If someone is from Dubai, there are some places you cant ogle women such as the beach. You have to express yourself somewhere.

Do the planners of the BD complex as well as the Business Bay leave any space or provisions for future light rail or other commuter branches? That place looks pretty pedestrian-oriented (at least by Dubai standards), and the developers definitely have the money to run a couple of branches across the complex, so are there any plans?

Keep those great pictures coming, Imre.

The original supplier went bankrupt, and they had to find a new one.

Its quite funny here in Toronto the media is like counting down when this building is taller the CN Tower. The Cn Tower people are like "we are quite shocked it took 30 years." Thats when the building was built.

Like it matters, people will flock to this buildings and people will still come see ours....

Congratulation's on becoming the world's tallest free standing structure!

The cool thing is that this building will be taller than those Guyed masts too.
Finnaly the world's tallest structure will be a skyscraper again.

One thing I love about this tower is that it will be the tallest PERIOD. For the time being anyway.

There won't be any confusing about what is the tallest, such as highest floor level, the spire, etc.

Congrats!!

Well, Dubai is getting Dubai Metro. It is a light-rail train that will go throughout the city. There is a stop at the Burj Dubai.
Then in addition to that, developers are creating their own monorails. There is already one under construction on The Palm Jumeirah. Others are planned for the other two Palm Islands, for Dubai Waterfront, and for the Dubai International Financial Center.
And yes, there is one planned for Downtown Dubai (the entire development consisting of the Burj Dubai, Dubai Mall, etc.). But I have not heard a lot about it, so I do not know how far along the design is or if they will even do it.
As for Business Bay, I cannot recall ever hearing about one. But I am sure that it has probably been considered.

Thanks for the info. Do you have any plans/links for any of those rail systems (I've only seen the Dubai Metro one). Also, will any of these independent light rail systems connect to each other? If Dubai really strives to be a world class city, it must have a competent infrastructure, and subway/light rail is often the crown jewel of many world cities' transportation networks - New York, London, Paris, Moscow, etc.

Thanks for the info. Do you have any plans/links for any of those rail systems (I've only seen the Dubai Metro one).

I did a search on Gulf News (http://www.gulfnews.com) for monorails. I found four decent articles that may provide what you need.
30 May 2005: Emaar plans to build monorail around Burj Dubai district (http://archive.gulfnews.com/articles/05/03/30/158596.html)
8 December 2005: Seven Dubai monorails planned (http://archive.gulfnews.com/articles/05/12/08/10003429.html)
15 February 2006: Two companies in race for City of Arabia monorail (http://archive.gulfnews.com/articles/06/02/15/10018804.html)
2 May 2006: Jebel Ali Airport City to build monorail network (http://archive.gulfnews.com/articles/06/03/02/10022554.html)

Also, will any of these independent light rail systems connect to each other? If Dubai really strives to be a world class city, it must have a competent infrastructure, and subway/light rail is often the crown jewel of many world cities' transportation networks - New York, London, Paris, Moscow, etc.

I believe all of them will connect to one of the four lines that are apart of Dubai Metro. Also, part of the Dubai Strategic Plan (2015) that was released on 3 February 2007 deals with transportation. In the speech given by Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, he says:
[Dubai will] provide an integrated road and transportation system to facilitate people and goods movement while improving safety for all system users. This involves addressing current congestion problems, and accomodating future needs by increasing the share of public transportation and decreasing transport by private vehicles; increasing the capacity of the road networks and transportation systems; securing optimal use through modern techniques, demand management, and accident and emergency management.

And if I am not mistaken, one of the goals of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is to increase the number of mass transit users and take many people out of their cars (whether by using buses, trains, or some form of water vehicle).

I hope I provided enough information on this topic. Let me know if you need more.

Speaking of labor costs, does anyone have the average construction labor wage for a U.S. worker versus abroad? To give you some perspective, the Chicago Spire video in the article from the Chcago Tribune on "How To Build Today's Supertalls":

http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/chi-070817tall-story,0,6407755.story

It said that it costs $250k to put in 1 large cassion at the site and I think there are at least 14 going in. Compare that with the Burj Dubai tower which is about $2b, +/- a few 100m.

