• Although the church was already completed in the 16th century, its 40 meters tall spire was added in 1872 after the old 22 meters tall one was struck by lightning.
• In 1584, William the Silent was entombed here in a mausoleum designed by Hendrick and Pieter de Keyser. Since then members of the House of Orange-Nassau have been entombed in the royal crypt. The latest are Queen Juliana (Queen of the Netherlands from 1948-1980) and her husband Prince Bernhard in 2004. The royal crypt is not open to the public.
• The Nieuwe Kerk has the second tallest church tower in the netherlands. Only the Dom Tower in Utrecht is taller.
