An out growth of my NWTC model, this will be a complete model of the entire World Trade Center by Yamasaki/Emery Roth/Skidmore Owings and Merrill. The are and most likely will not be textures of any kind in the model. Everything will be articulated in 3D. Every facade detail, even hte internal colums will be shown. I might even make the WTC mall that was under the plaza if I can find plans.

As of right now I've completed the Twin Towers except for the roof and the lobbies, and 5WTC (Morgan Stanely/Credit Suisse) except for some internal elements. The next building will be 4WTC, followed by 6WTC.

Twin Towers

5WTC. The first two renders show the building at various stages of design. The rest show it essenitally complete.
http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/9248/tt5.th.jpg (http://img114.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tt5.jpg) http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/2438/tt6.th.jpg (http://img114.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tt6.jpg) http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/6123/tt12.th.jpg (http://img114.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tt12.jpg) http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/441/tt9.th.jpg (http://img114.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tt9.jpg) http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/8207/tt11.th.jpg (http://img114.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tt11.jpg) http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/1716/tt10.th.jpg (http://img114.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tt10.jpg)

BTW Would anyone happen to have photos of the commodities exchange in 4WTC? All I've found out is that it occupied portions of the top 3 floors of the building and was located there through to the end. It's supposedly featured at the end of Trading Places (IMDB Link (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086465/)), but I don't know if that's the real location, as opposed to a set or a cheaper location, nor do I have a copy of the film (which is dumb, because it's a great movie).

It's the kind of expression one makes when that can't think of anything better. It's a hell of a compliment, thanks.

Wow.. I get this eerie feeling looking at these photos. Excellent work STR, you're truly talented.

I'm more anal than talented. Once all the details are accounted for, everything just springs into reality.

But yeah, it does get eerie when I remember what happened and all the photos I press over are of buildings that don't exist. Even the post 9/11 wreckage photos (which ironically are some of the best/most detailed images of the plaza buildings on the net) don't really click unless I stop to think about them. Otherwise I'm just combing the photos for some obscure feature, barely noticing the damaged parts.

http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/7665/fw1.th.jpg (http://img238.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fw1.jpg) http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/3964/fw2.th.jpg (http://img238.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fw2.jpg) http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/6323/fw3.th.jpg (http://img238.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fw3.jpg) http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/2408/fw4.th.jpg (http://img238.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fw4.jpg) http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/8238/fw5.th.jpg (http://img238.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fw5.jpg) http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/5392/fw6.th.jpg (http://img238.imageshack.us/my.php?image=fw6.jpg)

But back to the renders. The first set is of me building 4 World Trade. I start off with the colums, properly spaced at 30 feet on center, to work out the shape of the building. Next I add the lower floors. Thw windows are one long band stretching the length of the wall. This is done to reduce the number of faces (triangles) in the building to keep things running smooth.

Starting with the 3rd floor, I create the 15 foot overhangs, and continue with the wider floors until I reach the roof. Then I added the arches on the lower section, followed by the window frames. Then comes the main facade, which is broken up into 30 foot sections (6 rows of windows) and copied across the face of the building. Finally I add the rooftop mechanical penthouse and the one foot high paraphet. And it's basically done.

4WTC took half the time 5WTC took, as I could basically copy the parts I made for 6 and add them to 4. The finshed building is shown below. (EDIT: Almost finished. It seems there was some kind of addition made to the building on the wall directly facing 2WTC, I'll have to add it) The last render is from the Windows on the World level, 106 or 107, I'm not sure which as I didn't count. I just followed the building elevation and put floor slabs where it told me to.

6WTC, the last of the plaza office buildings. However, this one has some differences. For one reason or another, Yamasaki chose not to implement the same lace-like exterior facade that he used on 4 and 5. Instead he went for something more sturdy (even though there's more glass) and corporate/government. It's lacking the typical Yamasaki delicate touch and replaces it with something more generic, almost van der Rohe-like. It'd be interesting to know why, as there seems to be a story behind all the buildings. Like the hotel I'm working on now. It was planned to open with the rest of the complex in 1973-74, but because of a spat between the PA and a city official, the bureaucrat held up 3WTC until he was out of office. Only then were plans drawn up, by SOM, for the hotel, which opened in 1981.
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/3707/sw3.th.jpg (http://img20.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sw3.jpg) http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/8170/sw6.th.jpg (http://img20.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sw6.jpg) http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/2889/sw4.th.jpg (http://img20.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sw4.jpg)

That addition to 4WTC I mentioned above. I'm not sure what it's use was, but like the 2nd mechanical pentouse in 5WTC, it was added late in the life of the Center. Mid-late 90's, perhaps an upgrade to the complex's electronic systems, which were straining.
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/4691/sw2.th.jpg (http://img20.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sw2.jpg)

After the Custom's House was done, I decided to fix up the plaza. All the buildings were getting photo-real and the plaza was dragging it all down. Amazing what a few trees and some pink lines can do, eh?
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/1928/sw10.th.jpg (http://img20.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sw10.jpg) http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/4060/sw7.th.jpg (http://img20.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sw7.jpg) http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/3220/sw8.th.jpg (http://img20.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sw8.jpg) http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/8862/sw5.th.jpg (http://img20.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sw5.jpg)

The beginning of 3WTC. This one will be tricky. The facade is very flat and that angled part will be an annoyance.