Slugbelch
Aug 19, 2007, 3:07 AM
I think the steel will start on this side of the core first (SZR side)
and will begin when all the yellow (now dirty brown) panels are removed
http://aycu05.webshots.com/image/26684/2006002617650494514_rs.jpg
...but who knows.

The steel workers have got to be getting organized soon to begin work
as well as to begin those 700m+ "beam walks" in their sleep.

Enjoy.

Looks to me that the crane they are taking down would be in the way of the concrete winglets for levels 144 to 147. So I don't think they are just repairing it.

No wonder the Old Town is sought after. It is one of my favorite developments in the world. I'd definitely love to have a place there. The attention to detail is mind-blowing, especially for such a large development where you'd expect quantity to triumph over quality (e.g. International City in Dubai, one of my least favorite developments in the city).

^^ Agree, it's much nicer than I thought it would be. I expected cheap finishes, which is what usually happens when things are built in that style today but it turned out quite nice.

Hi all.

Here is something I've been working on for some time. I call it my construction slideshow. The shots are all from near the same angle - West to Southwest. They are as close as I could get to monthly - from early to July '07. I haven't picked out an August shot yet. I will post thumbs as some are large - click to see full size.

Here is a comparison of the original elevation plan drawing with a pic taken April 20 '07. I have lined up the pics as best I could with my limited Photoshop skills. The pics are not stretched in any way, just sized so that the levels line up. They do line up nicely, but we can see where the pics meet. There is 5 pics I lined up for this comparison as best I could.
Clearly the level heights match up between the drawing and the pictures almost perfectly showing how the structure is following the drawing exactly up to level 111. If we look at the picture we can see the builders have marked every 5 levels just to the right of the center of the core. The tiny white markers are in between the two worker elevator masts. Many close up pics show these with the numbers clearly.
Starting from the bottom, the level 5 marker is partly hidden by the rebar for the metro pylon. It is even with the top of the rebar, on the right side. As we can see by the drawing ( and by many early pics ) level 5 is 9 1/2 levels above the foundation raft. There is a 1/2 height, non-habitable level between the lowest level in the drawing and the raft. Also the Concourse level is almost double height with the ground level above that and level 1 above that. Also the top level of every Tier is slightly higher than normal both on the drawing and the pics. The top level of tier 0 is level 18, tier 1 is level 25, tier 2 is level 33, and so on.
If we count the levels between the markers on both the pic and the drawing, they correspond exactly. Marker and level 20 is above the first set of mechanical levels. They don't count any as double levels yet. Continue up to marker 45 and we see they have counted a double level ( or "skipped" a level ). It is level 41 that is missing. We can see that level 40 marker is the tallest level of the second set of mechanical levels and there is only 4 levels to marker 45. Again this matches the drawing.
Continuing up we see a worker elevator on level 58. Between marker 70 and 75 they have counted another double level. It is level 74 that is missing, level 73 is the tallest of the third set of mechanical levels. The highest marker placed so far is level 90. Counting up we see the slightly higher than normal level 98, which is the top level of tier 8. 107 is the last normal height level before the fourth mechanical levels. The top level of tier 9 is level 111 so they will have to count 1 double level to get that number, level 110 is missing. This is a change from the drawing and is probably due to the revised placement of the observation deck.

The original elevation drawing has been deviated from after level 111. We start seeing the re-design(s) now, beginning at level 112 as I believe the drawing is the 705 meter design because of the way tier 18 ends flat, with a smaller spire continuing up. The newer 818 ( or taller) meter design continues with the spiralling setbacks through to tier 30.

Enjoy.

Hi all.

Here is a tier analysis.

Here I will explain the tier methodology of the Burj Dubai.

Tier 30, 29, 28, and 27 is the pinnacle and is symetrical. The first level ( not actually a level, but I will use this term as it will be applicable for the lower tiers ) has tier 26 terrace before rising up. The terrace is the "roof" of the "wing" below.
Tier 30 is pinnacle 4.
Tier 29 is pinnacle 3.
Tier 28 is pinnacle 2.
Tier 27 is pinnacle 1.

