Some people have said that the Burj Dubai is already the tallest in the world. According to the official website (http://www.burjdubai.com), as of 15 July 2007, it was only 507.3 metres (1664.37 feet) at 140 floors.
Then to further add to the Burj Dubai's current status, in Xpress4me (an online tabloid newspaper in Dubai) (http://www.xpress4me.com) an article (http://www.xpress4me.com/news/uae/dubai/20002074.html) from 16 July 2007 said that project managers have said the Burj Dubai will become the tallest in the world on 21 July 2007.

Here is the article:

Published: July 16, 2007, 18:12
Burj Dubai Towering Over 101 By Danna Farhang, Staff Reporter

This Saturday the Burj Dubai will officially become the world’s tallest structure, eclipsing the reigning champ, Taiwan's Taipei 101.

The building was last measured at 507.3 metres and 140 floors.

Project managers today refused to elaborate further on its current height - they would only say July 21 would be the record-breaking moment.

Burj Dubai factfile:
- There are approximately 5,900 employees working on site.
- Work continues around the clock with 3,500 workers by day and 1,500 by night.
- The biggest accident was in 2005, when a labourer fell to his death from an unsecured beam, according to RK Moorthy. a health and safety manager for Turner Construction.
- There are 1,210 fire extinguishers on the site.
- The biggest safety issues are major falls and falling materials, Moorthy said.
- The most common injuries are to the hands and feet.
- Some 18 people have been fired from their jobs for failing to follow safety regulations. Many of the dismissals were due to smoking in forbidden areas.
- Workers are now frisked for smoking-related materials. If caught, they are immediately fired.
- Project managers were speaking at a briefing session today between officials on the project and Dubai Civil Defence members including its head, Brigadier Rashid Thani Al Matrooshi.

Mohammad Moizuddin, on-site health and safety manager at Burj Dubai, said the sheer scale of the project means that more stringent safety and security measures have been put in place.

All labourers working on the site must take a three-hour safety course before starting their jobs.

Moizuddin said: "The workers are coming from villages and don’t know about health and safety. We took regulations from Dubai Municipality, Civil Defence, the federal government as well as input from international safety standards."

"We are one of the first projects to have a fire hydrant system during the construction phase - the most difficult thing is to maintain the fire hydrant system."

Strict labour controls have also been put in place to ensure illegal workers are not found anywhere on the project - a prerequisite to health and safety requirements.

The Burj Dubai will be completed next year. Its final height has not been made public.

Taj Mahal is on the UNESCO list of world heritage and has been attracting visitors for over 350 years.

No scyscrapers has ever made it to the UNESCO list and however impressive Burj Dubai look like it's about to become I kind of doubt that it will be as unique 350 years from now.

Burj Dubai is set to become the tallest building in the world

17-Jul-2007

The Burj Dubai will become the world's tallest tower on 21st July 2007 .The structure is set to overtake current record holder Taipei 101 which measures 509m. The announcement was made during a briefing on safety measures being adopted at the site. No further details were released.

When completed, it will hold the record in all four categories as recognized by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (i.e., highest structure, roof, antenna and occupied floor) and have the highest publicly accessible observation deck. The tip of the spire can be seen by a person 95 km (60 miles) away. A person in the Observation Deck can see as far away as 80 km (50 miles), which is more than twice the distance from Dubai to Al Ain. The design of the Burj Dubai is derived from the geometries of the desert flower and the patterning systems embodied in Islamic architecture. It combines these historical and cultural influences with cutting-edge technology to achieve a high-performance building which will set the new standard for development in the Middle East and become the model for the future of the city of Dubai.

Emaar gained the international spotlight with Burj Dubai, its iconic development, currently achieving the status of the second tallest tower in the world. A testimony to the company’s development expertise, Burj Dubai now also holds the record for the maximum number of storeys in any building, and the world-record for vertical concrete pumping. Just think about this guys to put things into perspective.

