Jurmala is an independent city and resort town just 26 km west of the nation's capital of Riga. It's situated on a thin peninsula sandwiched between Riga Bay to its north, and the Lielupe River to its south and east.
Jurmala is the largest of the beach resort towns in the Baltic states, and under Soviet Rule was a population resort destination for high-ranking Communist Party officials.