Tier 26 - spire level 5, begins with tier 25 terrace then rises up with 1 wing added to the pinnacle.
Tier 25 - spire level 4, begins with tier 24 terrace then rises up with 2 wings.
Tier 24 - spire level 3, begins with tier 23 terrace then rises up symetrically with 3 wings.
Tier 23 - spire level 2, begins with tier 22 terrace then rises up with 1 wing added.
Tier 22 - spire level 1/roof 4, begins with tier 21 terrace then rises up with 2 wings.
Tier 21 - roof 3, begins with tier 20 terrace then rises up symetrically with 3 wings.
Tiers 20, 19, and 18 continue the trend with adding 1, 2, and 3 wings respectfully. All begin with their first level including the terrace of the wing from the tier below. So tier 18 is symetrical with 3 wings.
Tier 20 is roof 2.
Tier 19 is roof 1.
Tier 18 begins with level 160 Mezz.

Tiers 17, 16, and 15 continue the same trend with tier 15 being symetrical with 3 wings.
Tier 17 begins at level 159 and ends at 160 Intermediate.
Tier 16 begins at level 156 and ends at 158.
Tier 15 begins at level 152 and ends at 155.
Tiers 14, 13, and 12 continue with adding 1, 2, and 3 wings respectfully and all begin their first level with a terrace of the wing from the tier below. Tier 12 is symetrical and is the first tier that is only the inner core with 3 meter wings.
Tier 14 begins at level 148 and ends at 151.
Tier 13 begins at level 144 and ends at 147.
Tier 12 begins including the terrace that is the roof of the last setback of the South wing at level 139 then ends at level 143.

Tier 11 begins including the terrace of the last setback of the mall facing wing at level 124 then ends at level 138.
Tier 10 begins including the terrace of the last setback of the SZR facing wing at level 112 then ends at level 123.
Tier 9 starts at level 99 including the terrace from setback 3 of the South facing wing then ends at level 111. This tier is symetrical with three 9 meter wings.

Tier 8 starts at level 87 + terrace of setback 3 of the mall wing, then ends at 98.
Tier 7 starts at level 76 + terrace of setback 3 of the SZR wing, then ends at 86.
Tier 6 starts at level 64 + terrace of setback 2 of the south wing, then ends at 75. This tier is symetrical with three 18 meter wings.

Tier 5 starts at level 53 + terrace of setback 2 of the mall wing, then ends at 63.
Tier 4 starts at level 43 + terrace of setback 2 of the SZR wing, then ends at 52.
Tier 3 starts at level 34 + terrace of setback 1 of the south wing, then ends at 42. This tier is symetrical with three 27 meter wings.

Tier 2 starts at level 26 + terrace of setback 1 of the mall wing, then ends at 33.
Tier 1 starts at level 19 + terrace of setback 1 of the SZR wing, then ends at 25.
Tier 0 starts at level 7 + a terrace of podium 3 of all 3 wings, then ends at 18. This tier is symetrical with three 36 meter wings and is the same size as the foundation raft.

Podium 3 starts at level 5, includes a terrace from podium 2 on all 3 wings then ends at level 6.
Podium 2 starts at level 3, includes a terrace from podium 1 on all 3 wings then ends at level 4.
Podium 1 starts at the Ground level then ends at level 2.

The lower levels start at the uninhabitable Raft level, then levels B2, B1, then ends at the Concourse level.

Bikes - I am honored you have my analysis from May on your site. You might want to update it with this one. There was some small errors on the one from May and this one includes more info. ( some credit would be nice but this is in the public domain so it is up to you bud ) The level heights and pour times and pour steps for tiers 10 to 13 are extrapolated from the source info and from pics.

