Construction Update

Week of October 5, 2009

·Indoor landscaping is being installed along the 400-foot curtain wall of the ARIA Convention Center.

·The Cirque du Soleil cast and crew continue rehearsals in the theatre at ARIA.

·Workers completed installation of 300 glass globes that illuminate Twist by Pierre Gagnaire, the signature restaurant at Mandarin Oriental. Located on the 23rd floor, the globes can already be seen from Las Vegas Boulevard.

·The kitchen in the ARIA Employee Dining Room is now in operation and began serving meals to employees working on-site.

·Artist Maya Lin’s work, Silver River, will be installed above the Registration Desk at ARIA. The 84-foot silver cast of the Colorado River was created from reclaimed silver in the spirit of CityCenter’s commitment to sustainability.

·Mandarin Oriental has completed hiring; colleagues hired represent more than 30 countries.

·Furniture load-in for back-of-house areas at Vdara is complete. Furniture load-in now begins for podium-level public spaces.

·Furniture load-in in the Vdara rooms is up to the 53rd and 54th floors.

·ARIA Tower furniture is being installed up to the 53rd floor.

·Furniture load-in at the Mandarin Tower has reached floors 12 and 14.

·Interior finishes are being completed in public spaces at ARIA, Vdara and Mandarin Oriental.

Wow everything looks like its coming down to the wire. I can only guess how many things need to be crunched into these two months.

I think it'll be talked about a lot by the first crowd of visitors who enjoy it this holiday. From architecture to art to retail to the casino there will be something about it that will peak a facet of interest and be relayed to others.

No one knows what to expect because it looks so industrial, but all the interiors should be more amazing (and warmer) than people predict.

It looks like a monolith at day time, but I think it will end up looking a lot better at night.

In about three months that entire section of the strip will look a lot nicer.

Hi there everybody,

My name is James I just moved to LV yesterday, I've been a llllllllooooooooonnnnnnngggggggg time reader of your posts for the last few years but I never had a dedicated computer line to join in. In fact it was you guys that gave me the info to weight the pros and cons and to choose where to buy a place in the city and although I'm not exactly happy with my finances being stuck all in CityCenter (dumb move on my part but I only learn my lessons the hard way in life), I am very appreciative to you all for being such a wide range of voices full of knowledge about the topic of skyscrapers and the facets of this city. I may seem a bit off-balanced at times so please do forgive me...I guess that's why I'm moving to Vegas in the first place haha it's where all the freaks go!!

So to thank you all, I went out from the hotel today to grab some pictures and I hope to do lots more in the future from rare places and angles as I learn more about my new hometown.

Here is a comparison of my last trip to vegas and my current one. Personally I prefer the first picture...and I just can't seem to figure out why hmmmm.

These trees hopefully will mean that CC will not just use the 'usual' palm trees of the rest of the strip. Those are mid-west trees and everybody loves the mid-west/mountains!!

This is on the new Harmon Ave facing due East:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2453/4002403309_122a3cc2dd_b.jpg

Cosmo is looking awesome (wish I bought in there instead of PCC due to several unique reasons) and I wonder what the pool will actually look like since everything else has changed on the project. Also I do see the irony in fact of the street directly across from a 11B project is one of the dirtiest in the city right now because elsewhere at least workers do clean up all the cards only to have them thrown again--(somebody will have to explain to me how the financial calculations work on that grand of a scale.)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3519/4002401211_68f5f456d3_b.jpg

I've studied the models of the final product, and now I've walked up and down the streets...but I still don't see how the hell this Harmon crossing is going to make traffic go faster. I know that the extra lanes will be great but overall I think the amount of extra traffic coming thru here will make this a permanent traffic jam spot as if the strip wasn't already enough of a gridlock. More lights always equals more confusion and I've travelled around the world and never seen so many street lights within 100m of each other.

There's no question in my mind that this area of The Strip will be gridlocked more or less 24/7/365. Thankfully though, once Harmon is finished with its rebuilding, it will be much, MUCH easier to access Planet Hollywood's garage and valet! :) And thankfully the pedestrian experience will improve greatly very soon as well, for it's a nightmare along the strip for these couple of blocks right now!

Well, at least there's still fireworks.

In another economy, CityCenter might have opened with the kind of pageantry befitting royalty.

Instead, the $8.5 billion resort complex — billed as a redefinition of the resort experience for future generations of tourists — will open in December in a manner more appropriate for troubled times.

Managing partner MGM Mirage isn’t revealing its opening strategy for CityCenter, but it’s clear that the plan, finalized after much debate, will be a toned-down version of what could have been.

“We struggled to find the right tone,” MGM Mirage spokesman Alan Feldman said. “To do something grandiose doesn’t feel right with the economy.”

