all along. So how confident can we be in that 2034' figure for roof height now that the concrete core has reached its final height?

Is it possible they might still end up surprising us by building significantly taller than they are letting on or does the termination of the concrete core now basically "lock in" the final number of floors and the height of the spire?

No; it was always the steel structure that was to be capable of expansion in case of re-heightening becoming "necessary". The concrete structure would have been the same regardless.

It's also still almost finished. The spire won't take as long as the floors and when we see tall rods instead of horizontal lines then we'll know when the floors are finished. Also, since the building is almost finished the company can't keep the secret height "secret" anymore since people get interviewed, people sell info, blah blah blah.

I think it will be the office for the corporate head of EMAAR. I would much rather talk about this building then see updates daily. SWFC is more interesting and so is the HCC.

But anyways, how many cars will the garage fit in the Burj Dubai?

me too, may be due to the great height which needs more time for lifting the steel and the difficulty to work at that height regarding the safety
i just guess

I think it's because this is their first level with steel so maybe they're taking their time testing everyting and predicting potential problems that could occur. Once they are happy with the situation, they'll continue on a faster pace. And, as bassem said, it's not easy to work at that height :).

and those labours who started the steel section must be different from those used to work in the concrete section
i mean the concreate labours used to work at that hight as they started building it from the beginning and finally reached that height on the other hand you will find the steel labours are asked to start from a hight of 2000 ft without any experience like that b4

There's wind in buildings 500 feet tall. It all depends on the location. I'm sure that at a certain wind speed they will slow down or stop working for safety issues. How many people have died working on this tower?

If no person has died then I would say this is the safest building ever constructed compared to height. And the speed is incredible too.

br.reese
Jan 5, 2008, 3:12 PM
I,ve done both,(concrete and iron work) hanging iron is a lot faster and easier. Those guys up there are fearless. The craine speed will be what is dangerous. The wind wipping the beams around.

I doubt updraft is slowing the construction.
But to think that there has only been around 25 meters added in the last 3 months make me think they are running into some unforeseen problems.
It seems there might only be about a dozen steelworkers on the job at any given time.
I hope the pace picks up again soon because my enthusiasm is fading.

My guess is that the prefab steel parts are not fitting together well.

You gotta remember that this is the first steel floor, and they will learn all the obstacles and workarounds on this floor. After this floor is cleared they will have some experience on what they are up against.

If no person has died then I would say this is the safest building ever constructed compared to height.

Unfortunately I think they have had a handful of deaths while building this tower...but literally only a couple. 2-5?

I was trying to find info somewhere but I can't find it. I know at least one worker died back in June '07. He fell from the 130th floor to the 108th.

Only 22 floors because of the setbacks, but it's TWENTY TWO floors. That will not feel good. :(

I agree with all the recent posts, once they get the first steel floor and 'foundation' of steel done and secured to the concrete frame then the rest towards further rising will be easy.

Does anyone know the ground area of the tower?

I have some numbers, but I am not sure how accurate they are.
The area of the circle is 7,853.98 square metres (84,539.75 square feet). This is if the length of tiers are 50 metres (164.042 feet).

Article by Sheikh Mohammed in Wall Street Journal

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our Ambitions for the Middle East
By MOHAMMED BIN RASHID AL MAKTOUM
January 12, 2008; Page A9

During President Bush's visit to Dubai on Monday, he will find a big city like no other that has risen from the Arabian desert. The joke making the rounds here is that the crane should be designated as Dubai's national bird, so extensive is the engineering activity. We also plan to keep on investing in markets and businesses abroad, including in our own neighborhood, where economic development has long been uneven.

Our plans do not flow from mere ambition; they are a necessity. Consider that only 3% of our revenue is from exports of diminishing crude-oil reserves; 30% is from tourism, and there's increasing revenue from manufacturing and other sectors such as hospitality, technology and transportation.
[Dubai Photo]
The Burj Dubai tower rises in Dubai. The world's tallest building since July 2007, it has also become the tallest free-standing structure on earth.

But to term our emirate "Dubai Inc.," as some do, suggests that commerce, more than anything else, is our leitmotif. It is true, of course, that Dubai has been a trading port and a commercial hub for several centuries. But the ethos of Dubai was, and is, all about building bridges to the outside world; it was, and is, about creating connections with different cultures.

As a child, I learned how important it was to establish an enabling economy where the government provided incentives and an ethics-based regulatory environment, but left it to the inventiveness and energy of the private sector to expedite economic growth.

I learned my capitalism in the bazaars and boardwalks of Dubai. And perhaps the fundamental question that I learned to always ask was: How can we serve as agents of positive change? That's why I prefer to call Dubai "Catalyst Inc."

We live in a tough neighborhood. We live in a country that has been surrounded by difficult issues for several decades -- the Iraq-Iran war, the invasion of Kuwait, the current war in Iraq. Despite all that, Dubai has learned how to reinvent itself and cope.

We believe that helping to build a strong regional economy is our best opportunity for lasting social stability in the Middle East. That's why, for instance, we strongly support the new Gulf Common Market, which was launched on Jan. 1 and which will eventually lead to more regional economic integration, enhanced intra-Gulf trade, and a common currency for the six countries that form the Gulf Cooperation Council -- Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

There are more initiatives underway, many of which are aimed at ensuring prompt payment of salaries, and improvements in working conditions for unskilled foreign workers. While capitalism doesn't always create egalitarian societies, I like to think that in Dubai we are making the effort to cast the net wide when it comes to sharing prosperity.

