The city takes its name from the railway station, which honored Lieutenant Colonel Severo Ezpeleta.
Ezpeleta is also the Basque form of Espelette, a French commune of the same name, although they are not related to each other.

It is home to the Quilmes municipal cemetery and has an aero club.