I will post these thumbs to show source. Click on them to see full size. The first 3 are source to level 111. The last 4 are source from tier 14 and up.

i admire their ambition, their feats are no doubt amazing, but the city looks funny:S i guess cuz there is soo many super talls with like 3 floor apartments close to it, or extreme supertalls with empty lots around them. Needs more midrise(highrise to normal places) infill

Please excuse my lack of knowledge, but looking at Fury's diagrams it appears that the concrete part of the building is almost complete ??
If the top section will be steel, will it be accessable or is it effectively a crown on the top ?

For me, this building is turning out to be a great cure for inSOMnia. Maybe it's the setting in the middle of nowhere with no relation to any street grid. Maybe it's the lack of detailing. Maybe it's all the chaotic-looking setbacks that make this look too narrow - less like a building and more like an observation tower. Maybe it's the fact that it seems to be growing out of the top of a shopping mall.

But to me this must be the most boring "world's tallest building" ever built.

In absolute agreement with you! You took the words right out of my (fingers?). This tower is still a fairly stunning accomplishment in terms of engineering, though.

I alluded to the fact that it was designed by SOM. And it's by Adrian Smith out of Chicago, no less. I live in Chicagoland, so it's with no great pleasure that I say it certainly is not a particularly spectacular or creative work of architecture.

I agree with both you and GVNY. It is a stunning acomplishment of engineering, but completely lacking in passion. And every additional panel of glass added to its facade convinces me even more. This is a truly boring tower for being so freaking tall.

Yes, it's boring and tasteless. Stalinist Revival at its finest. All it needs for emphasis is to be topped off with a long pole and red star. I try to be positive but all I can see with the Burj and Dubai in general is one large set for future Mad Max movies. If you don't have it to begin with all the money in the world cannot buy beauty and culture.

Stalinist Revival? RIGHT...

That makes absolutely no sense... This looks like nothing ever built anywhere near Russia ever before... If you were referring to boring commie block architecture, this looks nothing like that at all... FREAK...

but still - it is unique in design , and they definately have style over there

MikeS

One can say of a particular 3 room bungalow that it is in the Art Deco style without having to defend the fact that it looks nothing at all like the Chrysler Building. So as with the Burj. Every time I see it and regardless of the perspective its most prominent features are the large multi-tiered base and the tapering steppedback central core along with its overall grandiosity.

And no, Nowhereman1280, I was not "referring to boring commie block architecture" as you suppose but rather the category known as Stalinist Architecture; commonly called wedding cake style. If you disagree with my observation, fine, but name calling is not an argument but rather the refuge of the ignorant.

Just to mention: :koko:
I like skyscrapers a lot, that’s why I am here. But I just contemplated that in warm countries it would be much better - same with could countries - to build facilities right below the soil surface. So you save tons of energy (for air condition when it’s hot or for heating when it’s cold). I believe traditionally there was a natural human instinct to behave like that. Maybe one can reconsider this idea for future constructions. Here in Germany, we start to doing that. Example our University Library at Dresden University of Technology. Most of it is below the surface, but right beneath it - so sun beams can still enter to enlighten it for free - plus the other energy benefits occurring. I think this is a very good idea regarding to prevent further useless energy waste.:notacrook:

I am no admirer of SOM designs. They have always tended to the safe, corporate-bland. What Gordon Childs did to Libeskind's elegant design for the WTC is unforgivable. Even with the security concerns that Childs used as an excuse for the redesign, given 15 minutes, any competent architect could have blended Childs' prism with the best features of Libeskind's forms and come up with something a lot more dynamic.

However...

Would you prefer adding a hole 2/3 way up? Or maybe a sphere, asymmetrically (or symmetrically) placed somewhere? What about a slot, off-axis, faced in magenta FRP? All the stuff, the flim-flam added to uninspired designs to try to turn them into real architecture. We see too much of this in almost every city world-wide and given a few years it will all look so dated.

Truly great architecture comes from a sensitive combination of proportion, detailing, light/dark interplay and a fair measure of inspiration - not the usual post-modern follow-the-herd stuff. This is the kind of architecture that remains classic for much longer.

I am not saying that BD falls into the latter, "Classic" category but I will reserve judgement until I see it complete and in context.