^It's all we have left, unfortunately. There used to be a bunch of real 360 panos around the web, but almost all have been taken down or the site expired. I'll keep posting new panos as I go on, from different angles and times of day. The quality will improve too as I finish 3WTC, 7WTC, the twin tower roofs and lobbies as well as the plaza.

A larger version of the pano, with twice the resolution and weghing in at almost 4MB. There's an even larger version I rendered earlier, but it's 14MB size makes it unwieldy.
http://skyscrapermodels.us/pics/wtc_m.mov

Some new stills as well:
http://img76.imageshack.us/img76/5258/mh28ig.th.jpg (http://img76.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mh28ig.jpg) http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/7299/mh36tn.th.jpg (http://img149.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mh36tn.jpg) http://img76.imageshack.us/img76/9662/mh43dj.th.jpg (http://img76.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mh43dj.jpg)

3WTC should be done either tomorrow or thursday, I've got to finsh the roof and put in that chunk that's missing in the last render. Then some more plaza work and I'll see what I can get done on 7 over the weekend. The Twin Tower interiors/roofs will be wrapped up sometime next week, and that's about it. Total model should have around 500,000 polygons, with 60,000 in each of the towers, 20,000 in the hotel, 10,000 in each of the plaza low-rises, and 50,000 in the outlying buildings.

http://stevwm.tripod.com/wtctribute.htm

This site has collected most of the WTC panos that were available online. About half of them have since been removed. It was this slow vanishing of this material that compelled me to do this model, as there's no telling how much longer the information (and it takes a lot of photos and diagrams to do something like this right) will be around for anyone to do something like this.

In addition, it's my small part in keeping the memory alive. The WTC was an idea, a noble idea, best expressed by its architect. Summarized, the WTC represented the strive for world peace through world trade. I don't want that idea to die, nor the buildings that symbolized it, as is slowly happening.

Unfortunately for me, this version is too old to be any good (the plaza had been completely redone and several floors had been added to the towers), however the rest of you might find this interesting.

^ Well ok....

My WTC 3D model was perhaps the first detailed realtime 3D model of the WTC on the internet when it was released in 2002. My original model is polygonally less detailed, but it was made 4 years ago and with an emphasis of being shown in realtime 3D: as if you were actually walking around it. For that, you have to skillfully balance detail and speed, hence, minimizing polygon detail without a perceptible loss in detail, a technique that game 3D artists use by optimizing polygon count, skillfully using textures, and using things like LOD controlled detail reduction.

In 2003, I added the buildings around it to give more of a realistic look as if you were at the actual site, but I stopped work on it later because of a combination of a lack of being able to get additional accurate detail about the site, and the complexity of the model was overloading my computer (making my computer slow a lot, and the model being so complex to the point that realtime 3D was not feasible anymore at the time). You could have viewed it in realtime 3D using the Cortona VRML viewer, but the viewer sucked and there was no other available 3D realtime formats that were faster, that didn't cost money, and that allowed you to walk through the place. It was shown at www.wtc3D.com for a long time till I abandoned the project and the website was discontinued.

Here's an overhead render of my model:

When I clicked on this thread, I had a gut feeling this has something to do with STR's models.

Well, you deserve this. Good job man.

Amazing model to you too, DaveofCali.

Ah, DaveofCali... I was just about to email you after looking up www.wtc3d.com on the Internet Archive. I was a fan of yours for that very reason; that you could actually walk through a fairly detailed recreation. Actually, my computer had a hard time handling it back then, but I put up with my computer's frame rates because what I did see was very much worth it.

It's a shame the domain's down, cause I'd love trying it out on my more up-to-date computer. (Got a Radeon X800 Pro for Half Life 2 when it came out in 2004... which is nothing now! :)

Can't someone create a "game" environment, keeping the detail, while still being able to walk through smoothly?

STR
Sep 16, 2006, 3:27 PM
^Not mine. There's an average of 1 million polygons on screen at any one time. Since the Radeon has shitty OpenGL performance (always has), you're disadvanted to my 6800GT flashed to Quadro 4500, which is the only way I can view the model. However, I've learned some new tricks and will look at cuting the poly count significantly while enhancing look at the same time.

