Hackensack

Hackensack is located in northeastern New Jersey about six miles west of Manhattan. The seat of Bergen County, it is a center of government, business, finance, and retail services. It is also home to many industries. Hackensack was settled by the Dutch in 1639. The name is derived from the Leni Lenape language and means \"confluence of waters\" (refering to the juncture of Overpeck Creek in the Hackensack River). Dutch influence is still felt in the area. In 1776, George Washington made Hackensack his headquarters after the retreat from New York City. The current area of the community was established in 1872, with incorporation as a city coming in 1921. The skyline consists mostly of apartment towers.