How to be extravagant without seeming wasteful?

One scenario the company rejected was put forth by a company that helped create the opening ceremony for the Beijing Olympics, for example. Not that the festivities will be solemn. There will be fireworks, thousands of invited guests, hors d’oeuvres and champagne. But the real money, Feldman said, will go into marketing rather than an over-the-top party.

That video is sad, the tallest building in the city, the state, the tallest built west of the Mississippi in the last decade, empty and just abandoned like that, wow.

here is an article I just found googling, from a few days ago, it is even sadder:

By ALEXANDRA BERZON

LAS VEGAS—The Fontainebleau the luxury hotel and casino development at the northern end of the Las Vegas Strip, sits more than half-finished after falling into bankruptcy in June.

But as potential suitors consider rescuing the project, they are facing a grim reality: It may not be worth the money it would cost to complete it. More than $2 billion has already been poured into construction.

"It is going to take $1.2 billion to $2 billion to finish Fontainebleau, and it's not worth that much," Penn National Gaming Chief Operating Officer Tim Wilmott said. Penn is currently negotiating to take it over from the project's creditors. The project's developer says other parties have shown interest in the project as well.

Penn, based in Wyomissing, Pa., operates 12 casinos in states around the country and Canada but none in Las Vegas.

I love the old Circus Circus clown! It so reminds me of the "old" Vegas, it would be a shame if it were ever to come down...

That being said, I do feel sorry for that poor hotel, with so many failed projects adjacent to it. Even though the Stardust and Frontier were kind of crappy, at least they gave visitors a REASON to walk to Circus Circus, as it is now, there's no way anyone would walk over there from the rest of The Strip...

In a dream senario, Boyd would sell off the Echelon parcel and use the cash to buy Cosmo and name it Stardust or Borgata.

I was able to take a construction tour today with a buyer at CityCenter and have to say it is UNBELIEVABLE in person. Here are some new pics and notes about each stop.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2485/4021511100_9d0a83128f_o.jpg

Harmon Circle is jaw-dropping. The scale simply can't be described when standing on the road watching various ramps, underpasses and overpasses intersect in a futuristic loop.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2541/4021511148_3d6ced5b11_o.jpg

The Harmon Circle signage reminded me of an airport. THe 360 degree view of Aria and Vdara practically transports you into a city within a city.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3489/4020750175_90ae1a627e_o.jpg

The scale of the Vdara is MUCH larger in person. This building is huge. It's simply a building that could be placed in any city district and be considered an international icon. The porte cochere is massive as it houses the pool deck above. Touches of gold could be seen inside the restaurant Silk Road and the lobby.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3525/4020750307_75d69c6392_o.jpg

The CityCenter Tram looks great buzzing about the city. There were two lines, each running back and forth to each of the three stops within CityCenter.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3533/4020750355_54828d8742_o.jpg

The main road entrance to CityCenter is called CityCenter Place. Again, the scale is huge, with Mandarin Oriental to the left, Veer Towers to the right, and Aria straight ahead. There are two to three stories of underground throughout the complex to shuttle valet cars and house other operations.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2577/4021511020_1f7e491a23_o.jpg

The water feature in front of Aria is said to be include a wave-like functionality and LED lights that project onto the water. The large horizontal concrete wall is a Water Wall that will stream behind the main water feature.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2553/4020750701_21840c5f1a_o.jpg

Here you can see the Mandarin Oriental Banzai Tree Garden and the Typewriter Eraser Scale X.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2551/4020750439_f6b249bbbe_o.jpg

Each Veer tower lobby is about 60 to 70ft tall. The finished glass covering looks great on both towers.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2793/4020750407_57e8fda32a_b.jpg

Looking from the ground up, you can really get a sense of the 4.63 degree compound lean of each Veer tower.

To recap, much grander, much more impressive than I could have ever imagined. This will definitely be a must-see attraction in Vegas.

· Installation of landscaping and exterior artwork is being completed at Mandarin.

· Artist Maya Lin’s sculpture is in place above the ARIA front desk.

· Interior finishings continue in Silk Road Restaurant at Vdara.

· Installation of the framework of artist Jenny Holzer’s work has begun at ARIA. When complete, the piece will span more than 280 feet across the lower level of the ARIA North Valet on the ground level of Harmon Circle.

· Carpet installation is complete in The Oriental Ballroom at Mandarin. The Oriental Ballroom will be the only meeting space on The Strip featuring floor-to-ceiling windows with views of Las Vegas Blvd.

· Five members of the US House of Representatives toured the CityCenter site with Senior Vice President of Public Affairs Alan Feldman. Among the delegation were House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Congressmen Steve Israel from New York and Richard Neal from Massachusetts, and Nevada Congresswoman Dina Titus. Nevada Congresswoman Shelley Berkely joined the group at the CityCenter Sales Pavilion where they met with Chairman Jim Murren to discuss the important role the project will play in the economy.