Work beings on the WTC concourse. After that, I'll see what I can do with the lower floors.
I have been watching your progress for some time STR and quite frankly it is looking awesome. I have been dabbling with 3D real time game engines but the level of detail you have is brilliant. Where do you get the reference information? I've searched the net for years and have never seen plans of the concourse etc.

I lack any photos of the sky lobbies and lift entrances in foyer. If you could point me in the right direction I would very much appreciate it.

If you are interested my current build (CS_NorthTower) is out public now for Counter Strike Source. http://halflife2.filefront.com/file/CS_Source_NorthTower_Map;71297
I could post some images here, but I won't, this is your tribute and I don't want to be treading on any toes.

Can't wait to see your next renders, all the best

^The WTC NIST reports have the needed plans, but here's the express elevators. Each cab had two doors, one on each end, so that while you enter from outside the core, you exit righinto the center of the building with the local elevators directly across from you.

http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/8017/l6cc2.jpg

Meanwhile, I'm starting over. Adding the concourse to the existing model has proven tricky, so I'm rebuilding the whole thing from scratch to make it jive. The towers are almost done, just have to redo the lowrises and attach them to the concourse. I'll probably keep most of the hotel as is.

Can you be more specific (they have a lot of reports)?

Is there glass (tinted) between the mezzaine height and the roof, between the marble covered beams?

Could you see the lifts traverse up and down?

The space between the columns was mirror-polished stainless steel, as was the doors on the elevators.

And I believe the resport was NISTAR 1.1 or 1.7. I don't recall which, whenever I need the info I just click through them all until I find the one I need.

First, an interesting comparison. Everyone remarks at the similarities between Chicago's Aon Center, and the late Twin Towers. While stylisticly similar, they are quite different. First, each of the New York landmarks were significantly larger than the Chicago one. Second, Aon has standard 5 foor wide windows, The Trade Center of course had its famed 20-inch wide panes.

These will be the last renders of the original Twin Tower models. All subsequent shots will be of the new versions, which will have some elements of the earlier attempt (like the core).

http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/1224/chin040ep2.th.jpg (http://img221.imageshack.us/my.php?image=chin040ep2.jpg) http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/9857/chin041ki4.th.jpg (http://img170.imageshack.us/my.php?image=chin041ki4.jpg)

Here's the new model. I'm still working out the kinks in the material on the outside, but this is basically it. The lobby arches will look markedly superior to the original version, but are not done yet. The interior shots are from the 107th floor observation deck in Tower 2, while the second shot is from the 78th floor skylobby. The reflective part in that shot is the express elevator doors, while in front of them lies the local elevator lobby that served the 77th to roughly the 85th floor.

This one is going to take a while, as it's twice as complicated as the first version, so I've divided it into steps. The Twin Towers are practically done, so I've taken to dividing the podium up into five parts, which will be done in order (roughly)

*6WTC and WFC North Bridge, connecting to the lobby of 1WTC. Will include WTC freight doors.
*5WTC, Vessey street entrances, the shops beneath building 5 and landscaping around the northern half of the uperblock, including in front of 1WTC.
*4WTC, Liberty Street entrances, shops beneath building 4 and landscaping on the southern half of the site, including around 2WTC.
*3WTC and its lobby and conference spaces, if I can find photos.
*7WTC if I can find interior photos.

STR! This is fabulous! I've been working on a WTC model of my own in 3dsmax. I also used the NIST reports, and the large mall-floor plan you provided some time ago helped me align the buildings correctly. I started making the structural frame of the north tower (including the hat-truss which was a bitch), then I figured I make the hotel, and now I'm soon done with 6 and 5 aswell. The south tower is still just a representative box, 1362 feet high, and the north tower is still just structural steel, complete with core, elevator shafts, stairwells, hattruss and foundations. I'll post pics if someone are interested.

PS! One thing that bothers me about the lowrise buildings is the varying hights of the streetlevels around the complex. Between 4 and 5 it's lower than plaza level, but not as low as in front of WTC 2 and south of WTC 4. Do you have any good reference pics or plans?

Yeah, I've got more mall shots. Basically, When I do a building, I complete the stuff beneath it. So most of the NE mall was completed along with 5WTC. Now I'm working on 4WTC and the structure beneath. It'll probably be a couple of weeks before the mall and the low rise offices are done, but they're next. Then I'm sprucing up the Twin Towers, mostly lobby and roof detail. After that is Tower 7, though I need photos of that building's lobby. Then it's adding greenery to the plaza and streetscape. I haven't decided what I'm gonig to do with 3WTC, the one I made for the first WTC model is detailed and complicated enough.