L197 and L198 add up to a total of 374sq/m....that's about the same as my large 4 bedroomed house! :koko:

L203 and L204 add up to 220sq/m....that's about the same size as my mothers average (in the UK) 3 bedroomed house!

We see so many photos of the top of this building and so many people remark "Oh, it's really getting thin at the top now"......for those of you who have no idea of the size of the 'uncompleted skinny end'.....it's just under half the area of a football pitch!

Yes, very much, I think 'ohh man its narrow now', but I've seen a few pics where there are lots of little blue-clad workers (I salute them all), and I realise once again that its a giant core, plenty of room for anything we can imagine.

The idea of 200+ building, hmm, whatever it will be, the mighty burj....what an achievement.

Even without windows, this building is surely the most amazing structure on the planet now.

They are both impressive structures, but what has put them on the UNESCO list and what has kept people visiting them for centuries is their cultural importance. They both have good stories to tell. Being an apartment or office building simply does not cut it.

Sears Tower, Petronas or Taipei 101 has not even really made it into popular culture. "Nuts" like us on this forum knows about these buildings, but none of us would be capable of mentioning a movie they have a central role in without an online search. I hope that Burj Dubai will do a better job the 10-20 years it may stay on top.

The most recent skyscraper that has really made it into popular culture is actually the World Trade Center and it's because it has a spesial story to tell.

Then there were a few posted a couple pages earlier. If you need bigger ones, let me know. I don't keep too many pics anymore so I may have to dig a bit to find some big ones. Thanks for the test shots. The second one looks like it would make a nice painting once it's colored in. It's a cliche to say it, but I can't help it--Dubai's not a city, its a construction site. Cranes clutter the skyline as far as the eye can see. There are yellow "Men at Work" signs up and down the coastal construction corridors that parallel Sheikh Zayed Road. Massive luxury apartment complexes, man-made island resorts, huge shopping malls and of course iconic skyscrapers.

I had coffee with two local contacts of mine at the cigar bar on the 10th floor of the sleek 40-story Emirates Towers hotel in the afternoon, then took a ride over to Burj Dubai, which may have just become the world's tallest building. The work-in-progress is up to 138 stories, approximately 1,675 feet (510.39 meters). That would mean that it has surpassed Tapei 101 in Tapei City, which had been the planet's highest, at 1,670 feet (509.1 meters), since its completion four years ago.

Earlier this year, Burj Dubai grew taller than the Sears Tower in Chicago and the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. The Sears Tower is still the highest, though, if you include the pinnacle at its top, which makes it 1,729 feet high. I could be wrong, but I think Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed will make sure his pinnacle shoots up higher than that. When Burj Dubai is completed in 2009, it will be Dubai's most prestigious address; it will feature office space, the Armani Hotel Dubai created by the Italian designer, residential accommodations and, of course, a shopping mall.

Dubai has a long tradition in trade, but the building boom of the last 15 years has transformed the emirate in every way. Real estate prices have doubled and tripled in the past few years, leading to speculation that Dubai is experiencing a bubble that is bound to burst. Last year when I put the question to Mohamed Ali Alabbar, chairman of Emaar Properties, Burj Dubai's developer, he argued that this was not the case. The reason he gave is that Dubai has become the oil-rich Arab region's first and only real business hub--its New York, or Hong Kong--and as such will continue attracting businesses and people to work in them for some time to come.

Sorry Graham, that notch is L139. ;)

No need for apologies friend.
The facts are here....
The notch occurs at the transition from 138 to 139 as the first and second diagrams show below.
Counting up from the know L124 OB deck that is.

So this means that the roof of the high wing will be the ceiling of the 138 level. Level 139 gets the giant balcony on the roof of 138 and level 140 gets the first "high side" winglet at it's floor level.

All is on track according to the third diagram below.

Credit to Altin D for the images.

http://gmfoto.com/burj138-139notchL.jpg
http://gmfoto.com/burj138-139notchS.jpg
http://gmfoto.com/diagram138.jpg

You need to rotate the diagram above anti-clockwise about 120 degrees to line up with the photos.

