Shocking, a 2 Billion hotel planned, well someday. Maybe they are thinking ahead.

http://www.lvrj.com/business/miami-company-envisions--2-billion-project-100103334.html

"We have an extremely positive outlook on this market and are confident in the long-term future of Las Vegas"

As with Fontainebleau I dont think developers like this one and Icahn are idiots, otherwise they would not be doing what they are doing in Vegas. They just have lots of patience it may be a while.

Right behind Wynn I guess.

I knew this was going to happen though. When the prices for properties go down, or they go into bankruptcy, a lot of outside groups will come in and start buying up properties. It's a good thing, because that means Vegas will recover and people know it.

Despite the mess The Cosmopolitan has been involved in the past several years it seems like the final project has a good sense of identity behind it. It's definitely aiming for a young, hip vibe but it seems to have depth behind the decor, restaurant choices, and even options like the Art-o-Mat that help build the brand experience for the hotel.

Getting excited for this to open.

looks pretty good, pretty bold. it'll look better with the shops insides are done and lit up as well as rooftop pool area. there may still be some leds screens on that white roof area also, we'll have to wait and see but cosmo is already making itself noticeable as it should.

Seva

NICE. Hopefully the letters will be turned on before the cosmo even opens so we can see. It's white though so it's probably wont be a yellow beacon like westgate. And there are signs on all 4 sides of the tower. I assume on the east/west side where it's smaller they'll just put the cosmo's giant "C" Logo.

It's also amazing how the new led sign up front gives a voice and life to the cosmo and it hasn't even opened yet. Never saw this with citycenter. I think it will do well in time. I would even say the compact design could be revolutionary for a resort. People do not like walking all day. The balconies overlooking the fountains and citycenter, rooftop pool up by strip front designed way before Encore put in theirs. Like Wynn said the traffic may be an issue but it will be overlooked by all the other positives Cosmo has.

The Cosmo is looking more and more amazing!!! I remember four years ago when there was absolutely nothing there except a huge hole in the ground and some cores sticking out of the ground. Construction seemed to be painfully slow at periods and has seen some very dark times in the process, but the important thing is that it will finally get done and be at least as amazing if not more than we have all been anticipating!!! One thing that's for sure is that so far all I can saw is awwwwwwww...

well looks like that answers the question of how powerful cosmo's lighting is, though I hope the rest of the tower is also lit up, that would help lessen the blue stripes a bit. Still its looks a bit too white, not the bluish-green in the early renders which I liked. Also looks like not all the stripes in this tower are lit up unless they are only lighting the bottom half of the tower.

Oh and forget the rest of the letters they should just put the O and call it The Cosmo. Easier to say.

i saw lighting tests going on over the weekend on that cosmo blue strips. loos like there may be a light show - they were moving, turning on and off, in a pattern. maybe there will be a little movement with those blue lights.

also - the front cosmo entry LED signage riht above the main pedestrian entry has a neat bent LED screen with 'The cosmopolitan' above of it BUT below the screen it says 'bridge to city center'......kinda dumb to have that as your tagline - even considering the stairs for the bridge is 50 feet to the left.

reminds me of monte carlos new website...."monte carlo....gateway to city center."

yes dynamic lighting is the way to go.

for all cosmo tries to stand out from city center it will also use many people's assumptions that think Cosmo is a part of citycenter to get them inside,

ok so i saw cosmo again and the entrance from the skybridge has an led screen too and it says get this... "escalator to Bellagio"

I guess cosmo wants people to go through it knowing they can also reach resorts on the other side but come on, Cosmo is not some alleyway to reach citycenter or bellagio it's a full fledged $4B resort its kinda demeaning in a way.

I hope citycenter puts up a sign on Harmon saying bridge to Cosmo here.

Although i guess if people go into Cosmo and then find that they dont want to leave that's another story.

They punctured the layer of Caliche beneath the hotel as I understand it. Below that is a huge sediment sponge full of water. If the Caliche layer is punctured, water pours in, especially in areas closer to the center of the valley.

I swung by the Tropicana this weekend to see some of the updates. The renovations really have a nice feel.
I also saw they had made a preview center for a new attraction called the Mob Experience, it’s suppose to open in December. They are spending about 11 million on the attraction, and it’s going to cover about 25,000 square feet. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s worth looking into.

This is not connected to the mob museum downtown.
This looks very cool.

I criticized the Cosmo's main LED sign top lettering being hard to read and being a bit small that they seemed to have taken it down, the C and all the letters leaving only the screen. Im sure they will get it right the 2nd time. Perhaps have the letters have a solid background panel so it can be read easier.

Is that the condo part of the tower? Usually hotel rooms in Vegas don't have balconies. The version in the LVT renderings didn't show that detail.

most resorts don't have balconies on al there rooms, just the suites such as the ones at mgm grand and at bellagio.

