This project,which started in 2007 in Tianjin by Hong Kong's Shu, plans to build a complex of the country's tallest building, luxury homes and a polo field. On September 10, 2008, the building officially started construction, and after several years of construction, including the construction of the underground section and the main tower, the building structure was completed on September 8, 2015. With 130 floors (117th floor main floor+13th floor equipment or technical floor) and a height of 597 meters, it became the second tallest building in the world after Burj Khalifa and set many Chinese and world records, such as the world's tallest reinforced concrete structure and the world's tallest observation hall.
However, shortly after the topping-out, the project was suspended due to issues such as the developer's funding chain being broken. Despite some attempts to resume work, progress has been slow and the building has not been completed.
The total construction area of the entire project is about 370,000 square meters, and the design integrates Chinese and Western cultures. The top design is diamond-shaped, symbolizing the brilliant pearl of Tianjin. It was originally planned to be a super highrise skyscraper integrating Grade A offices, hotels, tourism, and boutique businesses, but the current situation still needs further observation.
In 2024, the project will begin preparations for resuming work. In April 30, 2025, the project will officially resume work. It is expected to be completed on April 30, 2027.
The restart of Tianjin 117 Building is led by an investment consortium, with core participants including multiple central enterprises and financial institutions such as CITIC Group, China Construction Group, and China Cinda. Behind the scenes, the newly established Tianjin Tianxin Huachuang Group Co., Ltd. serves as the project operator to promote the resumption of work.