Most of these changes can be seen from the roads in and around CityCenter, but are still worth a mention all the same.

I remember seeing a part of it in this photo (http://www.dcc.at/client/dcc/media/600x/Media_648551702.jpg)

The walkway that connects Vdara and Bellagio doesn't appear to be enclosed, Justdefended did you get to view that area?

The bus rode through that area and I was only able to get a shot of the Fire Station through the van window, I couldn't see if the walkway was enclosed, though in the picture it seems the Tram Station is covering most of it.

The whole back area was pretty clean as were most of the other construction areas. It seems like all the major work exterior work is done.

At Vdara you could see workers etching detail on a wall and working on interior finishes.

At CityCenter Place the road was basically clear aside from workers walking about. It seemed like they could see our enthusiasm and didn't mind us admiring all their work. :)

Can't wait to see the interior of Vdara. I've seen photos of the art that is on display in the concierge lobby and looks like it will be very impressive.

Great pics of Crystals solarquestion. Looks massive inside.

The art in Vdara looks great. They really are taking that property to a new level. I doubt any condo hotels will ever reach this peak. I heard from a CityCenter rep that Vdara is a $1.8 billion building - WOW.

Didn't know Vdara cost that much... They really should just make it all hotel. I wanted to stay there, but the room I wanted wasn't available, I'm guessing it won't be available until after the closings.

P.S. THANKS EVERYONE FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TODAY..

Very cool.

Here is a description from a press release:

A central element of this design is the three-story sculptural tree house that reaches 70 feet from the ground level to frame an oculus in the roof. Visible throughout Crystals, the tree house will serve as a meeting point for guests and unfold on the second level to surround the terrace seating at Mastro's Ocean Club.

Awsome photos!

The crown on the Harmon looked done today. It's all one shade of blue. I thought they would just continue the pixelayed sky facade to the top. Unfirtunatly the 'hat' now just shortens the buildins more.

These photos are all making the opening very anticipating. I can't wait, cosmo tho now looks dirty as is is all black, er dark grey. And the deconstructivism glass facade now looks ugly compared to city center

A view from Harmon Circle facing North. It looks like the future!

I agree ScottG, the Cosmo pales in comparison. It's strange being in such awe at each facet of CityCenter and then looking over at Cosmo and feeling nothing. It's a pretty conventional building, but hopefully Deutsche Bank pulls it off in the end. And, it's much better than having only the Jockey Club there.

My idea about cosmo: clad it in an aluminum color. That would look a lot better during the day.

I wouldn't be surprised if Cosmo gets sold to MGM and made a part of City Center.

solarquestion
Oct 20, 2009, 6:17 AM
But the construction of the Cosmopolitan did not include the standards and practices needed to make it LEED certified, so I think that works against that scenario. Also, I doubt MGM would want to have anything to with Cosmo, short of a management contract. I don't think they'd feel comfortable right now owning it as an asset. PLUS, if we're just talking aesthetics, it does not fit with CityCenter at all.

Just my two cents.

I don't understand the red fin design concept, particularly if it's not just the outside curtain but actually casts a deep red light everywhere inside.

A Whole Foods inside Crystals?? Man it's gonna be hard to stop eating at that place.

Don't get me wrong o think cosmo is in the best location. And I thing it looks great at night. I dig the varying horizontal blue neon but during the day the thing is too dark and looks dirty. The front entrance looks broken, buT it could just be the lack of interior, activity, and lighting, I would definity choose to stay, and live in cosmo over city center tho, the thing has the best views, arguably, in the world on every side!

Diversify like mad. Throw it at UNLV and let the brookings institution (those guys that developed the Marshal plan for rebuilding Germany after ww2) help develop more technology oriented jobs instead of tourism oriented jobs. I would also subsidize the nearly 2 gigawatts of solar power planned around the valley. That would bring in a lot of new green jobs.

You only want to throw money towards things in which Las Vegas has an inherent advantage. So Krases's idea of helping fund solar research makes sense, but general funding of technology does not. And funding elderly-oriented health care research (such as the Lou Ruvo brain institute) makes sense because older people are more likely to want to be in a warm client.
If I had $10B, I'd consider buying the Fontainebleau shell and converting it to a hospital/medical office complex and see if groups like the Cleveland clinic (who have expressed interest in expanding to Las Vegas) would join on to magage operations.

I think the Maglev would have a stop at Ivanpah along the way. Although all of that ten billion probably wouldn't even complete just the Maglev.

I think extending the monorail to McCarren would be the best that could be accomplished. Maybe even extending it to downtown would be possible.