Looks very promising indeed. It will be interesting to see if this actually happens. I am wondering if Drai is just entering into a partnership with Harrah's, or if he is buying Barbary Bill's outright (which I doubt Harrah's would want to lose anything in their stretch of real estate).

If this does happen and makes money, I would hope that Harrah's would seriously invest some capital into all the properties from Harrah's to Bally's (and internally link PH with Paris if they are serious about keeping these properties in their portfolio).

With them turning Barbary Bill's into a party pit, it appears that the Harrah's Masterplan for this block is pretty much dead, which means hopefully they'll start investing serious capital into some of these properties. Maybe they'll seek outside partnerships or different hotel management companies to run some of the hotels if Drai's boutique nightlife hotel thing works out.

Without the masterplan, here's what Harrah's could do:
They could knock down most of Harrah's and Imperial Palace, maybe keeping a few of the hotel towers here and there and combining the two properties into a 500-1000 room boutique property with a 60,000-90,000 strip fronting casino (think of a more modern looking version of Encore). Rebrand it something else. They could keep the Asian theme of IP and give the property a really modern take of Asian design.

Completely gut out and redesign the Flamingo, reconfiguring all the public spaces and casino, basically rebuilding the strip frontage while also opening up the casino into the existing pool/garden areas. A new main porte cochere would be added to the north in the space currently. Reskin the towers, while completely gutting all the rooms and suites.

With Bally's and Paris connected, they could either completely retheme Bally's into the Paris theme, making Bally's just a new extention of Paris, or give Bally's a completely new theme. In both cases, it would be smart to bring the casino right to the street and removing all that dead space that was once the MGM Grand parking lot.

I guess I can dream. It's not 2005 anymore, and will never be again. Doubt they'll do a thing.

Do many of you feel that The Cosmopolitan is going to be successful. I think it is. There is something about the Cosmo is that is really different than anything the strip has right now. I mean seriously their buffet is called The Wicked Spoon for goodness sake and they have a restaurant called CHINAPOBLANO that has chinese and mexican dishes.

Cosmo would do well to make sure its brand is marketed well. Thinking outside the box would definitely be the best thing they can do. Why in a recession should people go to Vegas and the Cosmo?

The Mariott thing, perhaps taking some customers from nearby resorts, competitive room rates, using twitter and other novel ways to get the world out like they've been doing, and treating guests right and giving value for the money is the way to go. Having celebrity chefs and luxury rooms alone will not cut it. I reckon they still have some game changing stuff they are planning that havnt been disclosed yet, it would certainly be a help.

Aria's positives and negatives have been seen it would be good for Cosmo to use that knowledge once they open. Cosmo for example has the hi tech room control systems like Aria that will be improved upon.

As expected Cosmo has replaced their main LED sign lettering with a new one that has a black background, much easier to see.

It simply says The Cosmopolitan though and has no more "C" Logo. I liked the C Logo.

New Name for Hard Rock Hotel?
What's in a name? For the Hard Rock Hotel in Vegas, it could be a lot.

The Hard Rock restaurant chain has filed a lawsuit against the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel that essentially says they want their name back. The hotel, which is operated by the Morgans Hotel Group, licenses use of the name and is not actually run by the same company that does the omnipresent restaurants.

The heart of the lawsuit is the restaurant chain's assertion that the hotel is damaging their good name (go ahead - make your own jokes) with its over-the-top, almost anything goes style partying at their nightclubs and weekly pool parties called Rehab. The straw that reportedly broke the guitar string was a new reality show on TruTV about Rehab that, according the lawsuit, "revels in drunken debauchery."

If the restaurant chain wins, the hotel would have to change its name and its entire look and feel, which is completely wrapped up in the rock and roll aesthetic. The lawsuit calls for not only monetary damages but for them to get rid of everything even remotely related to the Hard Rock brand.

Morgans has some options if it comes to that. They were trying to bring their upscale Mondrian and Delano brands to Las Vegas as a part of the now mothballed Echelon project on The Strip, so it's possible that they could change the Hard Rock into one of those. Doing so would certainly not be cheap, but the bigger question is whether the hotel could hold onto its youth appeal without the Hard Rock name hanging off the front of it.

Stay tuned.

I don't think they will prevail in this. The place was established as gambling venue with a rock and roll theme. How could hard partying around a pool be considered a worse image? Yes some folks behave badly but much of the rehab reality show deals with the bad behavior not being tolerated and dealt with by the staff.

They bought the place and the value of the use of the Hard Rock name was included in the price.

I think the only way the Hard Rock Cafe International will be able to get the Hard Rock Vegas Casino to give up the name would be for them to pay them to give it up. Maybe this is an attempt to be able to buy back the name for cheaper than they would have to pay otherwise though.

I hope nothing too serious happens to Bill's. While obviously a dated vestige of Vegas Past, it still has a homey, small-town feel, great CHEAP hotel rooms, and the best damn location on The Strip! I hope any renovations keep at least some of the atmosphere intact, and perhaps don't jack up the room rates too much...