So - the original jist was .... No reductions or increases in the planned height are evidenced so far.
But it's true, the "oct pdf" image we both refer to seems wrong. I was wrong thinking it was correct.
Thanks for pointing that out.
The last diagram shown above is not from that .pdf info.
The well know diagram that it's from does match the progress perfectly so far though.

By the way - I do hope your suggestion of over 200 floors that can be accessed is true.
I had it figured at around 185 - but we'll see.
Accessable means a staircase? a wall mounted ladder? no plumbing or electricity? but you can get there and look out the window I guess.
But theoreticall you could climb onto the pinacle tip too, but - ahem. nevermind. hehe.

Burj Dubai skyscraper soars into record books
by David Westley on Thursday, 19 July 2007

The Burj Dubai is set to become the tallest building in the world, with some unofficial reports claiming the building overtook the Taipei 101 on Wednesday, and others that an official announcement will be made on Saturday.

Property developers Emaar are being tight lipped on the rumours and would not confirm the stories yesterday, but if confirmed, Dubai's latest icon must now be taller than 509 metres (1,671 feet), the height of Taiwan's Taipei 101.

Burj Dubai will eventually hold the record in all four categories as recognised by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, have the highest publicly accessible observation deck, and the world's fastest lift, which will shoot along at 65km/hour (40mph).

Until Emaar's official statement - expected shortly - there is still some confusion as to which record will have been broken however, with the Sears Tower, Ostankino Tower and CN Tower potentially still claiming to be tallest under various definitions of a ‘building' and ‘tower'.

What is clear is the building itself, which is now visible from across the city of Dubai, and upon completion will be possible to see from 90km away. The last official statement was released on July 15th when the tower's height was reported to be 507.3 metres (1,664.4 feet), totalling 140 completed floors.

That suggests Burj Dubai has surpassed the Petronas Twin Towers, presently the second-tallest building in the world at 452 metres (1,483 feet).

In February 2007, the Burj Dubai surpassed the Sears Tower as the building with the most floors.

The Burj Dubai is to be the centerpiece of a city within a city. The development as a whole will include 30,000 homes, nine hotels, 6.2 acres of parkland, 19 residential towers, the Dubai Mall, and a 30 acre man-made lake. The development will cost about $20 billion.

When Emaar does make its announcement, the Burj Dubai will still not, officially, be able to take the mantle as the world's tallest building. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat will not recognise its world-record height until it is completed.

Present records:

* Building with most floors: 140 (previously World Trade Center - 110)

* Tallest skyscraper to highest occupied floor: 507.3 m (1,664.4 ft) (previously Taipei 101 - 439.2 m (1,440.9 ft)

* Tallest skyscraper to top of roof: 507.3 m (1,664.4 ft) (previously Taipei 101 - 439.2 m (1,440.9 ft)

* Vertical concrete pumping (for a building): 507.3 m (1,664.4 ft) (previously Taipei 101 - 439.2 m (1,440.9 ft)

The last WTB announcement we saw was on July 12 from CNN/TIME Mag., (http://time-blog.com/middle_east/2007/07/burj_dubai_worlds_tallest_buil.html) now the 19th.

Have to admit, EMAAR is keeping the height very fluid in the announcements as we are beginning to see in "WTB day". Of course we new this, but now its confirmed very plainly in the write-ups of these press articles.

A call was received, reporting that concrete had just been poured to 510 meters, surpassing it as the world's tallest (albeit yet unofficial, since the tower has to be fully completed in order to count) skyscraper.

Well, ^^^ that pic does tell a story. Yes, Dubai has a ton of supertalls and talls, but it is nowhere near the density of Chicago or NYC. Even if you sort of shoved all of the towers together, Dubai just isn't the Loop or Manhattan. Granted, Dubai is a new kind of beast, a city of the desert, but something it "isn't all there." The layers of history, the variety of materials and technologies present in so many cities from Moscow to Paris to Los Angeles.

It is sort of like a team in baseball. A team that only shoots for the home run, and never the single, the double, the steal, the squeeze play. Just heroics, all Barry Bonds and no "team." I don't know if that made sense, but wanted to say it.

