- Originally named the Victoria Terminus, the station was renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in 1996 as part of a policy to rename places with native names. Chhatrapati Shivaji was a 17th century Maratha king.
- The station was the site of a terrorist massacre on November 2006, 2008.
