Formerly the Nan Tien Hotel or Great Southern Hotel ,it was one of the tallest buildings in Singapore then.

In the 1980s ,it became very dilapidated and in a sad state.

In early 1990s ,it underwent extensive renonvations ,and was structurally stabilised and strengthened the then weak building.

A new three storey annex building was built at the rear ,linked by a 4 storey atrium. It subsequently re-opened as the Yue Hwa Building ,now occupied by the Yue Hwa Emporium ,in 1996.

It also has perhaps the oldest lift in Singapore.