The Burj Dubai is a great tower, in a great city, but it isn't:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6f/Chicago_Downtown_Aerial_View.jpg

^ Nice! I got one too. I had mine made at the mall where they have/do laser sculpture. They would rather do photos because they have a camera there and it just transfers easily. But they also can have renders done with amazing detail. They are better than online services if you want to get one made because of no copyright issues ;). Have to get a light for mine though. It makes it much better as you can see.

Do you have a link to the place you got yours? I can add it to the little BD gift shop we have here.

BTW, thanks for the shots

Wow look much taller now, haven't it pass the CN Tower in Canada yet?

The CN Tower is 553 metres (1814 feet) tall and the Burj Dubai is now at 512 meters (1647 feet). Give it a little while and then it will be taller than the CN Tower. But then it still has to pass the KVLY/KTHI TV Mast in Blanchard, North Dakota, United States which is the tallest man-made structure on land.

Dubai tower is now 'world's tallest'

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Developers of a 1,680-foot (512 meters) skyscraper still under construction in oil-rich Dubai has claimed that it has become the world's tallest building, surpassing Taiwan's Taipei 101 which has dominated the global skyline at 1,667 feet (508 meters) since 2004.

The Burj Dubai is expected to be finished by the end of 2008 and its planned final height has been kept secret. The state-owned development company Emaar Properties, one of the main builders in rapidly developing Dubai, said only that the tower would stop somewhere above 2,275 feet.

When completed, the skyscraper will feature more than 160 floors, 56 elevators, luxury apartments, boutiques, swimming pools, spas, exclusive corporate suites, Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani's first hotel, and a 124th floor observation platform.

After North American and Asian cities marked their 20th century economic booms with skyscrapers, the Gulf grew eager to show off its success with ever taller buildings. In Dubai, long an oil-rich Gulf symbol of rapid economic growth, the building reflects the city's hunger for global prestige.

"It's a symbol of Dubai as a city of the world," said Greg Sang, the project director for Emaar Properties.

Mohammed Ali Alabbar, chairman of Emaar, said it will be an architectural and engineering masterpiece of concrete, steel and glass. Dubai has "resisted the usual and has inspired to build a global icon," he said.

"It's a human achievement without equal."

The $1 billion skyscraper is in the heart of downtown Dubai, a 500-acre development area worth $20 billion. Construction, which began just 1,276 days ago, has been frenzied -- at times, one storey rises every three days.

The tip of the Burj's spire will be seen for 60 miles, developers say. But Sang knows it will not dominate the world's skyline forever.

"It's a fact of life that, at some point, someone else will build a taller building," he said. "There's a lot of talk of other tall buildings, but five years into Burj Dubai's construction, no one's started building them yet," he said.

Previous skyscraper record-holders include New York's Empire State Building at 1,250 feet; Shanghai's Jin Mao Building at 1,381 feet; Chicago's Sears Tower at 1,451 feet; and Malaysia's Petronas Towers at 1,483 feet.

The Burj will let the Middle East reclaim the world's tallest structure. Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza, built around 2500 B.C., held the title with its 481 feet (147 meters) until the Eiffel Tower in Paris was built in 1889 at a height of 985 feet (300 meters), or 1,023 feet (312 meters) including the flag pole.

The company says the Burj will fulfill the Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat's four criteria for the tallest building: the height of the structural top, the highest occupied floor, the roof's top, and the spire's tip, pinnacle, antenna, mast or flag pole.

For now, the unattractive brownish concrete skeleton jutting into Dubai's humid skies lacks any aura of a masterpiece. Rising 141 floors with a mass of surrounding cranes and girders, it has no windows, glass or steel yet.

The architects and engineers are American and the main building contractor is South Korean.

Most of the 4,000 laborers are Indian. They toil around the clock in Dubai's sizzling summer with no set minimum wage. Human rights groups regularly protest against labor abuse in Dubai, but local media rarely report such complaints.
