Description Architect: Frank P. Milburn
Renovated in 1925 and 1959
This was the project that launched Milburn's career. He moved to Winston-Salem to supervise the project, which was his largest commission.
The building was never fully demolished. All of the main floors from the 1896 building are still standing today. Only the bell tower and turrets were removed in 1925, when the building was enlarged. It was expanded again in 1959 to completely fill the block. The interior still has original details from 1896, including the original staircase and the original 1896 cornerstone on an original wall inside one of the building's lower floors. This explains why the building still has an 1896 completion date in city records.
