Ishigaki

The amalgamation in 1908 of the historic Okinawan districts of Ishigaki, Yaeyama, and Miyara resulted in Yaeyama Village, which became Ishigaki Village in 1914, Ishigaki Town in 1926, and finally Ishigaki City in 1947. It is the southernmost city in Japan, closer to Taiwan than the main island of Okinawa, and a popular tourist destination, as it is the gateway to the Yaeyama Islands, such as Iriomote Island, Taketomi Island, Hateruma Island and Yonaguni Island.
