It is the oldest regional shopping center in Iowa.

It is named after Merle Hay, the first Iowan to be killed in World War 1.

It is the site of the deadliest fire in Des Moines' history. It occurred on November 5, 1978 at the Yonkers store. The fire killed 10 people, and caused $20 million dollars worth of damage. The store opened about a year later.
