Wilkes-Barre is the central city of the Wyoming Valley in northeastern Pennsylvania. The city was named after two British colonial politicians and is nicknamed "The Diamond City," due to the shape of its Public Square and the abundance of coal.
Wilkes-Barre was made the seat of Luzerne County in 1786 and was incorporated in 1871. The city gained prominence in the 19th and 20th centuries as an active coal mining city, but has struggled economically since the 1960s.
Wilkes-Barre, along with Scranton, are the central cities of its respective region. The population of the metropolitan area is over 625,000.
