Description - Architect: Eric Bedford
- The tower was commisioned by the GPO (General Post Office) to carry microwave signals and transport telecommunications traffic around London and the UK, which is why it was known at a time as the Post Office Tower and GPO Tower.
- Construction began in June 1961, and it topped out on 15 July 1964. The tower became operational on October 8th 1965, and finally opened to the public on16 May 1966.
- The tower was the United Kingdom's tallest building from 1964-1980, when it was overtaken by the NatWest Tower, since having been renamed Tower 42.
- In 1970 there was an IRA attack in the observation area.
- The tower had a revolving restauraunt on the 34th floor known as 'The Top of The Tower,' but it closed in 1981 due to the expiration of its lease.
- The buildings two lifts can reach the top in 30 seconds.