I also like to think that we in Dubai also learn from our mistakes. We have had some object lessons. The Dubai Ports episode in the U.S. last year was one.

We analyzed our experiences, and we now approach our international investments in a much more holistic manner. We take the time to analyze the social, political and economic landscape, identify the stakeholders, and then carefully prepare the way by ensuring that the concerns of all parties are properly addressed. When disputes occur, we generally find a way to work through them.

When there was resistance to our investment in some European bourses, we listened carefully to various arguments and then successfully negotiated our way through the situation. As with CEOs in corporate boardrooms, leaders of sovereign nations need to act collaboratively in order to engender progress.

It doesn't take the visit of a capitalism-boosting American president for this region to freshly understand that it needs to accelerate economic progress.

When you look at the region, there are parts that are behind compared to the rest of the world -- behind when it comes to the economy, business and social development. We would like these less-developed parts of the region to be like Europe, Japan, Singapore and the rest of the industrialized world.

Nearly 1.5 billion people live in our neighborhood, and more than 50% of them are under the age of 25. In the Arab world alone, some 80 million young people -- out of a total population of 300 million -- are seeking jobs. I look at these young people as extraordinary resources for nation-building. If we can take our vision beyond Dubai, I think we can save a lot of young people from humiliating unemployment, from becoming extremists.

Education and entrepreneurship are the twin underpinnings for building a safer world. With these two institutions, we'll have fewer angry young people, fewer frustrated youths ready to embrace radicalism because they have nowhere else to turn.

I am often asked, "What does Dubai really want?" Well, here's my answer: What we want is the continuation of a journey that began with my forebears. I truly believe that human beings have a tremendous capability of changing and improving their lot. Change and modernization are inevitable in this age of galloping globalization. But we in the Middle East need to continually and carefully calibrate that change in the public interest.

I am also often asked, "What are Dubai's political ambitions?" Well, here's my answer: We don't have political ambitions. We don't want to be a superpower or any other kind of political power. The whole region is over-politicized as it is. We don't see politics as our thing, we don't want it, we don't think this is the right thing to do.

We are engaged in a different type of war that's really worth fighting -- fighting to alleviate poverty, generating better education, creating economic opportunity for people, and teaching people everywhere how to be entrepreneurs, to believe in themselves.

Humility and tolerance run deep in the Maktoum family and are very important in trying to serve one's people. I am anchored in that tradition, which is why my favorite activity is listening.

I always ask: How can I help? What can I do for people? How can I improve people's lives? That's part of my value system. It's too late for me to change that system, but it isn't too early for me to say to the world that the Dubai narrative is all about changing people's lives for the better through smart capitalism, willpower and positive energy.

Sheikh Mohammed completed two years as ruler of the Emirate of Dubai, and vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, earlier this week. His memoir will be published later this year.

Dubai will have a total of 270km of tramlines by 2020, which will be distributed on seven different lines spread across the city to boost the public transport system.

^ the investments they are making now are for the sake of depth in the future. They are pouring billions into infrastructure in order to say "hey, come on! we're here, and we're serious", and although very abnormal, it seems like it could work.

This picture is pretty convincing that, although there is a lot of barrenness, dubai does have something amazing to offer

While growth in Dubai is impressive, it's nowhere near several other cities, most notably Shenzhen, China. Went from ~30k in 1985 to over 12 million today. There's a thread on it in city discussions, I think.

Not unless they're diesels. Gas engines conk out as soon as the tailpipe's obstructed.

There is something about the cladding on this tower that just doesn't look right. In itself, it is quite a nice facade, but it just doesn't fit the shape of the building, or something.
I think a darker/more blue cladding, similar to the one that were in older renderings some years back, would fit this tower better.

Well, who cares, it's the world's tallest building - nobody is going to care about the cladding anyway. :)

But the cladding isn't only a question of good appearance. Because a dark cladding results in a higher energy needed to cool down the tower! A bright cladding reflects more sunlight, and I think it looks better.

I have to disagree with that. While people will notice the building due to its height, it will not be the only thing they will look at. I am sure people will be commenting on whether they like or dislike the façade and the design for many years to come.

I think the design is one that will only have justice done to it by buildings constructed in its proximity, and or the city of Dubai for that matter. The type of architecture the Burj is made up of will be considered in the eyes of the Western World as tacky/ gaudy (for the most part).

I believe that people are getting caught up in the height of the Burj without realizing that it is indeed just a fancy toothpick with a facade that will become quickly outdated.

When I see the building's base, it looks more to me like a Marriot Vacation Club, rather then the base of the World's tallest building. I think the complex was treated more like a 'Disney World' and much potential was lost. It's tacky in my eyes and is expressing more dollar signs than the true culture of Dubai. People travel to witness culture, and this building's design and what it around it is not culture, but a theme park.

Just my 2 cents.

Hi all.

:previous: :previous:

Oil is only 5 % of Dubai's GDP. It is much higher for UAE as a whole but NOT for the emirate of Dubai.

:previous:

The only western world eyes that see the Burj as tacky are the ones clouded with envy.
The structure has the most complex setbacks and floorplan changes of any ever built. A fancy toothpick ? I am left wondering if that comment comes from some made towards you in the past ...
You are entitled to your opinion but I don't think it is in any way tacky. To me this project looks well planned out and the whole area looks amazing.
