Description - Architect: John R. Niernsee
- Construction began in 1855, but was halted in 1865 when General Sherman of the northern forces burned Columbia. It was restarted in 1867, and continued on rrregularly up until 1900.
- The Confederate flag was removed from the flag pole of the dome on July 1st, 2000. It was moved to Civil War memorial on the capitol's grounds.
- The state house was renovated between 1995 and 1998 at a cost of $51,530,000.
